Capturing premium colour tones with Fujifilm Reala Ace Simulation

    Real Leica Film Recipe

    Real Leica

Leica cameras are a top tier product offering excellent image quality, fantastic build and design, and a reputation that is trusted by professionals the world over. Images are controlled, clean and natural, without the standout character of Fujifilm simulations. But there is a certain something to them, often found in gently pink red tones that make photos recognisably Leica.

So, for this film recipe, I wanted to capture as many of these qualities as I could, not necessarily hoping to fool observers, but to bring as much Leica character to Fuji SOOC photos as possible.

Using Reala Ace as the base simulation feels right to me, bringing the smoothness of tone and controlled, clean results. Grain is kept off and the Color Chrome effects are put to work to retain definition in coloured subjects. This allows a boost to saturation without making photos look too artificial.

This film simulation recipe for Leica colours has been available in the Film Recipes app for a little while, and I’d certainly recommend you grab a copy to get access to more recipes, including a Pro NEG Hi. Leica look and around 800 other recipe styles.

There are many ways to interpret a style, and this is my best take on a real Leica look. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

    Oxygen Film Recipe

    Oxygen

For those of us living in the Northern hemisphere, Spring is bursting out all over and teh greens of nature are filling the landscape. In my Film Recipes App, I notice that the film recipes being set as favourites are bright and colourful, ready for capturing this Spring season. Recipes like; Arboria, QE2 and Endor, as welll as several exclusive to app users.

This inspired me to get creative and develop a brand new recipe for Spring 2025, which I am sharing with you here. It is based on Reala Ace, a simulation available in newer cameras, like hte X100VI, X-M5 and X-T5. It has wonderful colour as standard, and makes a great base for a fresh air look like this.

As always, the colour balance has been tweaked, and I also made small adjustments to the tone curve. The biggest change is a nice big blast of extra colour, with a +3 saturation setting. I hope you’ll enjoy this new recipe and will find it fun to use in the Spring and Summer seasons.

My recreation of the classic look of prints made with Fujicolor Superia 400 35mm film

    Fujicolor Superia 400 Film Recipe

    Fujicolor Superia 400

As I approach the milestone of 300 film recipes added to this site, I have been looking again at some of the iconic 35mm film looks that inspired the Fujifilm film simulations. Whilst the Classic Negative simulation isn’t explicitly described as a mimic for Fujicolor Superia, there is a strong likeness, espeically to prints from Superia film dating back 20 or more years.

I’ve reviewed my earlier takes on this aesthetic, such as my original Fujicolor Superia, Fujicolor Daily and the somewhat divergent Mother Superia.

Each of these is perfectly fine for exploring this style, but each is in a way a characature of the film look, expressing one feature of another. In this take, I have tried to present a recipe that is just that is closer to reality, perhaps more subtle, and bit more usable in a wide range of conditions.

    Mountaineer, Natural Colour for Travel

Reala Ace film simulation recipe for trips and travel with X100VI, XT-5 and X-S20

    Mountaineer Film Recipe

    Mountaineer

When travel takes you to new places, it’s exciting to take photos of different scenes and in new environments. Sometimes, you can’t predict quite what you’ll find so you need a versatile film recipe with natural colour and an easy to use setting so you can capture whatever you come across with confidence.

I’ve given this recipe a try out in high mountains (where it was originally developed and gained its name), at a sporting event in very harsh light, and around the countryside and coast near where I live.

This film recipe uses the Reala Ace film simulation that is present on the newset cameras in the Fujifilm X-Series line up. This look is now the most naturally neutral of all the simulations, presenting colours with little variation from what our eyes percieve. It still has a film like feel, but is a less obviously Fujifilm look that other simulations.

I enjoy working with Reala Ace as a recipe base, especially for natural scenes and images including blue skies. Although I take few photos of people. it’s also a reliable choice for capturing faces and natural looking skin tones, which again gives it points for versatility and safety in varied situations.

  • Olympic Ace, All Round Reala Recipe

Olympic Ace, All Round Reala Recipe

The Summer Olympics are upon us, and a trip to watch the tennis event has got me inspired to prepare film recipes for capturing scenes at the event. I’ve got a number of these in the works, including the first to be added to this site, Paris 24, based on Classic Negative.

    Olympic Ace Film Recipe

    Olympic Ace

For this look, I wanted to do two things; make a great looking film recipe with the Reala Ace film simulation, and also create one that I could use just about everywhere under whatever weather and lighting situation that might arise. Reala Ace is a good choice for this because, like Provia, is has a good all round performance without a strong style of its own.

The adjustments from standard Reala Ace include a softening of the tone curve to be kinder to shadow detail and strong highlights, a DR400 setting to futher enhance this tonal flexibility, and a reduction in saturation to give a more natural overall feel. The white balance is warmed, but still retains a natural colour look.

I’ve added plenty of samples below to show the versatility of this recipe, including sunny and grey days. I will add further images from my trip to the Olympic Games in the coming weeks.

  • Barcelona, Nostalgic Negative for Trips

    Barcelona, Nostalgic Negative for Trips

A rich tones film simulation recipe designed for a trip to Spain, but useful everywhere

    Barcelona Film Recipe

    Barcelona

In our Facebook Group, I often see posts asking about film recipes for travel to different cities and countries. There are so many factors to consider, such as the light, the type of photos and your personal style. However, I’ve just returned from a trip to Barcelona where I prepared a recipe to use. I think it might work well in all sorts of places, so maybe this will be good for your travels too?

The Barcelona film recipe uses Nostalgic Negative, which is only available on X-Trans V series cameras. This simulation has a natural affinity for reds and oranges, with a warm feel and gently nostalgic look. My hope was that this would bring a versatile character to my travel photos, remaining close to natural in look, and for my specific trip to the Barcelona Open tennis tournament, rich oranges from the clay courts too.

Now that I have returned, I cna share the recipe along with a selection of the images. I am very happy with the look, which feels warm without being dominated by a strong cast, and captured the mix of dominant colours well, whilst still working for street style shots and general snapping.

  • Woodland Negative, Outdoor Classic Negative

    Woodland Negative, Outdoor Classic Negative

A Classic Negative film simulation recipe for photo walks in woodlands, forests and the great outdoors

    Woodland Negative Film Recipe

    Woodland Negative

I’ve been distracted these past couple of weeks by the arrival of my X-S20 camera. Whilst many in the Fujifilm world have been enjoying their new X100VI cameras, I’ve been having just as much fun, with this upgrade from my trusty X-S10.

The reason for explaining this, is that whilst I’ve been testing Nostalgic Negative a lot, I’ve also been revisiting the Classic Negative simulation. In comparing the two, I’ve been finding a new appreciation for the wonderful green tones and characterful colour when using Classic Negative in a natural and woodland setting. Reds also look great, and the richer colour is especially strong in gloomy or wet conditions.

In the standard Classic Negative, there is a blue tone to green areas of your photos, which is strongly reminiscent of prints from Fujicolor film, but for this look, a strong -5 blue setting steers this back towards a more natural and contemporary look. As you’ll see below, this new look is great in nature and the green spaces of a forest or woodland. If you like in a part of the world where greens are in season, then I think you’ll enjoy trying out Woodland Negative film recipe.

    Land Rover, for Outdoor Adventures

Muted tones Pro Neg Standard film simulation recipe for outdoor photography

    Land Rover Film Recipe

    Land Rover

Here’s a hard working film recipe that is flexible and natural, responding well in bright, shady and golden hour conditions. It has a soft muted tone character, which produces a sophisticated image with a film like feel.

The base for this film recipe is the Pro Neg Standard film simulation, which despite its portrait origins, is a versatile choice for a softer look in natural settings. I’ve used it a lot in outdoor themed film recipes, and with this look, I’ve found another new way to present it.

The contrast is soft with similarities to Eterna, but there is a different character to the greens and creams with this recipe. I found the colours felt similar to those you might find in English country fashions, such as you might come across at a county show or horse riding meet-up. Or, perhaps, think of agricultural greens, like you’d find on an old style Land Rover, rather than the shiny new ones.

Regardless of all that, this recipe is right at home in the countryside, in woodlands and all manner of outdoor settings. It’s a cousin to other nature friendly film recipes such as Aged Kodak Portra, Wigan Pier, Explorer’s Cinematic, or Natural Standard.

    Heartland, Nostalgic Provia Recipe

Nostalgic Provia film recipe with a natural colour tone for everyday photography

    Heartland Film Recipe

    Heartland

Here’s an interesting film recipe, based on the natural and neutral Provia simulation, but with a unique look which is nostalgic and characterful. It could almost pass a a more colourful Pro Neg, and it’s natural enough to be used in a wide range of conditions.

Much of this gently retro character comes from the use of the Fluorescent 2 colour balance option. This compensates for artificial lighting, which in turn is ‘reset’ to a more natural balance with a colour shift of +4 red and -5 blue. These in combination give a look that has a hint of warmth and red in the balance, but is still natural in appearance in daylight conditions.

The hint of red makes this vaguely reminiscent of some Kodachrome photos from the 1960s and 1970s, but it is subtle, and to me is just a welcome dose of extra character, in a way that our Fujifilm cameras do so well.

Nordic Soft, Beautiful Colour Film Recipe

Natural colour film simulation recipe with rich colour and smooth tone

    Nordic Soft Film Recipe

    Nordic Soft

The Eterna Cinema film simulation is possibly my favourite, giving a soft low contrast and cinematic feel. I love the smoothness of the tones it produces, and I’ve used it make a number of cinematic film recipes.

I often pair this with muted colours and warm colour shifts, but in this recipe, I’ve taken a different approach. I’ve chosen a natural colour balance that works well in a wide range of outdoor situations. This makes it versatile thoughout the day including golden hour, bright daylight and moody weather, such as fog or rain.

The second break with tradition is to boost the saturation, pushing this all the way to +4. The result delivers some wonderful results, with some of the nicest greens of any recipe and beautiful blues as well.

As for the name, I felt that this recipe would be a perfect parter for a trip to Norway, capturing both the moody forests and pretty red houses that dot the stunning coastline. I’ve not been of course, but for an inspirational theme, it felt like a good fit.
