Bleach bypass film recipe inspired by the Swedish forest photos of Catrine Sandberg

    Vinterskog Film Recipe

    Vinterskog

I really love misty moody photography, and would probably be happy if there was fog almost every morning. I love how scenery fades away and colours are obscured by the pale mist.

A photographer who make the most of these conditions is Catrine Sandberg whose magically moody images from Swedish forests I follow on Instagram.

She shoots and edits in a variety of atmospheric styles, but her blue-green toned deep images are my favourites.

This is just one example, and it is the look that I have sought to recreate with the Vinterskog film recipe.

To achieve this look, I have used Eterna Bleach Bypass, which is a truly amazing base simulation with lots of flexibility to create styles that just can’t be achieved with Classic Chrome or Negative. So, unfortunately, this recipe will be limited to those of you with the newer generations of cameras.

But … and this is a good ‘but’ … if you have an older camera, without Bleach Bypass, I have also made Vinterkrom, where I have tried to recreate this look using Classic Chrome.

    Ultraviolet

Here’s a very different film recipe that helps bring a lilac mood to images. It’s quite a particular sort of look, but it can be useful if you’re looking to experiment. Perhaps you are shooting floral images, like heather, lavender or cherry blossom? Or maybe some fashion shots with a difference?

Althought this, and my other film recipes with strong characteristics might not be for general use, I like to provide options and show just how many different styles we can produce with our in camera JPEGs. I actually think you can get some great images with this, especially sunsets, or flowers in bright light, but I’ll leave it out here for you to decide if the Ultraviolet film recipe is one for you…

Old Fossil, for Muted Natural Shots

    Old Fossil Film Recipe

    Old Fossil

I hadn’t heard this slang term for a long time, but when I overheard someone accusing their parent of being an Old Fossil recently, I was reminded of it and it stuck in my mind. I’m not so sure that this recipe reflects a fossilised look, but it is a pale tones style, based on Eterna Bleach Bypass, that would work well should I find one in a rock somewhere.

Eterna Bleach Bypass is present only on the newer cameras, and is something of a divisive look. I find it’s fun to work with, delivering muted tones with a wide choice of colour casts. In this one, I’ve kept things natural, adjusting the ‘out of the box’ balance with a WB of Fluo 3, with 3 R and -9 B.

Pale Blue Dot, Bleach Bypass for Planet Earth

Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation recipe with soft blue skies

    Pale Blue Dot Film Recipe

    Pale Blue Dot

I’ve been inspired by astronomy recently, and in particular some of the photos of Earth taken by astronauts and probes in the early days of space flight. One of interest was the Pale Blue Dot image of Earth, taken by the Voyager probe at a distance of 6 billion km.

So goes the inspiration, and now the recipe. I’m a fan of the striking style of Eterna Bleach Bypass, and realised that with adjustment, a softer look that could be used as a general recipe was possible. My first success in this area was Soft Cinnamon, and now we have Pale Blue Dot, with muted tones and eye catching pale blue skies.

Martian styled film recipe for Fujifilm cameras using Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Life on Mars Film Recipe

    Life on Mars

When designing film recipes for Fujifilm cameras, I occasionally push the limits of the settings to see which more extreme styles can be produced. A recent recipe was Beach Baby, with a very warm shift for sunny days on the shore. With further adjustment and a switch to Eterna Bleach Bypass, an even more orange, other worldly look was created giving a style like a trip to Mars.

The main difference between the two is how colour is presented outside of golden hour. Beach Baby becomes very orange mostly around sunset, but is simply warm at other times. Life on Mars is full strength alien at all times, bringing the red planet to your photos on demand.

Cinematic Cool with Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Cinematic Cool Film Recipe

    Cinematic Cool

I’m a fan of Eterna Bleach Bypass and the low saturation grungy looks it can produce. I’ve made a number of recipes using it, with various styles from cool and deep to pale and sunny. This style is intended to sit in the mid spot, with a useable tone, whilst still being unmistakably bleach bypass.

This film recipe started life as a few adjustments to the excellent Cine Matte by Ivan Cheam, but after a number of iterations, it is now a distinct style. This recipe is also like a softer version of Blanko Bleach, which is also worth a look.

Cinematic Cool is very happy in most weather conditions (see the rain shots below), with deep greens and a clever twist that makes blue skies pale and striking. It has a cinematic mood, reminiscent of some drama series and films that use deeper tones to set a cool contemporary style. I’m already looking forward to shooting with it, and I hope you’ll enjoy it too.

Diamond White, for Ice Cool Style

Blue white tone film recipe with Eterna Bleach Bypass and overexposure

    Diamond White Film Recipe

    Diamond White

The film simulation Eterna Bleach Bypass has a contrasty, low saturation look that makes it an excellent base for building highly stylised film recipes. In this one, I used a combination of over exposure, blown highlights and icy blue tones to produce a unique blue white style.

When shooting with this recipe it’s important to use overexposure, going up from +2/3 if necessary. Detail can be retained in your subject, like the fossil rock and boats below, but the overall aesthetic should be pale blue or white in most images, especially when shooting towards the sun. In fact, shooting towards the light source really helps get the look from this recipe.

    Expired Film 66 Film Recipe

    Expired Film 66

Let’s shoot images on that film you found in a bargain store. It expired years ago, and the colours will be washed out and tinted. It’s a crazy effect, but a fun aesthetic for sunny days and a faded retro mood.

I’ve always found the unexpected results from expired film quite appealing. Tones tend to fade and images have a colour cast, either green, pink or purple. Sometimes there are light leaks and other blemishes, which all add to the character.

Although it will be something of a novelty, I wanted to make an expired film recipe to see just how crazy a straight-out-of-camera image can be. So here we have it, based on Eterna Bleach Bypass for washed out colours with a pink purple expired film tint.

Fujifilm film simulation for X-Trans 4 cameras using Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Blanko Bleach Film Recipe

    Blanko Bleach

I’ve been experimenting with Eterna Bleach Bypass, trying to achieve a look that I had in mind. I’ve finally got to a point I am happy with, and I’ve called the recipe Blanko Bleach. It’s wonderfully versatile, but especially in sunny conditions and for a wide range of seascapes and landscapes.

I’ve talked before of my nostalgic fondness for the Hipstamatic app and how certain settings gave satisfying results.

One favourite was the Blanko BL4 ‘film’ that gave a low saturation drama especially to skies. I often paired it with the Ray Mk II ‘lens’, as in this example scene.

For the Fujifilm film recipe, I found it possible to achieve a similar aesthetic using the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation, and with this recipe a very usable setting that is great in all sorts of environments. The output is pale yet dramatic, with blue tones especially impactful. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so generally useful, but I’m very happy that it is.

How’s this for a wonderfully different film recipe? I call it Squid Ink, because of the deep inky blue of the sky, and I just love the effect it produces.

The recipe is based on Eterna Bleach Bypass film receipe, which means it’s for newer cameras only, and to get the best effect, I think it’s best to shoot in bright sunshine, but of course the fun is in finding out what this wild recipe can produce for you.

To get the best from this recipe, underexposure is an important step. See the recipe notes for details.
