    Restore from Backup

Although there seems to be a lot of negative sentiment towards it nowadays, Instagram still has some excellent photography being shared, and I find that some of the best is found on some specific hashtags. One such tag is #restorefrombackup where users submit film photos and analog styled digital.

All the film favourites are there, with monotone, Portra, faded and classic negative print styles. In my Restore from Backup film recipe, I’ve taken Classic Negative and aimed to enhance its nostalgic 35mm print look with grain, warmth and punchy shadows. Most of the impact comes of course from Fujifilm’s tremendous Classic Negative simulation, and I love how print like the results can be with these settings.

    Expired Film 66

Let’s shoot images on that film you found in a bargain store. It expired years ago, and the colours will be washed out and tinted. It’s a crazy effect, but a fun aesthetic for sunny days and a faded retro mood.

I’ve always found the unexpected results from expired film quite appealing. Tones tend to fade and images have a colour cast, either green, pink or purple. Sometimes there are light leaks and other blemishes, which all add to the character.

Although it will be something of a novelty, I wanted to make an expired film recipe to see just how crazy a straight-out-of-camera image can be. So here we have it, based on Eterna Bleach Bypass for washed out colours with a pink purple expired film tint.

I like to follow groups and tags for 35mm film and analog photography. Seeing how people use old film stock is inspiring and gives me motivation to try and achieve similar looks with Fujifilm film simulation recipes.

As well as lots of Portra film, I often see Kodak Gold and especially people shooting with old rolls they find unopened for several years. Images with these were the inspiration for this recipe, using Classic Negative and a strong aged retro feel, like you see with expired or out of date film rolls.

X-Trans IV or V film recipe based on aged Aerocolor 125 aerial film

    Kodak Aero Lomo Film Recipe

    Kodak Aero Lomo

A short while ago I was reading a discussion about a discontinued film, Aerocolor 125. it seems that there isn’t a film recipe available for this film at the moment, so I wanted to give it a try.

When googling for samples I found quite a number of olive green toned images taken in a lomography style with expired film stock. This is the look that I’ve tried to replicate in this film recipe, which I call Aerocolor Lomo.

The base colour tone is an aged yellow green using Eterna as the simulation. This tint shows up strongly in scenes with trees and other greenery. If some conditions, this can be overpowering (e.g. without other colours in the images), but when shooting a more mixed scene, the effect is closer to the examples I saw.

In December, 2022, I revisited this recipe and took some shots in a snowy country lane, and fell in love with the recipe all over again.

An old prints style recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans 4 cameras

    Decade Print Film Recipe

    Decade Print

When you rediscover photos that have been stored away for a decade or more, they have a look with faded colours and a shift towards red. This retro pink tint look is what the Decade Print film recipe is all about. Something to give images an aged look, like a found image that’s beginning to lose it’s colour.

The recipe is based upon Classic Negative and uses a +5, -3 colour shift to add the tint. Colour is reduced to the minimum possible to add the fade to the look.

If you enjoy this retro style, also try Aerocolor Lomo for an expired film look, and Expired Film 66, for a faded expired film style.
