Lavender Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe for shooting with a pink purple tone

    Ultraviolet Film Recipe

    Ultraviolet

Here’s a very different film recipe that helps bring a lilac mood to images. It’s quite a particular sort of look, but it can be useful if you’re looking to experiment. Perhaps you are shooting floral images, like heather, lavender or cherry blossom? Or maybe some fashion shots with a difference?

Althought this, and my other film recipes with strong characteristics might not be for general use, I like to provide options and show just how many different styles we can produce with our in camera JPEGs. I actually think you can get some great images with this, especially sunsets, or flowers in bright light, but I’ll leave it out here for you to decide if the Ultraviolet film recipe is one for you…

  • Fall Colormax, to Bring the Autumn Fire

Fall Colormax, to Bring the Autumn Fire

Rich and strong fall color film simulation recipe with Classic Negative

At the time of writing, Autumn is beginning to show, so I’ve been turning my attention to recipes for Autumn and Fall Color. Some of these feature soft golden tones and faded warmth, but we also need something with a bit of pop. If you want to max out the red and orange tones, then Fall Colormax is the recipe to use. It’s an extreme recipe, but it really does go big on fall color.

  • Deep Forest, a Mellow Woodland Look

Deep Forest, a Mellow Woodland Look

Classic Chrome film simulation recipe for deep and mellow woodland moods

    Deep Forest Film Recipe

    Deep Forest

Autumn is known as the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness (John Keats), and this is a film recipe that captures that aesthetic. Images are deep toned with a mellow colour palette that’s perfect for capturing moody woodland details.

The base film simulation is Classic Chrome, but the combination of chrome effects, strong white balance shift and a +1.5 shadow setting, give it a look all it’s own. For extra deepness (depth?), you can underexpose as well.

If you use this on a sunny day, you may get best results with that bit of underexposure. On dull or rainy days, it should deliver reliably moody images as exposed. All in all, it’s just right for Autumn when the mist and murk become more common, and through the Winter months or when weather is gloomy.

  • Zinfandel Blush, with Sunset Rosé Tones

Zinfandel Blush, with Sunset Rosé Tones

Classic Negative film simulation recipe, adding warm and soft rosé wine tones

    Zinfandel Blush Film Recipe

    Zinfandel Blush

In my experiements with white balance, I have found that you can create some wonderfully moody effects with some of the stronger settings. For shooting emotional or sentimental photography, these can help set a mood, or provide consitency across a set.

For Zinfandel Blush, the tone was that of the rosé wine, and the intention was to bring a warmth to sunsets and a glowing atmospheric mood at other times. It’s something of an extreme style, mostly useful in golden hour, but that’s also one of the wonderful things about film recipes – you can choose ones for all sorts of situations.

To build this one, I had started from another recipe, Soft Cinnamon, and switched to Classic Negative as the base simulation. I love Classic Neg for sunsets in particular, and think it delivers wonderful colours in the golden hour. That’s when ths recipe comes into it’s own, although you can use it anytime of course.

Martian styled film recipe for Fujifilm cameras using Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Life on Mars Film Recipe

    Life on Mars

When designing film recipes for Fujifilm cameras, I occasionally push the limits of the settings to see which more extreme styles can be produced. A recent recipe was Beach Baby, with a very warm shift for sunny days on the shore. With further adjustment and a switch to Eterna Bleach Bypass, an even more orange, other worldly look was created giving a style like a trip to Mars.

The main difference between the two is how colour is presented outside of golden hour. Beach Baby becomes very orange mostly around sunset, but is simply warm at other times. Life on Mars is full strength alien at all times, bringing the red planet to your photos on demand.

  • Analogico, for a Rich Golden Look

Analogico, for a Rich Golden Look

Astia film recipe with a warm golden tone for sunny days

    Analogico Film Recipe

    Analogico

One of the oldest film simulations is Astia, which I remember having on my first Fujifilm X camera, the X10. People say that it’s not quite what it used to be, but I still find it a really interesting film simulation to work with. It has a unique tone and a film like look, and is one of the most analogue looking of the available simulations.

This film recipe takes the analogue qualities of Astia and dials them up, giving a stylised interpretation that is warm and rich, and brings out any golden or yellow tones in your scene. And because some of us spell analogue as analog, I took a third path with the naming, and using Esperanto, called it Analogico, to offend everyone equally!

Olive Garden, a Tasty Tone on Cloudy Days

Pro Neg Standard film recipe for Fujifilm X-series cameras

    Olive Garden Film Recipe

    Olive Garden

With a bit of gentle nudging, the Pro Neg simulations can be tuned to have a grey-green pale olive tone, especially on cloudy days. I find this quite a pleasant and mellow tint that makes for sophisticated images, especially with the saturation also reduced and the tone curve flattened a little. It’s a cinematic look, similar to Eterna in some ways.

During development of this recipe, I found myself relishing the tone it produced and excited to see how it looked for all sorts of subjects. I found that, it produced great mellow images in overcast conditions, but also worked well in full sunshine too. Mostly though, this is one to try on cloudy days.

Film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-series with Eterna Cinema

    Ultrasoft 77 Film Recipe

    Ultrasoft 77

Soft tones photography is definitely my preferred style, and you’ll know this from the type of recipes I make on this site. For this one, I decided to see how far I could push it, and still get pleasing results. So, we have Ultrasoft 77, a warm and cosy Eterna film recipe, with the flattest possible tone curve for super soft tones.

This film recipe is useful when you want to tame harsh lighting conditions, and you can get interesting results on rainy days too. But, Ultrasoft 77 really comes into its own during the softer light of golden hour. You can achieve some very delicate results in the first and last hours of the day.

Festival Cream, for the Hazy Days of Summer

Dreamy creamy Eterna film simulation recipe for X-Trans 4 cameras

    Festival Cream Film Recipe

    Festival Cream

I am often inspired by the great work of others, and in this case, I was really taken by the tones of a recipe shared by Willard Largueza Macay. He had captured wonderful images at the Taste of Lawrence Festival, a food festival in Ontario, Canada. I loved the yellow tones and other worldly skies.

When I tested his settings, I saw a different result, perhaps because it was developed on X-T3 and there are differences between camera models. I found that adjustments were needed on my X-S10 to achieve a similar tone and feel. But, after after a few tests and some do-overs, I settled on this wonderfully creamy and atmospheric recipe that I call Festival Cream.
