Classic chrome film simulation recipe with soft golden tones

    Muted Gold Film Recipe

    Muted Gold

Some film recipes bring a strongly uniform look across a set of images, helping a series of photos work together. Muted Gold is such a recipe with a specific look from a strong colour shift paired with muted saturation and softened shadows.

The colour balance is very warm, but particularly brings a lot of mellow character out in the greens of a scene. This pale and creamy green is warm and nostalgic, giving a ‘last days of summer’ feel to photos. As the seasons change around us, this recipe should be a good choice for autumn photography too.

Punchy Classic Chrome recipe for X-T4 with deep shadows and a bold look

    Manila Chrome Film Recipe

    Manila Chrome

Here’s the second guest recipe by Manila based photographer, Grant Teng. If you didn’t yet see it, Manila Sun is a wonderful Eterna recipe for urban exploration and sunny day photography. It works well with the tropical light especially, but I’ve used it and loved it in the UK as well.

What we have here though is a superbly versatile Classic Chrome recipe. Again it’s fantastic in the city, but also has great versatility. So much so, Grant also calls it his ‘Daily Chrome’. It brings out the best of Classic Chrome with a warmed color balance, deep shadows and punchy colour.

Thassos 22, Travel Chrome by Călin Stan

Classic Chrome film recipe with boosted colour for travel photography

    Thassos 22 Film Recipe

    Thassos 22

There are some subjects that seem to suit certain film simulations more than others. Summer travels often take in creamy beaches, blue seas and vibrant colourful scenes. Classic Negative jumps to mind, or perhaps Velvia.

However, as the seasons begin to change and the sun drops lower, a paler sunlight and more brown tones in the vegetation start to lean towards the use of Classic Chrome.

In this wonderful film recipe by Călin Stan, the sights of Thassos (a Greek island in the Aegean Sea), are beautifully captured with just small changes to the standard settings of Classic Chrome. The results were so good, that I contacted Călin, and suggested featuring Thassos 22 on the site.

Karmachroma, a Mellow Lo-Fi Classic Chrome

A nostalgic classic chrome film simulation recipe for X-Trans IV cameras

    Karmachroma Film Recipe

    Karmachroma

Sometimes, I have a name for a recipe before I have the settings to go with it. This is one of those occasions, when hearing the lo-fi song by Massive Attack, I thought that I just had to make a recipe called Karmachroma.

In keeping with the mood of the song, I’ve devised a mellow and laid back recipe, with a warm tone and 1990’s lo-fi styling. It likes nice bright conditions, where it produces a retro image that reminds me somewhat of old prints and postcards.

This film recipe with Classic Chrome also marks a moment in the development of this recipe site, as it is film recipe no. 100 in the collection. I never expected to be able to devise so many distinct looks when I got started, but here we are with 100 recipes and still more to come!

Documentary, to Capture Life As It Is

Fujifilm X-Trans 4 film simulation recipe using Classic Chrome

    Documentary Film Recipe

    Documentary

For a natural look that isn’t overly stylised, this recipe uses Classic Chrome with only minor adjustments to the base settings. This allows you to capture life as it is, shooting the world around you in a documentary style.

In a way, the small adjustments do pull against the Classic Chrome simulation, bringing it back closer to neutral, with a slight warming and small boost to colour. But, with the values of all settings being small, the personality of Classic Chrome is still the defining characteristic of this recipe.

QE2, On the Passing of Her Majesty

A warm, positive film recipe using the Classic Chrome film simulation

    QE2 Film Recipe

    QE2

On 8th September, I was walking in the New Forest when news started to come in, that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was unwell and her family were gathering. Later in the day, her passing was announced. Having served my country for so long, her death has affected millions of people, and it has been a truly sad day.

The audience of this site is international and so rather than black banners or other symbols, I’m naming this new film recipe QE2 as a simple tribute. Like Her Majesty was, this recipe is full of warmth and positivity, and brings colour and brighness to a scene.

  • Toasty Chrome, Warm & Retro Chrome

Toasty Chrome, Warm & Retro Chrome

A warm nostalgic classic chrome film simulation recipe for Fujifilm cameras

    Toasty Chrome Film Recipe

    Toasty Chrome

The Classic Chrome film simulation is a wonderful look, and a versatile base for building recipes. Out of the box, Classic Chrome is fabulously retro, but a little cool, so adding creamy warmth makes for a lovely nostalgic look.

That’s what we have here, with a Shade/Cloudy white balance, with additional shift. The result is wonderfully warm, working really well in golden hour and in sunny conditions. It sits somewhere in the same area as the deeper Yakisugi and more nostalgic Retrochrome. Also similar is Rosa Negative, with a warm tone but lower saturation.

Yakisugi Film Recipe, by Mehdi Berrada

A deep tones film recipe using Classic Chrome simulation and dark shadows

    Yakisugi Film Recipe

    Yakisugi

Based in Morocco, Mehdi Berrada is an architect and Fujifilm photographer who shoots stylish images with his X100V. His film recipe, Yakisugi has been receiving lots of positive reaction, but had no web page with the details. So, here we have the Yakisugi film recipe, by Mehdi Berrada.

Yakisugi, if you were curious, is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation that involves flame treating the outer layer. The resulting colour palette is dark and charred, and this character comes through in the muted tones of this film recipe.
