    Bananarama Film Recipe

    Bananarama

I like to be surprised by the versatility of our Fujifilm cameras, and the range of styles that can be producted with film simulation recipes. We have a good selection of film simulations to explore, and with the addition or adjustments to tone, saturation and colour balance, the possibilities are almost endless. However, there are some looks that seem to come around quite often, especially when trying to keep close to a film like aesthetic, or to model a recipe on a real 35mm film stock.

For something different, we have to look to more extreme settings, or to be bold and try something unexpected. I got a taste of this on April 1st, when Ritchie from Fuji X Weekly gave us his Apocalyptic Glow film recipe. Whilst this recipe was intented to be a fun joke, the pop art style with vivid orange tones got me thinking. I wondered what other extreme settings might give a fun look that I would want to go out and shoot with?

I staked close to the 10,000K color balance, but went for yellow rather than orange in the color shift. I also wanted less saturation, so I chose Classic Chrome rather than Ritchie’s Velvia. The resulting recipe is still a more extreme look film recipe, but I think it has a place, especially around sunset or in pursuit of the Wes Anderson inspired Asteroid City vibes.

    Blue Monday, Experimental Blue Tones

Classic Negative film simulation recipe with a strong blue tone colour shift and cool colour balance

    Blue Monday Film Recipe

    Blue Monday

When designing film simulation recipes, my processes are sometime inspired by images I see, or a mood I wish to capture. Other times, I play idly in X RAW Studio, testing different settings on RAW files I have taken on recent outings. This was how I came upon the wild and crazy blue tones of this recipe.

I was testing different colour temperatures on the image of the cows in the frosty field you see below. Most film recipes with a natural or warm look have a temperature of 5500K or higher, but my experimentation led me deep into the blue zone and I settled at 4000K. Curiously, the image still had a soft of reality about it, although the grass was now very blue.

I started testing it on other images, and adjusting the other settings. The second magic power I discovered, was that this recipe was a sort of Golden Hour undo, allowing you to capture a scene in the soft hazy light of the time near sunrise or sunset, but strip away the golden tones, like it was the middle of a clear blue sky day.

I’m filing this film recipe under Extreme Styles and Recipes for Blue Tones, and although it is a novelty discoverd by idle experimentation, I quite like it, especially in bright golden light, such as with the shots below of sunlit leaves, or sunrise teasels. I hope you’ll give it a try, perhaps when you’re also feeling experiemental and want something completely different to explore.

Dramatic film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X Series cameras using Classic Negative

    All Fours Film Recipe

    All Fours

From time to time, I like to push things towards the extremes and experiment with film recipes using maximum and minimum values on the various recipe adjustments. This is the case for this strong look film recipe, based on Classic Negative, and a range of modifiers set to 4.

The result is a look that packs a lot of drama into each images, with deep shadow areas, lots of contrast and a moody deep feel. I’ve tried in a variety of weather conditions, from bright sunshine to miserable rain and stormy skies. This one loves them all!

I think you’ll get your best images when there are at least some areas of light and dark in frame, and you slightly under expose. There is a -1/3 recommendation here, but the general rule is not to try and fight the recipe and go for the deep tones mood.

As always, here are a ton of sample images from my preferred subjects in nature, but the real fun of this recipe is to get out there and try it, in sun or rain, day or night, indoors and out. Have fun!

Bold blue tone film recipe using Classic Negative and strong color chrome effects

    Glacier Blue Film Recipe

    Glacier Blue

Here’s a creative recipe with a look to maximise the blue tones in your images. It’s a film recipe that works well in winter, but just as well for big blue skies and ocean blues in summer too. I group it with my other extreme film recipe styles, because of the bold effect it generates.

To generate the bold blue look, this recipe uses Classic Negative as the base simulation, and enhaces that further with strong color chrome effects and deep shadows. Saturation is actually minimised in this recipe, but the result is still that of a deep bold glacier blue.

    Gold Leaf Film Recipe

    Gold Leaf

Here in the UK, the late autumn has finally delivered and we are blessed with mist, mushrooms and golden leaves. A lot of the trees are at peak colour right now, with beeches, sweet chestnuts and oaks all putting on a show.

Of course, it’s the UK, so it’s raining a lot too, but this past weekend saw a sunny break and so I took a lovely wander in the morning light. In the space of an hour, I took around 150 images, such was the abundance of golden subjects.

This gave me a chance to test out this recipe, Gold Leaf, which I had been saving for a morning just like this. It uses a strong warm shift colour tone and a +4 colour boost to bring back some saturation into the images.

It’s a recipe designed just for days like this, but by virtue of the strongly gold tone, it is also a great choice for a rich golden sky around sunrise and sunset too.

Brown and bronze toned fillm simulation recipe using Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Brontosaurus Film Recipe

    Brontosaurus

Here’s a Fujifilm film simuation recipe that’s full of creamy coffee toned bronze character. It uses Eterna Bleach Bypass for an impactful look, with a strong bronze tone colour shift. It has a big impact on the look of your photos, and so it needed a big name, like Brontosaurus.

By using Eterna Bleach Bypass, this recipe rules out older cameras, so if you don’t have this simulation on yours, take a look at Coffee Chrome for a similar look based on Classic Chrome.

For those of us, with Bleach Bypass, we can enjoy the deep contrast that it offers, along with the muted colour palette that allows for the single tone of the colour balance shift to add distinctive character.

The result is something quite unique, and of course, this won’t be a general use film recipe to use in all conditions. It feels a little like a colorised sepia recipe for old tone images, and I have great fun using it to capture a new look to familiar scenes. Give it a try, and I am sure you will have fun too.

Vintage pale tones with Eterna Bleach Bypass for X-Trans IV and V cameras

    Zodiac Pale Film Recipe

    Zodiac Pale

Eterna Bleach Bypass is a film simulation that divides opinion. Personally, it’s one of my favourite simulations and a great base for building recipes from. The combination of muted tone and impactful depth makes for some really interesting looks.

In Zodiac Pale, I wanted to explore the combination of pale blues and creams that give a muted look with a strong vintage tone. This style is somewhat reminiscent of early tintype colours, being both washed out and deep contrast at the same time.

I found it works at it’s best with a blue sky, or cream/neutral tones in the image. I’m sure it would be wonderful in the sun bleached American West, in gritty urban or industrial environments, or for a unique take on the beaches of a rugged coastline. Where ever you choose to shoot, Zodiac Pale will bring the mood.

    Inky Depths

It’s no secret that I love the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation and have great fun making recipes with it. I have, by happy accident, built up just about the largest selection of Bleach Bypass film recipes online.

This is my latest creation, which pulls together ideas from two other recipes, Wildwood Deep and Squid Ink, but is a look that’s all it’s own. It’s particularly exciting in the golden hour and bright conditions, making a wonderfully luxurious look with deep dark tones and highlight details.

One point to note in this recipe is the underexposure recommendation. To achieve the style, you do need to either expose for highlights, or underexpose at around -2/3 on standard metering. Embrace the dark side, and enjoy the Inky Depths.

Three Degrees, Deep Tone and Contrast

Pro Neg film simulation recipe with deep intensity for a contrasty look

    Three Degrees Film Recipe

    Three Degrees

Inspiration for my film recipes often comes as ideas after seeing the work of other creators. In this case, I was inspired by the great work of Captn Look and his moody Dune film recipe. I loved the deep intensity of this look, and it led me to explore this style with my own recipe creation.

For my deep tones recipe, I used a base of Pro Neg High, which is shifted to a warm setting. Other adjustments, which use a lot of 3s include undexposure by -2/3ev, lifted highlights to +3 and reduced saturation to -3. Clarity is reduced too for moody softness, also at -3. This last part is important to the look, so it does mean that this recipe needs a recent camera with clarity, or a bloom/mist style filter on the camera.

For the best results with Three Degrees, I’d recommend shooting in bright light, and, importantly, don’t forget to underexpose by the two stops or so to make the highlights stand out from dark backgrounds, but not be so bright as to burn out. If the highlights are burned out, underexpose some more.

Velvia film recipe for a bright summer sunshine style for fun, travel and vacations

    Spanish Summer Film Recipe

    Spanish Summer

Here’s a happy tone stylised recipe that brings a cheerful and bright summer look to your images. It’s super cosy and hazy, and it is perfect for holiday and vacation images and trips to the beach.

To achieve this bright and cheery look, I’ve chosen the Velvia film simulation as the base, and pushed the exposure with a +1 (three clicks of the wheel) over exposure recommendation. A hazy effect is added too, with -5 clarity, which you can skip if you can add a medium to strong mist/bloom filter to your lens.

Overall the image is lemon and lime toned, with lots of haze. It works especially well at the beach and in strong sunshine. I’d suggest that summer scenes and beach fun are the things to go for with this holiday recipe.
