Film Recipes to Try at Night

Film recipes suited to low light, night photography and artificial light

Night photography is a different discipline — artificial light sources, mixed colour temperatures, high contrast between lit areas and deep shadow. A recipe that looks great in daylight can fall apart under sodium streetlamps or neon signs, and vice versa.

These recipes have been selected for how they handle low light and artificial light sources. Many lean towards the cooler or more neutral side, which tends to work better with the blue and white of LED and fluorescent lighting that dominates modern night photography. A few are deliberately warmer, designed for the orange glow of older streetlights.

These recipes are drawn from both the site and the Film Recipes App, ordered first by how closely each recipe was designed to capture the try at night character — from direct interpretations through to inspired-by looks — and then by popularity within each group. App-only recipes are included and marked 🔒.
