Controversy Film Recipe with Dramatic Rich Tones

Film simulation recipe for a striking look with bold colour, deep shadows and unforgettable style.

    Controversy Film Recipe

    Controversy

There are many Fujifilm film recipes that mimic creamy film looks, but sometimes you want to experiment and push yourself with a film recipe that goes beyond the basics. Controversy is exactly that recipe. The name has two origins. The first is contre jour, shooting directly into bright light, which is where this film recipe absolutely excels. The second is Jealousy, an app-only recipe with similar bold characteristics but a distinctly greener cast. Controversy takes Jealousy’s spirit and shifts it warmer, richer and more versatile.

Built on Classic Negative, Controversy takes you away from the safely of nautral settings into a much deeper place. Highlights are lifted to +3 and shadows deepened to match, creating drama and real impact in high-contrast scenes. Point this at the sun during golden hour, into backlit foliage or against a sunset sky, and the results are striking.

There is an interesting flip side to all this. The same boosted tone curve that loves bright light also transforms gloomy conditions. On a grey, overcast day or in dark woodland, Controversy adds drama and impact where there might otherwise be none. Focus on details (like raindrops on the end of a leaf) and Controversy will transform a flat scene into something bold and atmospheric. The warm white balance shift makes colour rich, whatever the weather.

This is an experimental film recipe, and one that can be more challenging to master. It is not suited to every scene, but if you feeling adventurous, or just want to play with something more extreme, set to JPEG and see what drama you can capture, straight out of camera.

Underwood, Deep Forest Mood Film Recipe

Creative deep tones film recipe for exploring the details found in nature

    Underwood Film Recipe

    Underwood

Here’s a fresh new look at the Reala Ace film simulation, found on the newer Fujifilm X Series cameras. I have it on my X-S20 via a software update, but models like the X100VI, X-M5, X-E5 and X-T50 will have it available too.

In this recipe, I’ve explored a deeper look that keep the low contrast character of Reala Ace, but uses underexposure to dramatically change the look of the resulting photos. Blacks become a dominant feature, but with the impressive tone control of our cameras, we actually see a lot of mood and detail in the deep tones.

The colour balance here is fairly neutral, working well with forest and woodland finds, and a reduced saturation adds to the character of the resulting photos. In dull weather, the result can almost look moonlit, and I’ve come to prefer using this recipe when the weather is damp or grey.

It’s a fun recipe to experiement with, presenting your familiar favourites in a very different way. I love it for woodland walks, but I am excited to see what you make of it too. Have fun!

Lomochrome 92, Deep Contrast Muted Color

Lomochrome Color 92 film recreated with Classic Negative for Fujifilm cameras

    Lomochrome 92 Film Recipe

    Lomochrome 92

In the Film Recipes Facebook Group, we often discuss how to recreate a particular look seen elsewhere, whether that be the style of a photographer or a film from a particular manufacturer. One of our members asked recently about the unique look of Lomochrome Color 92 film, with its deep shadows and speciifc colour appearance.

When I saw the sameple images (I’ve included one here), I was compelled to try and reproduce at least a similar look for our Fujifilm cameras.

The key elements were the color tone and low saturation, the deep shadows, creamy neutrals and heavy grain. To me, this all seemed possible by working with Classic Negative as a starting point.

My process involved a lot of fiddling with settings in X RAW Studio, working with RAW files from visits to forests, beaches and, to include some people, a tennis tournament from earlier in the year. Here is my resulting film recipe, which I have been enjoying testing out in the wild, and am pleased to share here with you now.

This recipe has been available as an early releast in the Film Recipes app for the past few weeks. The app is always the best place to find all of my recipes, including many more that aren’t available anywhere else.

  • Barbour Green, Deep Mood Film Recipe

Barbour Green, Deep Mood Film Recipe

Dark green film recipe with lots of mood for gloomy and bad weather days

    Barbour Green Film Recipe

    Barbour Green

Over recent months, a lot of my focus has been directed towards completing and publishing my Film Recipes app. Apart from all the new things I have learned about apps, data and phones during this process, I’ve also had great fun adding many new recipes into the app. As I do this development, the mood of the current season is often reflected in the film recipes, and in the middle of a UK winter, gloomy conditions and bad weather have sent me in search of new looks to make the most of the weather.

One of the recipes I created is this one, which I call Barbour Green after the deep green tone that reminds me of country outdoor clothing, and as a recipe for getting out despite the weather, it seems appropriate. It’s become a personal favourite, but does come with two important notes; make sure to underexpose, and do try it in gloomy conditions, either dull weather or twilight. That’s where this recipe really comes to life.

  • Brownout, Golden Brown in Golden Hour

Brownout, Golden Brown in Golden Hour

A strongly toned brown look film recipe to give a deep and rich warmth with a nostalgic vibe

    Brownout Film Recipe

    Brownout

When I take photographs, I enjoy thinking about the mood and feel of the light and look to use film recipes to magnify this. So, if the light is soft, I use a soft look film recipe. If there is a dominant tone to a scene, I will often use a recipe that works with that, whether it’s green tones, blue tones or the cream tones of golden hour.

In this film recipe, I wanted to work with two elements; the winter tones of the trees and leaves at this time of year, and the golden light that you can enjoy in the extended winter golden hour that those of us living at northern latitudes experience in Winter. This recipe goes all out for brown, orange and golden tones, and works well in these conditions.

My preference to maximise the impact is to shoot towards the sunlight, giving strong dark shadows and golden lens flare effects. Finding leaves backlit by the sun, or interesting shapes to silhouette can be great fun with this recipe.

  • Underglow, Deep Mood in Golden Light

Underglow, Deep Mood in Golden Light

Underexposed Classic Negative film recipe for a dark tones look at sunset or sunrise

    Underglow Film Recipe

    Underglow

Over the winter months gloomy weather can dominate the days and when the sun is out, it can be low in the sky and disappear earlier in the day. Certainly in the UK we can lose it by 4pm. So, for these shorter days I’ve been experimenting with moody looks that play with darker tones and use underexposure as part of the toolkit.

I’ve been sharing some of these moody looks in the Film Recipes Facebook Group and adding them to the 500+ collection that will be part of the Film.Recipes app. This one though was so much fun that I really had to get it released to everyone as part of this site.

This recipe is a specialist, and really does need the right conditions to get the best from it. Ideally, you’ll be using the first or last moments of sunlight, and shoot into the light to have fun with silhouettes and flare. Critical to the look is also the underexposure, which can be set at least -1EV but can go further.

That said, if you have no sun to work with, you can have fun with gloomy conditions and get a deep tone moody look from shady and cloudy scenes as well. Scroll for samples and you’ll see what I mean.

Nostalgic Negative film recipe for autumn and fall colours. Works on X100VI, X-T5, X-T50, X-S20, X-H2S, X-M5

    Scorpio Film Recipe

    Scorpio

The Nostalgic Negative film simulation is one of the compelling extra looks that is present on the newer series of Fujifilm X-Series cameras. You can only find it on models such as the X100VI or X-T50, the tiny new X-M5, the X-T5, X-H2S and X-S20. The simulation has a unique look that is subtly different from the other simulations, perhaps most closely resembling Eterna when maxed out with a -4 shadow and +4 color setting.

One of the great attributes of Nostalgic Negative is the treatment of reds and oranges. There is an amber richness and magentism to them, and reds in particular can appear to jump off the page without looking too saturated. It’s this quality that I have looked to work with in the Scorpio film recipe, designed for autumn, but great for general use when a deeper tone and stand out reds are called for.

  • Ecowarrior, Packs a Punch Outdoors

    Ecowarrior, Packs a Punch Outdoors

Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe with deep contrast and nature tones

    Ecowarrior Film Recipe

    Ecowarrior

With so many film recipes available to choose between, you begin to find several that look quite similar. This deep tones look is a counter to all those soft creamy recipes designed to be a bit like Kodak Portra! Instead, this one brings a deep character, that sends shadows into inky blackness and draws attention to the highlights. I particularly enjoy using it on sunny mornings and in particulat on walks in autumn or winter woodlands.

It’s close cousin is my Vinterskog film recipe, but this one has a brown and gold, occasionally purple tone to it, where Vinterskog is more blue and green.

The base simulation for this film recipe is Eterna Bleach Bypass. I’ve discussed before how much I enjoy working with this, giving a wide range of looks, and something really quite unlike the output of any other camera brand. But, this does mean it is limited to a narrower selection of cameras. The new X100VI has it, but the popular X100V does not, for example.

If you have a camera that supports it, I really do recommend trying a number of Eterna Bleach Bypass recipes, especially in sunny conditions as autumn rolls in to the Northern hemisphere. Maybe it will become your favourite too?

  • Old Fujicolor, Aged Color Negative Recipe

Old Fujicolor, Aged Color Negative Recipe

Classic Negative film simulation recipe inspired by old Fujicolor prints

    Old Fujicolor Film Recipe

    Old Fujicolor

Our advanced digital cameras product clear clean images with astonishing detail and colour. But, when you look back at prints from decades past you find a different look, often with colours that are beginning to fade or shift and a feel that is much less like most digital camera shots.

Of course, our powerful Fujifilm cameras are not most cameras, and we can use Fujifilm film simulations to bring us closer to these nostalgic looks from the past.

For many Fujcolor print inspired looks, the wonderful Classic Negative simulation is the place to start, and to embrace the aged look, the slightly blue tone to green subjects can be played with to deliver a distinctive style. Furthermore, one stop of underexposure is used, which helps to emphasise the colour effect. Classic Negative is perhaps unique amongst the film simulations in how it changes based on exposure.

All of that is at work here, resulting in something eye catching and creative that works well with natural subjects, and especially greens. You wonder see too much natural colour from this recipe, but instead, you might unlock a new seam of creativity as you explore the look of Old Fujicolor

  • Gilt Trip, Antique Gold Tone Mono

Gilt Trip, Antique Gold Tone Mono

Acros film simulation recipe with a nostalgic pale tone for golden hour

    Gilt Trip Film Recipe

    Gilt Trip

As a photographer that enjoys the atmosphere of an image as much as the composition, I enjoy film recipes that enhance or set a mood. In this toned mono film recipe, I wanted to captured something beyond the brown of a tyipcal sepia look, and get closer to the soft look of a hazy winter morning.

I chose this pale golden look, rather than a more saturated image because I found it a lot less distracting, and having tried a variety of hues, I also felt that it found a happy spot between too sickly, and too subtle that it might not feel intentional.

With its spirit in the softness of golden hour, I find that this recipe works best with soft light and silhouettes. There’s a deep shadow tone, which will deliver good results if you also capture some brightness in the scene as well. A more flat scene may end up looking drab, so for this one, the lower the angle of the sun, the better.

A bonus creative exercise you can play with, is to pair some images taken with Gilt Trip with a recipe with a complimentary colour. I’ve added a selection at the bottom of the page, showing how this golden look can work well alongside a blue toned colour recipe for contrast.
