A versatile film recipe for Kodak Ultramax using the Astia film simulation

    Kodak Ultramax Film Recipe

    Kodak Ultramax

Whilst most of my film recipes fit into the nostalgic recipes or warm tones recipes categories, I do occasionally try to make a look that mimics the feel of a real 35mm film.

Finding a good selection of sample images is the key, and then looking to match the aesthetic with one of the available film simulations. I find that prints tend to vary quite a bit, and whilst Fujicolor ones most often look similar to Classic Negative, ones by other marques don’t, from the sample images at least, follow a set pattern. For Kodak Ultramax, I found Astia the best match, and so this is the base sim for the recipe.

    Kodak Tri-X 33

I am often inspired by photographs and recipes that others have made. This is one of those cases. The Kodak Tri-X 400 recipe on Fuji X Weekly is one of my favourite black and white recipes, with grain (which I love) and impact (which I also love). However, I am so addicted to my muted tones and colour casts, that I really wanted to adjust the recipe to add this element.

So, if you want to shoot with an unadjusted, excellent Tri-X look, jump over to Ritchie’s recipe, but if you’d like to try my tweaked version with a subtle colour tone, the details are below.

Kodak Portra film simulation recipe for Fujifillm cameras using Eterna

    Aged Kodak Portra Film Recipe

    Aged Kodak Portra

For this recipe, I was inspired by an Instagram that I follow, expiredbren who posts a really great set of images with Portra and Gold films, and sometimes expired rolls too.

In some of his recent images (June & July ’22), he’s been posting classic VWs, and I just love the tones of the images. This green Beetle is one of his IG shots, go follow him for more.

In this film recipe, I wanted to try and achieve a similar look, so I came up with an Eterna based set-up that I call, Aged Kodak Portra.

I’ve done some test shots in a variety of situations, and I think this recipe is at least similar to the wonderfully warm and faded look in Bren’s images.

Kodak Portra Daily, for Portra 160 Anytime

Classic Chrome film silmulation recipe with Kodak Portra style tones

    Kodak Portra Daily Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra Daily

I originally devised this Kodak Portra style film recipe to give a classic Portra 160 35mm look to photos taken on a trip to Wimbledon. I realised soon after that I loved shooting with it, and the recipe needed a new name to reflect its versatility. So, Kodak Portra SW19 has become Kodak Portra Daily.

Depending on which samples you look at, Kodak Portra film images have a lighter balance and either a subtle green tone, a pale pink tone or creamy tone to the highlights and neutrals. My original Kodak Portra film recipe covers the creamy look, Kodak Portra 66 covers the pinks, and this recipe covers off the greens.

It’s got quite a bit in common with other Portra recipes (there are more linked at the bottom), but for this recipe I chose an auto white balance to make it more useful in a wide range of conditions.

So here is my, ‘use anytime Kodak Portra’ for use at tennis tournaments, and everywhere else!

    Classic Gold

I like to follow groups and tags for 35mm film and analog photography. Seeing how people use old film stock is inspiring and gives me motivation to try and achieve similar looks with Fujifilm film simulation recipes.

As well as lots of Portra film, I often see Kodak Gold and especially people shooting with old rolls they find unopened for several years. Images with these were the inspiration for this recipe, using Classic Negative and a strong aged retro feel, like you see with expired or out of date film rolls.

A Classic Chrome film simulation recipe for use with Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

    Westworld Film Recipe

    Westworld

Bring yourself back online. Here’s a really useful film recipe for your trip to The Park. It has a bit of everything that’s great about Classic Chrome, with retro Kodak aesthetics, a subtly altered colour balance, and slightly muted highlights and saturation. It reminds me of the classic Kodachrome 64 look.

I’m a bit of a Westworld geek, and to mark the return of the mind bending HBO series for its 4th set of episodes, I’ve named this recipe Westworld. But, whether you enjoy watching the journey of Dolores and Bernard or not, this is a wonderful choice for all sorts of photos with a classic Kodak vibe.

    Gold Standard Film Recipe

    Gold Standard

It’s good to have a setting that you can just rely on, and know it’ll give a great result in all sorts of conditions. This recipe is based upon Pro Neg Standard, and is aimed at being a good-to-go film recipe.

The look was modelled on the Kodak Gold aesthetic, with a warmer tone and mid-saturation colours. It shares a number of settings, including the colour balance with the Kodak Gold recipe that uses Classic Chrome. This recipe is richer, with a bit more punch, reflecting the use of Pro Negative Standard.

If your memory of Kodak Gold is something from an earlier decade, you might also enjoy Kojak Gold, a nostalgic take on the Kodak Gold 200 look.

    Kodachrome Daily Film Recipe

    Kodachrome Daily

Classic Chrome is a wonderful film simulation in it’s base configuration, and with a few tweaks it can be shaped to give similar looks to the much loved Kodachrome films from the late twentieth century.

As with some of my other Kodakchrome recipes, this one is a result of iteration and experiments with the Fuji X Weekly recipes, that are rightly so popular with Fujifilm photographers.

This film recipe retains the slightly turquoise blues of Kodachrome with Classic Chrome, but is a little softer than other recipes, making it useful as a daily driver. It also uses an auto white balance, meaning it can adapt to different conditions more readily, and be tried indoors.

It’s a daily Kodachrome 64 look, with all that’s great about Classic Chrome in a single recipe.

    Kodak Portra 66 Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra 66

Some things seem to be made to go together, and in our world of film simulations and recipes, it’s Kodak Portra and fading Americana. Think of an abandoned gas station on a dusty desert highway. Creamy tones and washed out colours give a nostalgic feel. It’s the retro look of a trip along Route 66.

I haven’t been to the American West in about a decade, so I developed this recipe closer to home. I took it out and about on a city walk in Winchester and on some walks in the New Forest.

Fujifilm X-Trans 4 film recipe for a Kodak Portra 400 style

    Kodak Portra Grainy Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra Grainy

Kodak Portra film was hugely popular, and with its different versions, came to be a favourite for many 35mm photographers, each using the one they liked the best. Now, with the magic of Fujifilm film recipes, there are a selection of film recipes to help produce a look that is close to different editions of the Portra film.

I’ve been testing out a recipe for Portra 400 adapted from the Fuji X Weekly recipe by Fujifilm Film Simulations Group user Tomas Tuoma. His Kodak Portra adaptation is one that I really enjoy.

I tested it on a cloudy day, and found the colours bold and amazing, but for my preferred take on the feel of KP400, I wanted a little more grain and a little less punch. So, here we are with a couple more tweaks in this recipe and now it’s Kodak Portra Grainy.

And, since first publishing this page, I’ve shot in full summer sunshine, and added some of those photos further down the page.
