Classic Negative film recipe for pales tones for city, landscape and nature

    Melatonin Film Recipe

    Melatonin

Here’s another wonderful guest recipe, designed by our contributor Grant Teng. You can see a number of his recipes in our user recipes section. I really love his style, capturing the tones and mood of the city with muted tones and balanced contrast.

For this recipe, Grant has used Classic Negative as the base simulation, a reduced saturation and a characterful combination of sharpening and negative clarity.

Grant says, “It’s a Classic Neg recipe for a dreamy urban look. Love it for neutral tones, but can produce some interesting muted-color results too. This probably requires a diffusion filter of some sort, but -5 clarity might work too (or you could combine both). It also turns into a nice clean street look once you pull out the filter.”

Grant shoots in Manila, capturing scenes from this busy city. On this occasion, I’ve added some of my own shots in the bottom section of the page, so you can see how the recipe looks out of the city too.

    Grant’s images were taken with an XT4, 23F2, and a 1/4 K&F diffusion filter.

A Clasic Negative film recipe for winter time, created by Tobias Gruber

    Winter Magic Film Recipe

    Winter Magic

Here’s a wonderful guest recipe, devised by Tobias Gruber, a member of our photographer community on the Film Recipes Facebook Group.

He took a trip into the snowy forests, with his X-S10 camera, equiped with a Fujinon 23mm f1.4 lens. The film recipe used was such a success, that Tobias shared the results in the group and named it Winter Magic.

I’m so pleased to be able to share this with you here, along with a selection of Tobias’ photos that show off the winter friendly aesthetic of his recipe. I love the balance of Classic Negative tones with a neutrality that doesn’t overpower the scene. I know that you’ll love it too.

Afternoon Delight, When it’s Right, it’s Right

Everything’s a little clearer in the light of day, an afternoon film recipe

    Afternoon Delight Film Recipe

    Afternoon Delight

I was rewatching Anchorman for the umpteenth time, and I was reminded that I’d not yet written up my recipe page for Afternoon Delight. I’d made this Classic Negative recipe back in the early summer, looking for a great partner in the long afternoons and evenings.

I have several warm Classic Negative film recipes already, and for this one, I wanted a natural balance for maximum flexibility. Something unique, but not as warm as Goldeneye or as rich as Grizzly Bear.

It’s a very usable recipe, working well in sunny or cloudy conditions, and in the golden hour. So, despite it’s summer origins, it’s an all-year recipe.

It’s also the fourth in my occasional series of recipes named like song titles, joining Ruby Tuesday, Parklife and Karmachroma.

  • Dreamland, Warm and Cosy Like a Dream

Dreamland, Warm and Cosy Like a Dream

Warm and hazy film recipe for a dream like look with strong colour

    Dreamland Film Recipe

    Dreamland

Here’s a film recipe with a feel good factor. The Dreamland film recipe brings a rich and warm tone to your images with a hazy softness like a remembered dream. It’s one of my more extreme film recipes with a high saturation and bold look.

At the heart of the look is Classic Negative, which is set at 5,500k with a 5, -5 additional shift into toasty warm territory. The softness comes from negative clarity, which you can also achieve with a cinebloom or mist filter.

This recipe prefers bright light or golden hour, giving somewhat treacle tones in dull conditions. However, if you like that, then consider it a bonus!

Fujicolor Daily, a Classic Negative All Rounder

The Classic Negative film simulation brings a nostalgic film print look to our cameras that is reminiscent of Fujicolor prints, especially from 10+ years ago. Using the simulation with no adjustments is great, but there are also lots of possibilities as a recipe with adjustments to other settings.

    Fujicolor Daily

For Fujicolor Daily, I wanted to take an approach that brought out the feel of the Fujicolor film, whilst keeping a look that was as versatile as possible for daily use.

This recipe joins other ‘daily’ recipes, Kodak Portra Daily and Kodachrome Daily which are also versatile and highly usable.

Parklife, Cosy with just a little Blur

Classic Negative film simulation film recipe, with warm shift and boosted colour

    Parklife Film Recipe

    Parklife

I put my trousers on, have a cup of tea, and I think about leaving the house. Here’s the third in the occasional series of film recipes with names based on song titles. First we had Karmachroma, then Ruby Tuesday, and now we have Parklife. This recipe has boosted colour and a haze from clarity to give a warm cosy look for sunny days in the park and elsewhere.

The recipe is great in the sun, and even better around golden hour. It’ll no doubt be a good partner in what’s left of the Autumn season, with Classic Negative loving reds and oranges in the fall color. And, for our friends in tropical lands or the Southern Hemisphere, a great recipe for you too.

King Negative, Bold and Colourful Recipe

Rich colours film simulation recipe using Classic Negative for X-Trans IV cameras

    King Negative Film Recipe

    King Negative

Here’s a film recipe that shows why it’s good to experiment, and why it’s great when photographers take a recipe and make changes to suit their style.

You see, I published the QE2 film recipe on Sept, 8th using Classic Chrome as a base. Fujifilm user Tuvshinbayar Davaa took this on a trip to Marlburg in Germany, and because of gloomy conditions, swapped to Classic Negative.

So here we have a descendent of QE2, which I have named King negative, following the line of succession. I just love how rich and vibrant the recipe is, and I’m sure I wouldn’t have tried this switch myself. We can all be thankful to Tuvshinbayar Davaa for the idea.

Tropicana, a Vibrant and Zesty Classic Neg

Bright, cheerful film recipe with punchy colour from Classic Negative

    Tropicana Film Recipe

    Tropicana

Tropicana is different things to different people. For some, it’s a fruit juice, whilst others remember the pop song by Wham! or a rather tasty Welsh beer. In my early childhood, it was an open air lido swimming pool where I learned to swim. That place was left empty for many years, before hosting art installations like Dismaland and more recently the See Monster.

But now, and obviously most excitingly, it’s a bright, cheery film recipe to bring bouncy colour to your photography. This recipe will be a good friend when you want to give a rich and colourful look to a scene, but without using overly obvious boosts to colour. The Classic Negative simulation provides the base style, with a +2 color, +1 shadow paired with 2 stops of over exposure delivering punch to your pictures. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Fall Colormax, to Bring the Autumn Fire

Rich and strong fall color film simulation recipe with Classic Negative

At the time of writing, Autumn is beginning to show, so I’ve been turning my attention to recipes for Autumn and Fall Color. Some of these feature soft golden tones and faded warmth, but we also need something with a bit of pop. If you want to max out the red and orange tones, then Fall Colormax is the recipe to use. It’s an extreme recipe, but it really does go big on fall color.

Grizzly Bear, a Recipe with Big Presence

Punchy colours and strong grain in this classic negative film recipe

    Grizzly Bear Film Recipe

    Grizzly Bear

Sometimes, you want your photos to have impact, with punchy colours, deep shadows and character from grain. This recipe has been designed around those three features, and with such a big personality, is called Grizzly Bear.

The base film simulation is Classic Negative, with a strong grain and a positve clarity setting. This adds to the dramatic feel of the images, but does mean it may be a little slower to render and save the images. It’s all part of the look however, so that when you want a punchy slide-like result, you can ‘bring out the bear’!
