Based in Morocco, Mehdi Berrada is an architect and Fujifilm photographer who shoots stylish images with his X100V. His film recipe, Yakisugi has been receiving lots of positive reaction, but had no web page with the details. So, here we have the Yakisugi film recipe, by Mehdi Berrada.

Yakisugi, if you were curious, is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation that involves flame treating the outer layer. The resulting colour palette is dark and charred, and this character comes through in the muted tones of this film recipe.

How’s this for a wonderfully different film recipe? I call it Squid Ink, because of the deep inky blue of the sky, and I just love the effect it produces.

The recipe is based on Eterna Bleach Bypass film receipe, which means it’s for newer cameras only, and to get the best effect, I think it’s best to shoot in bright sunshine, but of course the fun is in finding out what this wild recipe can produce for you.

Moody film recipe for X-Trans 4, using underexposure and Eterna Bleach Bypass

I’m a big fan of Alice Tatham and her excellent Instagram page, posting under the name ‘thewildwoodmoth’. Her style has a soft faded tone, with desaturated greens and a deep tone. Inspired by this, I’ve set out to make a Fujifilm film recipe that has some of these same features.

Meet the Wildwood Deep film recipe, with a muted green tone, and lots of moody depth. It’s based on the washed out softness of Eterna Bleach Bypass, with a retro tint to warm green. It doesn’t capture all the amazing tone and colour of Alice’s work of course, but it’s sort of in the same ballpark as far as the greens are concerned.

To get the best deep mood from this film recipe, it’s good to underexpose the shots, so aim for around -2/3 compensation. It’s going to give a darker tone this way, and be nearer to the look I’ve tried to achieve.

Good subjects will include flowers, forests, pastoral scenes and aged wood or beachcombing finds. Have fun finding out!

Monochrome film recipe for Fujiflim X-Trans IV cameras

I read that the theme for May 2022’s #10YearsOfXMount challenge is mono, so what better time to release my first monochrome recipe? This recipe is colour toned with a dark chocolate hue, so it’s less toffee orange than the built in sepia simulation, but still has a definite cast to it.

I don’t shoot black and white photography very often, and I generally prefer a faded, soft tones look to my images. So this recipe tries to sit somewhere in that area, but starting with the monochrome simulation.

It’s a fun recipe to play with, giving a very different look to scenes usually taken in colour, and with the ‘R filter’ in use, it can isolate elements in an image that a colour shot wouldn’t have highlighted. I hope you’ll enjoy experimenting with it.

A Hipstamatic inspired Fujifilm recipe for X-Trans IV with Eterna Bleach Bypass

For several years, I was an avid user of Hipstamatic on iPhone. In the boom years, the arrival of new ‘paks’ was a moment of collective excitement. Learning how to use the retro inspired options to produce different styles was a community effort, and there were thousands of people sharing the results and bouncing ideas off of eachother.

The app is still going strong around a decade later, with a dedicated user base and mind boggling number of paks and features. For me though, those early days were the best.

I gave some thought to which of those Hipstamatic looks I might be able to reproduce in a film recipe. Most are impossible, but one that can be approximated is Ray Mark II with it’s warm, almost sepia tones and desaturated look. Here is my take on it.
