Oceanic 815 for Deep Ocean Blues

A lot of my film recipes feature soft tones or faded tones for a nostalgic look. Sometimes however, it’s good to have some deeper tones to help style the image in a more impactful way.

    Oceanic 815

I developed this recipe for a specific purpose. To shoot images of the ocean from up on the cliffs above. It’s aim is to enhance the blues of the sea and add some stylish contrast to a scene. It should be great for beach holidays and coastal walks. Just don’t get LOST.

Creamy Kodak Portra film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-trans IV cameras

    Kodak Portra 66 Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra 66

Some things seem to be made to go together, and in our world of film simulations and recipes, it’s Kodak Portra and fading Americana. Think of an abandoned gas station on a dusty desert highway. Creamy tones and washed out colours give a nostalgic feel. It’s the retro look of a trip along Route 66.

I haven’t been to the American West in about a decade, so I developed this recipe closer to home. I took it out and about on a city walk in Winchester and on some walks in the New Forest.

  • Soft Cinnamon with Delicious Tones

    Soft Cinnamon with Delicious Tones

Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe with a soft nostalgic look

    Soft Cinnamon Film Recipe

    Soft Cinnamon

Here’s a recipe that’s really tasty! It’s a soft and mellow film recipe, based on the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation. It has a warm cinnamon colour shift, and with reduced contrast and a little softness, it’s not at all overpowering. In fact, it’s a gentle recipe with a subtle cinnamon tone to the neutrals. Delicious!

Over time, I find myself coming back to this recipe again and again, and I am always impressed with how it renders all sorts of conditions from mid summer to the winter snow. It’s one of my personal favourites. You can see more of them on the Shortlist of Favourite Recipes.

  • Eternal Summer with Cinematic Portra Tones

Eternal Summer with Cinematic Portra Tones

Fujifilm film simulation for X-Trans IV giving Portra 160 looks with Eterna

    Eternal Summer Film Recipe

    Eternal Summer

Here’s an Eterna based film recipe that gives a clear but soft look that you can use all summer. It works really well in sunlight, giving a soft tone, capturing tones with that wonderfully cinematic look that Fujifilm’s Eterna does so well.

When shooting with it, I found it has a creamy feel quite similar to the popular Kodak Portra 160 or 400 recipes, especially in scenes with blue sky. This is probably a little gentler the those recipes, but there is a cinematic Portra vibe here that I think looks great, especially in the sunshine.

  • Kodachrome Classic for 70s Kodak Style

Kodachrome Classic for 70s Kodak Style

Vintage Kodachrome film recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

    Kodachrome Classic Film Recipe

    Kodachrome Classic

The classic Kodachrome films are much loved, and with adjustments to the Classic Chrome film simulation, images that reflect this era can be readily achieved on Fujifilm X-series cameras.

Early Kodachrome films had creamy skintones and delicious blues, giving them a character that is deeply connected to that era. Anything with creams, browns and blues looked fantastic on 60s and 70s Kodachrome film.

My Kodachrome Classic recipe seeks to emulate the spirirt of these early photos, with a slide film feel and richly retro tone like a classic 60s and 70s Kodachrome photo. I find that it loves bright conditions and blue skies, so it would be a perfect companion on travel and vacations.

Kodak Portra for a Classic Soft Look

Film simulation recipe for Kodak Portra 160 looks on X-Trans 4 cameras

    Kodak Portra Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra

There’s a magical romance that surrounds Kodak Portra film, and I see photos with recipes for Portra 160, 400 or 800 about as often as anything other than Kodachrome. The film itself is beautiful, with soft warm creamy tones that are kind to faces, but also work really well in sunlight for urban, desert and nostalgia shots. Think faded Americana, and you’ve probably seen Portra.

The recipe aims to show off that creamy 160 warmth and low tonal range that makes Kodak Porta such a popular choice. I’ve kept the colour down a touch, in keeping with my perference, and taken a small grain option. It’s soft, delicate and refined.

  • Soft Negative film recipe with Classic Negative

Soft Negative film recipe with Classic Negative

Fujifilm simulation Soft Negative recipe for X-Trans IV cameras

    Soft Negative Film Recipe

    Soft Negative

This film recipe is intended to be a versatile all rounder which can be used in a wide variety of conditions. It is based on the excellent classic negative simulation, adapted with color balance amd tone curve for softer, nostalgic tone.

These changes add softness and warmth to the classic negative look, giving a gentle mood a bit loke old negative prints. I call it Soft Negative, because of this characteristic, although I did initially call it Aged Negative when I first created it.

It works espcially well in the golden hour around sunrise or sunset, and renders lovely skies around this time of day. Even in twilight, the tones have a cosy, but not overpowering style. That doesn’t mean it’s not suitable at other times of course, and I find it works well on cloudy and dull days too.

For me, this is the soft and nostalgic style I was looking to achieve with my Fujifilm X-Series, and I take more shots with this and other soft tones recipes than anything else.

You might also like: Pale Negative, which has a similar look and feel, or Nostalgic Fujicolor with a retro feel from similar settings.
