This is a simple recipe that is designed to bring out the character of Fujifilm Classic Chrome. It loves sunny days and is great with blues and greens especially. It’s crisp and bright, and for me it feels very Fuji, so I simply named it Fujichrome.

Vintage Kodachrome film recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

The classic Kodachrome films are much loved, and with adjustments to the Classic Chrome film simulation, images that reflect this era can be readily achieved on Fujifilm X-series cameras.

Early Kodachrome films had creamy skintones and delicious blues, giving them a character that is deeply connected to that era. Anything with creams, browns and blues looked fantastic on 60s and 70s Kodachrome film.

My Kodachrome Classic recipe seeks to emulate the spirirt of these early photos, with a slide film feel and richly retro tone like a classic 60s and 70s Kodachrome photo. I find that it loves bright conditions and blue skies, so it would be a perfect companion on travel and vacations.

Classic Chrome film recipe for Fujifilm X100V, X-E4, X-S10, X-T4, X-T30ii

Sometimes you just want a simple classic look that works just about everywhere. The Soft Chrome film recipe is my interpretation of that. It takes the versatile Classic Chrome film simulation, and adds a soft tone vibe.

And although this recipe isn’t a Kodak clone, it still shares many of the same qualities, thanks to the wonderful tones of the Classic Chrome simulation. It uses settings that capture a lower contrast and saturation, meaning that this recipe can be used is just about any situation.

Brown tinted film recipe with cafe tones for X-Trans IV Fujifilm cameras

Here’s a Fuji camera film recipe for X-series that captures a coffee brown colour tone, to add a sophisticated warmth in a low saturation image. It works well in the golden hour, turning it into the cafe latte hour.

The colour shift is quite strong in this film recipe, shifting Classic Chrome with a colour temp of 8100k plus a +1, +5 adjustment. Shadows are deep with a +2 setting, and saturation is set to minimum to prevent the tone becoming too toffee like.

Cinematic tones can be many things, but for me it means a low saturation smoothness with a subtle retro tint. This recipe gives you cinemtatic tone with the classic chrome simulation, so it’s called Cinechrome.

As well as softness from reduced saturation and low contrast, this film recipe has a 5800 base temperature, with a subtle blue colour balance. This cools the image a little, giving an aged nostalgic feel to pictures without appearing too creamy. Grain is off for a clean, smooth look.

Film simulation recipe for Kodak Portra 160 looks on X-Trans 4 cameras

There’s a magical romance that surrounds Kodak Portra film, and I see photos with recipes for Portra 160, 400 or 800 about as often as anything other than Kodachrome. The film itself is beautiful, with soft warm creamy tones that are kind to faces, but also work really well in sunlight for urban, desert and nostalgia shots. Think faded Americana, and you’ve probably seen Portra.

The recipe aims to show off that creamy 160 warmth and low tonal range that makes Kodak Porta such a popular choice. I’ve kept the colour down a touch, in keeping with my perference, and taken a small grain option. It’s soft, delicate and refined.

Fuji X-Trans IV film recipe for misty and foggy weather

Of all the possible weathers, I love mist & fog the most. Whenever it is forecast, I’ll set an alarm and try and go out snapping. I wanted a recipe to capture the soft paleness of a misty day, with low saturation and flat contrast.

In trying this out, I was very pleased with the results, acheiving a pale, low contrast look with some birch trees and New Forest ponies. A bit of over exposing can help further fade out the background, and achieve an effective separation of foreground objects.

I’ve tried the recipe in some clear conditions too, and the effect is quite fun with a low saturation look. Although that’s not what I really made it for, I’ll continue to give it a try in a variety of situations.

Fujifilm classic chrome Kodak Gold film recipe for X-Trans IV cameras

My first film camera was an Olympus OM-10 and I remember shooting roll after roll of Kodak Gold film with it. I wanted this recipe to not only capture the general feel of this classic film, but also to remind me of shooting film back in the day.

So I landed on Classic Chrome settings give that give a warm cast with a fairly strong +4, -5 adjustment to daylight balance. The other settings are more subtle, keeping it simple with a small adjustment to highlights and shadows, and a little extra softness. Grain is set to strong for a filmic texture, but you can of course tone this down if you find it distracting.

We’re almost spoiled for choice as far as Kodak Ektar film recipes are concerned. There are at least four that I have seen, which of course, all produce different results (scroll to bottom for some links).

For my tastes, each of these had something I liked, but share a +4 colour setting, which I personally find too strong, and outside my preference for softer tones. So, another Kodak film recipe is born, which is still a colourful look, but is a little less saturated than others.

I enjoy shooting with it in bright conditions, bringing a punchy style that is still natural in appearance, just like Ektar photos of the past.
