Provia film simulation recipe for a clean crisp look

    Lucky 13 Film Recipe

    Lucky 13

With all the fuss and hype that surrounds the nostalgic simulations, like Classic Chrome and Classic Negative, poor old Provia doesn’t get much love. Let’s change that now with a simple recipe that makes just a few adjustments to this reliable workhorse film simulation.

In developing this recipe, I wanted to keep the neutral clean colour of Provia, but make small nods toward my soft tones style. So, we have gently softened highlights and shadows, a little less saturation, and for a crisp finish, some positive clarity. You can leave this off however, if you prefer to keep shooting uninterrupted by the processing delay.

Fuji Five-O, for Life on the Water

As you’ll be able to tell by the number of beach and boats photos on this site, I live near the English coast, where are there is always something happening on the water. Whether this is sailing, swimming, a passing cruise ship, or the latest craze, SUP (or stand-up paddleboarding), it’s a good source of photographic subject matter.

    Fuji Five-O Film Recipe

    Fuji Five-O

With all that blue water around me, it’s natural that at least some of my recipes will be designed to work well for life on the water. This one, which I’ve called Fuji Five-O, brings out the blues in a scene, with creamy neutrals and, because it’s based on Classic Negative, those print style greens.

It uses a fixed colour temperature, negative clarity and soft tone curve, which adds to the aesthetic throughout the day, giving a pale softness to golden hour, and keeping blues prominent, which I personally really like.

Fujifilm simulation recipe for Classic Negative on X-Trans IV cameras

Back in the Day Film Recipe

    Back in the Day

One of the most interesting film simulations on Fuji X-series cameras is Classic Negative. If you go back and find film photos printed back in the peak days of Fujicolor 35mm films like Reala, Superia, etc., you’ll see a look that has been magically recreated by the Fujifilm engineers.

This leads me to a deeply nostaligic film recipe, based on Classic Negative that celebrates this old film prints style. It’s set to push up the highlights and colour, because these tweaks give a look that I remember from prints in the 90s, and adds a little softness to hide the digital nature of the shots a little.

The recipe is called Back in the Day, and is great for sunny days and all those holidays and days out that you would have captured on your 35mm camera, back in the day.

Kodak Portra film simulation recipe for Fujifillm cameras using Eterna

    Aged Kodak Portra Film Recipe

    Aged Kodak Portra

For this recipe, I was inspired by an Instagram that I follow, expiredbren who posts a really great set of images with Portra and Gold films, and sometimes expired rolls too.

In some of his recent images (June & July ’22), he’s been posting classic VWs, and I just love the tones of the images. This green Beetle is one of his IG shots, go follow him for more.

In this film recipe, I wanted to try and achieve a similar look, so I came up with an Eterna based set-up that I call, Aged Kodak Portra.

I’ve done some test shots in a variety of situations, and I think this recipe is at least similar to the wonderfully warm and faded look in Bren’s images.

Pro Neg Standard film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV

    Natural Standard Film Recipe

    Natural Standard

Here’s a wonderful film recipe that captures the green of nature in a serene way. It’s a great choice for walks in natural surroundings, like woodlands, forests and nature parks.

Natural Standard has a soft tone look, with mid saturation and softened shadows. This helps to tame the extremes in a scene and give a mellow and calm look. This helps it work well in all conditions, making it a great general use outdoor recipe.

The settings for this recipe are simple with minor adjustments and a gently warmed colour balance. The use of the Pro Negative simulation and these settings allow the nature in your shots to be the focus of the image, rather than the retro effects of the film simulation.

A Classic Chrome film simulation recipe for use with Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

    Westworld Film Recipe

    Westworld

Bring yourself back online. Here’s a really useful film recipe for your trip to The Park. It has a bit of everything that’s great about Classic Chrome, with retro Kodak aesthetics, a subtly altered colour balance, and slightly muted highlights and saturation. It reminds me of the classic Kodachrome 64 look.

I’m a bit of a Westworld geek, and to mark the return of the mind bending HBO series for its 4th set of episodes, I’ve named this recipe Westworld. But, whether you enjoy watching the journey of Dolores and Bernard or not, this is a wonderful choice for all sorts of photos with a classic Kodak vibe.

Fujiflim film simulation recipe with Classic Negative for X-Trans IV cameras

    CN24 Film Recipe

    CN24

Classic Negative 24 or CN24 is a general use option for shooting on Fujifilm X-series with the Classic Negative film simulation. It uses a white balance adjustment of +2, -4, which gives it the 24 in the name.

I’m a big fan of Classic Negative and the amazing tones it produces. It’s one of the sims that led me to buy my Fujifilm X-S10 and I love shooting with it. With CN24, I wanted to add to the everyday usability of Classic Negative with the addition of a creamy tone, and slightly less blue in the greens.

    Gold Standard Film Recipe

    Gold Standard

It’s good to have a setting that you can just rely on, and know it’ll give a great result in all sorts of conditions. This recipe is based upon Pro Neg Standard, and is aimed at being a good-to-go film recipe.

The look was modelled on the Kodak Gold aesthetic, with a warmer tone and mid-saturation colours. It shares a number of settings, including the colour balance with the Kodak Gold recipe that uses Classic Chrome. This recipe is richer, with a bit more punch, reflecting the use of Pro Negative Standard.

If your memory of Kodak Gold is something from an earlier decade, you might also enjoy Kojak Gold, a nostalgic take on the Kodak Gold 200 look.

    Rosa Negative Film Recipe

    Rosa Negative

Some of the best light for taking photographs is found during the golden hour around sunrise and sunset. The softness of the light, coupled with the longer shadows and warmer hues, make taking beautiful photos a lot easier.

Photographer Kebs Cayabyab, has developed some recipes on his YouTube channel, including a wonderfully warm Provia recipe called Dela Rosa (2nd recipe in the clip) that he uses in his late afternoon street photography.

I’ve enjoyed his recipe, and in experimenting with it, developed a variant that uses Classic Negative with a couple of stops of overexposure. I call this version Rosa Negative, and like Keb’s original, it’s wonderful in golden hour.
