    Manila Sun Film Recipe

    Manila Sun

One of the real treats in making this film recipes site, is when I get to share a guest recipe with you. I really love this one, and I’m so happy to include it.

Grant Teng lives in Manila, Philippines, and has developed a rich and characterful film recipe that uses Eterna Cinema. He’s chosen a fixed colour temperature, which suits outdoor and sunny photography, and keeps a consistent look across images if you include interior shots in a series.

Additional character is added with strong grain, strong chrome effects, pushed highlights and +2 sharpness. I love the result, which you can see below in these photos taken in the Bonifacio Global City area of Metro Manila. As well as the lush feel from the recipe, Grant has taken some of the images with a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 on his X-T4.

Natural Astia for Bright, Playful Colour

Film simulation recipe for X-Trans IV Fujifilm cameras using Astia

    Natural Astia Film Recipe

    Natural Astia

Summer landscapes are full of green, with fields, trees and plants bursting with colour, and summer blue skies. As autumn arrives, fields become golden and reds and oranges appear. To capture this richness, I took a step away from Classic Chrome and Classic Negative, and give one of the core simulations a try.

This recipe for colourful landscapes is based upon Astia, a softer look than Provia, but one that also has a bright and playful character. I also warmed the colour balance a little to take off any blue tint to the trees and leaves, and reduced both the saturation and shadow depth. This leaves us with a happy and bright recipe that is still distinctly Astia, with cheery reds and blues, and soft look greens.

  • Toasty Chrome, Warm & Retro Chrome

Toasty Chrome, Warm & Retro Chrome

A warm nostalgic classic chrome film simulation recipe for Fujifilm cameras

    Toasty Chrome Film Recipe

    Toasty Chrome

The Classic Chrome film simulation is a wonderful look, and a versatile base for building recipes. Out of the box, Classic Chrome is fabulously retro, but a little cool, so adding creamy warmth makes for a lovely nostalgic look.

That’s what we have here, with a Shade/Cloudy white balance, with additional shift. The result is wonderfully warm, working really well in golden hour and in sunny conditions. It sits somewhere in the same area as the deeper Yakisugi and more nostalgic Retrochrome. Also similar is Rosa Negative, with a warm tone but lower saturation.

    Nostalgic Fujicolor Film Recipe

    Nostalgic Fujicolor

Here’s a film recipe that uses the Classic Negative film simulation to give a versatile recipe for use in a wide variety of settings. It has a look that reminds me of Fujicolor film photos, thanks to the wonderfully retro tones of Classic Negative.

Characteristics of this film recipe are softened highlights, a warm colour balance and reduced saturation. It means that the overall recipe is quite subtle, producing mellow, film-like images without overpowering colour.

  • P45, Warm Tones Provia Simulation

    P45, Warm Tones Provia Simulation

Provia based film recipe with warm tones and natural contrast.

    P45 Film Recipe

    P45

The Provia simulation is the most neutral of the film simulations on a Fujifilm camera, with natural colour and contrast. This film recipe works with this neutrality, adding just a few extra elements. This is a recipe for working with the conditions, rather than trying to transform them into something else.

The main change is to warm up the colour balance, with a +4, -5 shift, giving the 45 in the recipe name. Otherwise, colour is gently softened with a -2 colour setting, and all other changes are small tweaks. This leaves the recipe very usable in a wide range of conditions, but still bringing a little soft tone warmth to your photos.

The only setting in the recipe that isn’t compatible with older cameras is a weak amount of color chrome blue, which you can skip on older sensors for almost the same look.

Pastel Vibes Film Recipe, by Willow Rotter

X100v Classic Negative film recipe for beautiful blues and whites

    Pastel Vibes Film Recipe

    Pastel Vibes

The beautiful Greek island of Santorini is a photography paradise, with its characteristic white and blue buildings and far reaching ocean views. This colour palette has been masterfully captured by Willow Rotter on his X100V using his film recipe, Pastel Vibes.

Willow’s photographic style is towards ‘high key’ with images typically over exposed by +1. In this recipe, a -2 setting for highlights helps to preserve detail and give a wonderfully bright and airy image. He also says, that if you want the highlights to be a little red use R: 0, rather than R: -1. Some of the photos was R: 0 & some are R: -1.

When taking a trip away, it’s great ot have a couple of general use film recipes that allow you to capture memories of a wde variety of scenes.

For quite some time, I’ve enjoyed Nomadic Mood, by Ivan Cheam, but I sometimes find it a bit too dark. Starting from his settings, I made this Classic Negative recipe to be bright and clean, with a warm colour tone, punchy shadows and lovely blues in the sky.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe with a strong warm colour shift

    Goldeneye Film Recipe

    Goldeneye

Here’s a recipe to deliver happy vibes in the sunshine, and bring your Autumn and Fall colours to life. Goldeneye is an ultra warm and rich film recipe with a strong cosy aesthetic.

The base simulation is Classic Negative, that works really well with reds and yellows, and this is given a further boost with a super warm colour setting and a little softness from -1 sharp and -1 clarity. The result is dreamy and rich, working especially well in golden hour and should be just perfect for the details of the colourful seasons.
