A classic chrome film recipe for a Kodachrome look for Fujifilm X-Trans IV

    Kodacolor Ambience Film Recipe

    Kodacolor Ambience

This film simulation recipe is one of set of three that I created with a specific aim in mind. I wanted to embrace the qualities of the Kodak look in a pure form, and bring the character of the Classic Chrome film simulation out into the open.

In this recipe, you get a strongly Kodachrome look, but without it being specifically Kodachrome 64 or Kodachrome 25. It has somthing of the character of both of these, but is also definitely Fujifillm Classic Chrome at the same time.

Colours are rich, shadows and deep and luxurious, and the blues are full of nostalgic character. This simple recipe is Kodacolor in a pure form.

Milestone, a Classic Chrome for 10,000

A Classic Chrome film silmulation recipe with a 10,000K colour temperature base

    Milestone Film Recipe

    Milestone

It doesn’t seem long ago that I was feeling happy that 100 people had joined the Film Recipes Facebook Group and wondering if that was about as far as it would go. Well, we just passed through 10,000 members, and it’s still growing.

I started the group as a way to share the new film recipes that I added to this site, and as a place for film recipe fans to come together and ask questions and show their sample images. Bringing people together, the group is also the main place that people join in the Film Recipes challenge, that runs every couple of weeks. Details for this are in the panel below.

For this recipe, I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could make an everyday film recipe from the extreme 10,000K color temperature at the top of the scale in my camera. This is a very warm setting, and is almost tangerine orange without some taming, so it’s paired with heavy a correctional shift that brings it back to something more normal.

The result is a Classic Chrome with a warm toned mellow look, that is in part nostalgic and part film like. I think the look sits somewhere on the Kodak spectrum, sitting between Kodachrome and Kodak Portra. I’m really pleased with how it came out and happy to share it as a little celebration recipe as we pass the milestone of 10k members.

    Flatpack, Matte 35mm Film Recipe

Fujifilm simulation film recipe for a flat tone matte look like Kodak 35mm prints

    Flatpack Film Recipe

    Flatpack

This film recipe began life as an attempt to match a look I had seen with 35mm film photos taken on Kodak film. I had really liked the low contrast matte look, and wanted to be able to shoot with something similar on my Fujifilm camera.

Whilst this recipe does capture the flat look and colour tones I had seen, it was very specific to a single set of samples I had seen. So, rather than name it after the Kodak film stock, I decided to tweak it some more and embrace the flat matte look.

What we have then, is a general Kodak film-like look, reminiscent of some 35mm photography, with a muted tone and soft, matte like feel.

The base simulation is Classic Chrome, with a color chrome effect and small shift from the shade/cloudy colour balance. Shadows and highlights are both compressed to the -2 setting.

Like all the film recipes on this site, it was designed for recent X-Trans IV cameras, but with the exception of color chrome blue, this recipe is widely compatible with easy adaptation for older cameras too.

Classic Chrome film simulation recipe that emulates a vintage lens style

    Xylochrome Film Recipe

    Xylochrome

Druring my film recipe creation process, I occasionally hit on a settings combination that produces a look that is completely different than I had expected. This experiment was just like that.

I was playing with X RAW Studio to make a Classic Chrome recipe with a downward scale of settings with 5, 4, 3 ,2 ,1 starting with a colour temperature of 5430K, a shift of 2, 1, and so on through the settings, until I added at the end of the scale, the strongest negative clarity setting, -5.

I normally avoid settings quite this strong, but on this occasion it added a softness that immediately reminded me of vintage lens photos that I had seen. The softness was like an imperfection, with a character that was decidely analog, especially in the out of focus areas of my images.

This vintage blur isn’t so visible at phone screen sizes, so I’ve provided a crop in the image below.

    Cineplus Film Recipe

    Cineplus

Sometimes, when developing film recipes, the inspiration comes in the form of a single image. This was one of those occasions, when this fifties style image was posted in the Facebook group as an interesting look.

I kept returning to it, trying to find a recipe that came close to this interesting retro style.

The look sits somewhere between Classic Chrome and Classic Negative, and having explored both, I settled on Classic Chrome as the base simulation. To this, I added rich colour and tested various colour balances, until I settled on the below combination.

I didn’t have any 50’s interiors to work with, so I tried it with a by usual range of natural and landscape scenes. Whether it matches the source image, I don’t know, but I love how it has come out.

Classic chrome film simulation recipe for X-Trans IV based on Kodak 35mm film

    Kodak Pro Image Film Recipe

    Kodak Pro Image

Here’s a Classic Chrome film simulation recipe that mimics a 35mm film from Kodak. The film in question is Kodak Pro Image 100, which was released into a spot somewhere between Kodak’s Portra and Gold films, sitting in the professionsal film range, but at an everyday price. It’s something of a mid-position film with 35mm qualities that I found I could mimic with Classic Chrome.

The Kodak Pro Image film recipe, keeps the colour balance close to neutral, and relies on the Color Chrome effects to deliver film like character that I observed when reviewing samples of the Pro Image 100 film stock.

Because this recipe uses Color Chrome Blue and one step of Clarity, it does mean it is designed for the later X-Trans IV cameras, although you may be able to get similar results on other models by using just the settings that your camera supports.

It’s great to be able to share a second recipe by Tobias Gruber. I loved his seasonal Winter Magic recipe, which brought snowy scenes to life. But, like any recipe for snow and ice, it’s something a little bit specialist.

Well, for this recipe, Tobias has developed a variation of Classic Chrome that is extremely usable and adaptable to a wide variety of sistuations.

In his own words, Tobias says, “I’ve been looking for a while for a recipe for myself that meets the following criteria:

This recipe works perfectly for me personally and I would like to present it to you today.”

    Vinterkrom

A few days ago, I published the Vinterskog film recipe, bringing moody cinematic teal blue tones to winter and autumn scenes. I’m super excited about how the recipe came out, and just love shooting with it.

However, Vinterskog is based upon Eterna Bleach Bypass, which is not available on many popular Fujifilm cameras, including the all star X100V. So, I wanted to see if I could get close to the same look using a more widely available film simulation.

Classic Chrome to the rescue. Here’s my adaptation of the cool cinematic tones of the misty winter forests, rebuilt using this favourite film simulation.

    Chromium 44

Sometimes, what you need is a simple Classic Chrome recipe that isn’t overstyled, and doesn’t shout for attention because of the tone or hue. An everyday film recipe that just looks good.

That was what was in my mind when creating Chromium 44. It’s based on the Classic Chrome film simulation, and has a medium warm tone from a Daylight balance with a 4, -4 shift. Other than that, there are slightly softer highlights and reduced saturation to produce soft and smooth images.

The tone is warm, but still natural, and is particularly suited to the paler light in the winter, or when you don’t want an overly vibrant result.

A slight nostalgic haze has been added with a -2 clarity setting, which softens things a touch more. You can always skip that setting of course, but I hope that you’ll enjoy the results. This soft tone recipe doesn’t demand attention, letting your photos do the talking.

Vintage Kodachrome, The Hip Classic Chrome

Kodachrome film recipe with a nostalgic 1960s Classic Chrome look

    Vintage Kodachrome Film Recipe

    Vintage Kodachrome

Far out! This is one hip film recipe for groovy 1960’s toned images. The output is wonderfully retro with a real vintage feel, but is still completely usable all day in a wide range of situations. It’s part of my growing collection of Kodak themed recipes, and sits somewhere between my original Kodachrome recipe, and the softer Kodak Portra Daily.

The magic of this recipe lies in the tremendous tones of Classic Chrome which are enhanced here with warm colour balance and tone adjustments to give a bright look with soft shadows.

In many ways, this is Classic Chrome dialed up, giving a classic Kodachrome feel with a vintage edge. It’s great in a variety of situations, and throughout the seasons.
