Classic Chrome film simulation recipe with grey green colour balance

    Quicklime Film Recipe

    Quicklime

As a fan of film recipes, I enjoy looking at photos shared by others and seeing how they use recipes in different situations.

On this occasion, Roberto Foroni posted an atmospheric image through a cafe window in a film recipe Facebook group.

I loved the look of this one in particular, but of course, the glass was part of the effect. So, I set to work trying to make a recipe that could create that look and feel in general outdoor conditions.

Neutrals have a slightly grey green cast, which leads to the Quicklime name. It’s a tone I see in indoor photography quite often, but I found I really enjoyed it for my photo walks in woods and forests too.

Acheive a cinematic look and feeel with Classic Chrome on X100V

    Cinematic Chrome Film Recipe

    Cinematic Chrome

Achieving a cinematic look with a Fujifilm camera is made much easier by the presence of the built in Eterna Cinema simulation. But, what if you’re not into Eterna, and prefer Classic Chrome? Can a cinematic look be created with this simulation too?

That’s the challenge I’ve been tackling in this film simulation recipe. I wanted to achieve a tone that was evocative of moody and intelligent cinema, perhaps in a movie that takes it’s time to set a scene with some atmospheric shots of scenery before bringing you into a scene.

With Classic Chrome and some adjustments to the tone cure and colour balance shift, I found that I could capture this feeling in a ready to go film recipe, that give a cine feel, straight out of camera. I hope you enjoy the result.

  • Rescued Colorplus, from a found Kodak film

Rescued Colorplus, from a found Kodak film

Classic Chrome film recipe based on Kodak Colorplus 200 film

    Rescued Colorplus Film Recipe

    Rescued Colorplus

I like to follow some 35mm photography groups on social media, gaining inspiration from the images and styles of the various film stocks. In one post, I read about someone who discovered a roll of Kodak Colorplus 200 in a bargain bin of a store, and even though it was past expiry, bought it and tried it out.

I enjoyed the story and the images (which of course, I have since lost the link to), but I did use them as inspiration for this film recipe. The exposed images were bright and colourful, with a nostalgic Kodak style … just right to model with Classic Chrome.

So, here we have Rescued Colorplus, for a bright, film like look, based on an out-of-date roll of Kodak film. The settings are simple, so that even though it was developed on X-Trans IV, you could adapt it to other cameras with ease.

Candy pink and purple tones with Classic Chrome for sunrise and sunset

    Sherbert Sunrise Film Recipe

    Sherbert Sunrise

I’ve been experimenting in X RAW Studio a fair bit recently, as it’s a great way to try out new setting combinations and develop film recipes. I like to try colour balance settings away from my usual comfort zone, and see how these look on different RAW files.

It was some of this experimenting that led me to this recipe. It’s base is Classic Chrome, which is boosted with +3 colour and shifted into a slightly pink-purple tone with a +4, +4 adjustment.

I found that this candy toned hint was especially well suited to sunrise and sunset images, with an etheral fantasy like quality. When experimenting with some saved RAW files, I also loved the look on frosty winter scenes too. I’ve provided a good range of image samples below, so you can see if you like it, and of course the settings to give it a try for yourself.

  • Seventies Summer, with Warm Nostalgic Vibes

Seventies Summer, with Warm Nostalgic Vibes

Classic Chrome film recipe with a nostalgic look inspired by 1970s summertime

    Seventies Summer Film Recipe

    Seventies Summer

Where I live, the weather is warm at the moment, and the days are hazy and long. Fans have been brought down from the loft to move air around the house, and fruit lollies are on the menu during afternoons in the garden.

This reminds me of my childhood, with summer days spent playing in the heat. I’ve been exploring this nostalgic summer vibe quite a bit recently, including with the Childhood Vacation recipe bringing a retro look like prints from this time. There’s also the Summer of ’76 recipe, and the creamy wash of Spanish Summer as additional releases inspired by the summer sunshine.

But, our wonderful cameras have even more scope for aged looks that remind us of images from previous decades. This look is one such recipe, sitting somewhere between the Vintage Kodachome and Olympus Trip 35 film recipes in style.

This recipe has aging print hints thanks to a red shift that evokes memories of old photos, and with the Classic Chrome simulation and Color Chrome effects, a nostalgic quality, that reminds me a little of magazine prints from that era. If you find the result too pink, you may prefer the Milestone film recipe or Retrochrome, but for me, there’s something special about this combination of seventies elements rolled up into one recipe.

Kodachrome 60s, a Classic Kodak Chrome

Classic Chrome film recipe for X-Trans IV in a 1960’s Kodachrome style

    Kodachrome 60s Film Recipe

    Kodachrome 60s

If there is one name that is synonymous with photography from the second half of the twentieth century, it is Kodak. For so many of the most momentous images that marked the history of the era, Kodachrome film was how they were captured.

Our cameras come with the Classic Chrome film simulation, which brings a base look that is similar to images from the era. When partnered with the color chrome effect, and adjustments to color balance and tone curve, nostalgic retro looks in the Kodak style can be achieved.

There are many out there, with a good selection on this site, and Fuji X Weekly. This one is new in that it provides a bold and characterful interpretation, that for me, is closest to shots processed in the 1960s. Blues in particular are striking from this recipe, and the overall image has a wonderful sixties style look.

  • Waystar, with Billionaire Blues

    Waystar, with Billionaire Blues

It’s the end of a television highlight, as the compelling and dramatic HBO series, Succession draws to an end. This TV series has been one of my favourites. Watching the desperate infighting and grovelling of the Roy family children, has been equal parts stressful and hilarious. As I write this, I have the final episode still to go, so don’t worry, there will be no spoilers here!

    Waystar Film Recipe

    Waystar

In the promotional imagery for the series, and in some of the scenes, there is a strong use of blue, including in the set dressing and suits and outfits that the cast wear. So, for this recipe, I’ve looked to make the most of blue, with Classic Chrome and a striking cobalt tone.

Whilst this recipe started as a bit of fun, it’s actually an impactful look when used for coastal shots or landscapes with large sections of blue sky. Maybe you’ll give it a try, and will enjoy making power moves of your own.

Slide Film 400, Positive Film Style

Classic Chrome film simulation recipe with fine grain and slide like color

    Slide Film 400 Film Recipe

    Slide Film 400

I never shot slide film during my 35mm camera days, but I was always impressed with the rich color and deep contrast. Blues in particular seemed so vivid, and I never quite managed to replicate that with negative film.

Now that I’m shooting digital with my Fujifilm X Series, I get to play at shooting in a slide film style with a film recipe with some of the same qualities.

In this film recipe, I have used Classic Chrome as the base, but have boosted the colour with a +4 setting. The colour is further enhanced by shooting at 1 stop underexposed, with the -1/3 setting. Other elements include a fine grain, DR400 for smooth highlights, and a -1 shadows setting, which keeps shadows deep but natural with the underexposure.

    Re-Analog

Marcel Fraij is a photographer and educator based in the Netherlands. He has an inspiring style, often including detail views of textures, forms and partly blurred figures. His themed galleries are especially improssive, and you can explore some of these on his photography and recipes site.

I’m a big fan, so it was great to chat with Marcel recently about a new recipe of his. As you’ll see below, it has a distinctive creamed and contrasty Classic Chrome style, that is particular suited to holiday and vacation shots, or scenes including wood and sand textures.

Marcel suggested that I share this recipe here with you, and I am very happy to be able to do so. The guest recipes on this site provide another perspective on film recipe looks, and I’m excited to add Re-Analog to the collection.

    Kodak Portra Urban

When I travel into a city, I still have my photography itch, and will often go for an early walk from my hotel before breakfast. Golden hour in an urban environment is often quite different in feel to the mornings and evenings in my usual forests and country lanes, so I’ve put together a recipe for such occasions.

I’ve looked to captured the harder brightness of a city environment, along with the creamy Kodak vibes of the Portra style. The result is this urbex film recipe for taking city walks and street photos in a Kodak Portra style.
