Fujicolor Gold, a Warm Film Like Style

Film simulation recipe with a hybrid Kodak Gold – Fuji Gold look

    Fujicolor Gold Film Recipe

    Fujicolor Gold

A little warmth can add to the mood of a photo, bringing out a cosy feel and making magic hour shots even more magical. That’s the spirit of this warm toned film recipe, that shoots a Fuicolor look in the spirit of Kodak Gold film.

The Fujicolor Gold recipe brings together the Classic Negative base, that suits a Fujicolor film look so well, with the warmth and soft tone of a Kodak Gold look for X-Trans IV cameras.

The warmth isn’t overpowering, and in part this is kept in check by my intention for this recipe to be shot one or two stops overexposed, +1/3 or +2/3.

With all of this coming together, the soft tones and mid amount of warmth, means that this recipe can be used anytime. It will deliver for you in a wide range of conditions.

However, the golden hour is when this recipe really comes to life, so do try it when the sun is low in the sky, either in the mornings or evenings, to enjoy the ‘gold’ of Fujicolor Gold as it was intended.

Ultra Color 200, Max Color Negative Film

Classic Negative film simulation recipe with boosted colour saturation

    Ultra Color 200 Film Recipe

    Ultra Color 200

Here’s a Fujifilm simulation recipe that I made for cloudy and dull days, with punchy colour and deep blacks. It works in all sorts of conditions, but with a Classic Negative base and +4 colour, it’s especially great on gloomy days where the punchy colour and dark shadows deliver powerful pictures from the unremarkable light.

Whilst this film recipe brings some vivid colurs to life, it’s not an unatural look, such as you could get from Vlevia with a similar setting. Instead, this look preserves the nostalgic character of Classic Negative, and provides a style that is still very definitely Fujifilm.

I’ve also increased shadow depth in this recipe, meaning that images made with Ultra Color 200 have more impact that standard Classic Negative. This is balanced out with a stop or two of over-exposure so the resulting image isn’t too dark. I find it is a great choice for natural subjects like leaves and textures that you might discover on a dull day.

I tried it on a few evening city shots too, and the results were impactful and rich, reminding me a lot of photo prints from max style 35mm films. A few golden hour tests brought out vivid colours, especially in plants, such as the golden ferns further down in the image samples below.

Heart of Gold, for Glorious Golden Hours

Classic Negative film recipe with golden orange tones in the golden hour

    Heart of Gold Film Recipe

    Heart of Gold

Here’s a film recipe that loves the golden hour so much, that it brings the glorious golden tones to any time of day. The base film simulation is Classic Negative, and much like the Xylochrome film recipe, this one was created as an experiment that uses a sliding scale of settings, starting from a 6540K colour balance.

Depending on the conditions, this recipes brings a subtle peach tone to neutrals, or a vivid tangerine hue, which shows most often at sunset. Which you get isn’t quite as unexpected as the infinite improbablility drive, so you can relax and enjoy a relaxing warmth to any image set taken with this recipe.

  • Quartz 400, Pocket Camera Instant Film

Quartz 400, Pocket Camera Instant Film

An instant film recipe with an expired look, for X-Trans IV cameras

    Quartz 400 Film Recipe

    Quartz 400

Here’s an interesting film recipe for exploring the instant film aesthetic that just goes to show what’s possible with film simulations in our Fujifilm cameras. This recipe brings together a quartz pink tinted analog look with the imperfections of low-cost instant photography. It reminds me of Instamatic or Polaroid films, or pocket cameras of decades past when prints were developed by a budget lab.

The recipe is based on Classic Negative, manipulated with colour balance shifts and minimal saturation. I love the look this produces especially when used in bright light, and shooting towards the light for a heavy blast of lens flare. I’d imagine it would be a fun recipe to sty for a stylised fashion shoot, or a 70s theme party, or whenever you want to try an expired instant film look.

  • Dawnstar, for a Golden Sunrise Mood

Dawnstar, for a Golden Sunrise Mood

Classic Negative film simulation recipe with rich colour in golden hour

    Dawnstar Film Recipe

    Dawnstar

Here’s a warm and cosy film simulation recipe to bring extra colour to golden hour. Sunrises and sunsets are made more orange, and golden hour is extended with warm rich tone that especially likes any cream, red or brown in an image.

As for the name, ‘Dawnstar’ is a location in the game Skyrim, and although the Jorrvaskr film recipe was directly inspired by the graphic style of the game, this one takes just the name.

I wanted to take the idea of a recipe for this time of day, and maximise the effects possible from our Fujifilm X-Series cameras. The base simulation is Classic Negative, so on older cameras you can try with Provia or use Velvia with colour at +1 rather than +4.

    Catch 22 Film Recipe

    Catch 22

Sometimes, I have a burst of creativity and make a recipe from scratch in next to no time. But sometimes, like on this occasion, it takes me a long while until I am happy, and ready to share the results.

I created the Catch 22 film recipe with Classic Negative, back in the Summer of 2022, and tested it on a trip to Wimbledon to watch the tennis. Whilst the results were interesting, I was struggling to get the cool tones deepness vibe I was seeking.

Skip forward 6 months and winter weather is here. This, it turns out, is just the weather that Catch 22 is perfect for. Take a winter scene, or the low pale sunshine of the colder months, and this recipe comes to life.

So, here we finally have it … Catch 22.

  • Age of Aquarius, Let the Sunshine In

Age of Aquarius, Let the Sunshine In

Classic Negative film simulation recipe for a mellow and uniquely Fujifilm look

    Age of Aquarius Film Recipe

    Age of Aquarius

I’ve been exploring mellow moods with film recipes recently, and wanted another recipe to compliment Mellow Magic and Vintage Mood, which both use Eterna. I think this image character is both unique to Fujifilm and also a beautiful tone in its own right.

For this relaxed recipe, I used Classic Negative, which has a built in nostalgic look. But, I also find it can be a bit too bold ‘as-is’ and benefits from a small amount of reining in. In this case, I trimmed highlights and reduced the saturation, and paired it with a warm colour balance based on 5000K temperature.

I kept the moody shadow tone at standard levels, which retains an impactful look. This also means that the recipe loves to work with sunlight, and is particularly pleasant when shooting towards the light. So, like it says in the Age of Aquarius song … Let the sunshine in ☀️

    Winter Magic Film Recipe

    Winter Magic

Here’s a wonderful guest recipe, devised by Tobias Gruber, a member of our photographer community on the Film Recipes Facebook Group.

He took a trip into the snowy forests, with his X-S10 camera, equiped with a Fujinon 23mm f1.4 lens. The film recipe used was such a success, that Tobias shared the results in the group and named it Winter Magic.

I’m so pleased to be able to share this with you here, along with a selection of Tobias’ photos that show off the winter friendly aesthetic of his recipe. I love the balance of Classic Negative tones with a neutrality that doesn’t overpower the scene. I know that you’ll love it too.

Afternoon Delight, When it’s Right, it’s Right

Everything’s a little clearer in the light of day, an afternoon film recipe

    Afternoon Delight Film Recipe

    Afternoon Delight

I was rewatching Anchorman for the umpteenth time, and I was reminded that I’d not yet written up my recipe page for Afternoon Delight. I’d made this Classic Negative recipe back in the early summer, looking for a great partner in the long afternoons and evenings.

I have several warm Classic Negative film recipes already, and for this one, I wanted a natural balance for maximum flexibility. Something unique, but not as warm as Goldeneye or as rich as Grizzly Bear.

It’s a very usable recipe, working well in sunny or cloudy conditions, and in the golden hour. So, despite it’s summer origins, it’s an all-year recipe.

It’s also the fourth in my occasional series of recipes named like song titles, joining Ruby Tuesday, Parklife and Karmachroma.

Dreamland, Warm and Cosy Like a Dream

Warm and hazy film recipe for a dream like look with strong colour

    Dreamland Film Recipe

    Dreamland

Here’s a film recipe with a feel good factor. The Dreamland film recipe brings a rich and warm tone to your images with a hazy softness like a remembered dream. It’s one of my more extreme film recipes with a high saturation and bold look.

At the heart of the look is Classic Negative, which is set at 5,500k with a 5, -5 additional shift into toasty warm territory. The softness comes from negative clarity, which you can also achieve with a cinebloom or mist filter.

This recipe prefers bright light or golden hour, giving somewhat treacle tones in dull conditions. However, if you like that, then consider it a bonus!
