Fujicolor Daily, a Classic Negative All Rounder

The Classic Negative film simulation brings a nostalgic film print look to our cameras that is reminiscent of Fujicolor prints, especially from 10+ years ago. Using the simulation with no adjustments is great, but there are also lots of possibilities as a recipe with adjustments to other settings.

    Fujicolor Daily

For Fujicolor Daily, I wanted to take an approach that brought out the feel of the Fujicolor film, whilst keeping a look that was as versatile as possible for daily use.

This recipe joins other ‘daily’ recipes, Kodak Portra Daily and Kodachrome Daily which are also versatile and highly usable.

Parklife, Cosy with just a little Blur

Classic Negative film simulation film recipe, with warm shift and boosted colour

    Parklife Film Recipe

    Parklife

I put my trousers on, have a cup of tea, and I think about leaving the house. Here’s the third in the occasional series of film recipes with names based on song titles. First we had Karmachroma, then Ruby Tuesday, and now we have Parklife. This recipe has boosted colour and a haze from clarity to give a warm cosy look for sunny days in the park and elsewhere.

The recipe is great in the sun, and even better around golden hour. It’ll no doubt be a good partner in what’s left of the Autumn season, with Classic Negative loving reds and oranges in the fall color. And, for our friends in tropical lands or the Southern Hemisphere, a great recipe for you too.

    King Negative Film Recipe

    King Negative

Here’s a film recipe that shows why it’s good to experiment, and why it’s great when photographers take a recipe and make changes to suit their style.

You see, I published the QE2 film recipe on Sept, 8th using Classic Chrome as a base. Fujifilm user Tuvshinbayar Davaa took this on a trip to Marlburg in Germany, and because of gloomy conditions, swapped to Classic Negative.

So here we have a descendent of QE2, which I have named King negative, following the line of succession. I just love how rich and vibrant the recipe is, and I’m sure I wouldn’t have tried this switch myself. We can all be thankful to Tuvshinbayar Davaa for the idea.

  • Tropicana, a Vibrant and Zesty Classic Neg

Tropicana, a Vibrant and Zesty Classic Neg

Bright, cheerful film recipe with punchy colour from Classic Negative

    Tropicana Film Recipe

    Tropicana

Tropicana is different things to different people. For some, it’s a fruit juice, whilst others remember the pop song by Wham! or a rather tasty Welsh beer. In my early childhood, it was an open air lido swimming pool where I learned to swim. That place was left empty for many years, before hosting art installations like Dismaland and more recently the See Monster.

But now, and obviously most excitingly, it’s a bright, cheery film recipe to bring bouncy colour to your photography. This recipe will be a good friend when you want to give a rich and colourful look to a scene, but without using overly obvious boosts to colour. The Classic Negative simulation provides the base style, with a +2 color, +1 shadow paired with 2 stops of over exposure delivering punch to your pictures. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

  • Fall Colormax, to Bring the Autumn Fire

Fall Colormax, to Bring the Autumn Fire

Rich and strong fall color film simulation recipe with Classic Negative

At the time of writing, Autumn is beginning to show, so I’ve been turning my attention to recipes for Autumn and Fall Color. Some of these feature soft golden tones and faded warmth, but we also need something with a bit of pop. If you want to max out the red and orange tones, then Fall Colormax is the recipe to use. It’s an extreme recipe, but it really does go big on fall color.

  • Grizzly Bear, a Recipe with Big Presence

Grizzly Bear, a Recipe with Big Presence

Punchy colours and strong grain in this classic negative film recipe

    Grizzly Bear Film Recipe

    Grizzly Bear

Sometimes, you want your photos to have impact, with punchy colours, deep shadows and character from grain. This recipe has been designed around those three features, and with such a big personality, is called Grizzly Bear.

The base film simulation is Classic Negative, with a strong grain and a positve clarity setting. This adds to the dramatic feel of the images, but does mean it may be a little slower to render and save the images. It’s all part of the look however, so that when you want a punchy slide-like result, you can ‘bring out the bear’!

  • Zinfandel Blush, with Sunset Rosé Tones

Zinfandel Blush, with Sunset Rosé Tones

Classic Negative film simulation recipe, adding warm and soft rosé wine tones

    Zinfandel Blush Film Recipe

    Zinfandel Blush

In my experiements with white balance, I have found that you can create some wonderfully moody effects with some of the stronger settings. For shooting emotional or sentimental photography, these can help set a mood, or provide consitency across a set.

For Zinfandel Blush, the tone was that of the rosé wine, and the intention was to bring a warmth to sunsets and a glowing atmospheric mood at other times. It’s something of an extreme style, mostly useful in golden hour, but that’s also one of the wonderful things about film recipes – you can choose ones for all sorts of situations.

To build this one, I had started from another recipe, Soft Cinnamon, and switched to Classic Negative as the base simulation. I love Classic Neg for sunsets in particular, and think it delivers wonderful colours in the golden hour. That’s when ths recipe comes into it’s own, although you can use it anytime of course.

Print like film recipe using the Classic Negative film simulation

    Restore from Backup Film Recipe

    Restore from Backup

Although there seems to be a lot of negative sentiment towards it nowadays, Instagram still has some excellent photography being shared, and I find that some of the best is found on some specific hashtags. One such tag is #restorefrombackup where users submit film photos and analog styled digital.

All the film favourites are there, with monotone, Portra, faded and classic negative print styles. In my Restore from Backup film recipe, I’ve taken Classic Negative and aimed to enhance its nostalgic 35mm print look with grain, warmth and punchy shadows. Most of the impact comes of course from Fujifilm’s tremendous Classic Negative simulation, and I love how print like the results can be with these settings.

  • Alpine Sun, like Summer in the Mountains

Alpine Sun, like Summer in the Mountains

Classic Negative film simulation recipe with a strong character for an alpine look

    Alpine Sun Film Recipe

    Alpine Sun

When I imagine alpine views, I think of lush greens and deep blue skies, perhaps with a scattering of wild flowers and charming log built houses. This film recipe attempts to bring that vibe to your photos, even if, like me, you live close to sea level and a long way from any mountains.

To get the effect, you need a bright day, and ideally some greenery too. It can also help to shoot into the light, or to include strong lighting in the image.

It’s fair to say that this is something of a specialist film recipe, with a strong character that makes it quite dependent on the conditions and subject. But, for an apline look in your own local area, it can be fun to bring a bit of Switzerland to your images.

    Nostalgic Fujicolor Film Recipe

    Nostalgic Fujicolor

Here’s a film recipe that uses the Classic Negative film simulation to give a versatile recipe for use in a wide variety of settings. It has a look that reminds me of Fujicolor film photos, thanks to the wonderfully retro tones of Classic Negative.

Characteristics of this film recipe are softened highlights, a warm colour balance and reduced saturation. It means that the overall recipe is quite subtle, producing mellow, film-like images without overpowering colour.
