Monochrome film recipe based on the work of Daido Moriyama

    Daido Moriyama Film Recipe

    Daido Moriyama

I’ve been exploring the work of some black and white photographers, looking for inspiration about film recipes. A well known artist from Japan is Daido Moriyama, who shoots a striking black and white style.

In a number of his images, I notice deep blacks, burned highlights and the mid tones crushed to a narrower dynamic range. He also tends to use heavy grain. This is the style I have looked to reproduce in this film recipe.

The main settings in this recipe are the -2 highlights, paired with +4 shadows and strong grain. This is combined with a strong positive clarity setting, which will slow down saving, but is a part of the overall effect. Leave this on if you can tolerate the delays in saving. There’s also a gentle toning, which is in keeping with many of his images.

    Soft Acros Film Recipe

    Soft Acros

If you enjoy soft tones in your colour photography and want to continue your style into mono, then Soft Acros is for you. With a forgiving tone curve and gentle grain, this is a soft and sophisticated mono recipe for a calm style of monochrome photography.

In this recipe, shadows are lifted to keep the overall quality of the image soft, and to preserve shadow details. You’ll also notice the hint of a tone to the images, with the WC setting used to give a subtle newsprint look.

  • Kodachrome Mono, Versatile Black & White

Kodachrome Mono, Versatile Black & White

What if Kodak had a black and white film as part of the Kodachrome family?

    Kodachrome Mono Film Recipe

    Kodachrome Mono

In my experiments with monotone film recipes, I thought to myself … what if Kodak had stuck with early plans for Kodachrome to be a mono film? It would have a different look to Tri-X and would capture the full range of tones, being versatile, and a specific interest for me, excellent for landscape photography.

So, after a late night editing session in X RAW Studio, I settled on this film recipe to give us a this Kodachrome Mono option.

The main feature of this recipe is the soft tone curve, with a generally brighter overall image, preserving lots of shadow detail. This makes it versatile for everyday photography, without the deep impactful shadows that can sometimes limit a mono recipe for day to day use.

  • Black Friday, Mono with Moody Mid Tones

Black Friday, Mono with Moody Mid Tones

Grainy monotone film recipe using the Acros film simulation

    Black Friday Film Recipe

    Black Friday

I’m nothing if not topical, releasing this grainy and characterful mono recipe on Black Friday. Yes, it’s available free, with nothing to pay now or later 🙂

The base for this recipe is is the Acros film simulation, which is one of the best mono recipes straight out of the box. In my tweaking, I’ve added lashings of grain, and pushed the dynamic range with stronger highlights and deeper shadow. Burnout is limited with a -1/3 underexposure suggestion. Oh, and because it’s me, I’ve added just a small mono colour shift, with one click towards warm.

  • Mono Moonlight, Faking a Full Moon Effect

Mono Moonlight, Faking a Full Moon Effect

Full moon film simulation recipe with a moonlight blue colour tone

    Mono Moonlight Film Recipe

    Mono Moonlight

Here’s a film recipe that I created as a bit of an experiement, simply to see whether I could fake nighttime during the day. It’s a monotone recipe with a fairly strong blue tone, and the effect works best in bright light with bold highlights and deep shadows. Of course, you can use it at night as well, where the tone gives a moonlight feel.

Monographic, Acros Mono for Everyday Use

An Acros film simulation recipe with a bright look for every day use

    Monographic Film Recipe

    Monographic

Our Fujifilm cameras come loaded with excellent mono film simulations, including Acros that mimics black and white film stock. Just like the colour simulations, you can also adjust the mono simulations with a variety of options to achieve different looks.

For this recipe, called Monographic, I wanted a recipe that was characterful, but also forgiving in everyday situations. Some recipes give a dark image that can lose the essence of day to day scenes. This one, loves to show off the light with lifted mid-tones, whilst still delivering impactful but balanced shadow.

Silver toned mono film recipe using the Acros film simulation

    Silvertone 99 Film Recipe

    Silvertone 99

This little film recipe site keeps on growing, and this is film recipe 99 in the collection. As you can see, it’s a mono recipe, which has an impactful look with dark shadows and the smooth tones of the Acros film simulation.

I find this recipe is great for photographing details, and it loves high contrast lighting like early morning sunlight, or photos taken towards the sun or light source. LIike my other mono film recipes, it has a colour tone, but this one is a subtle silvery blue tone which adds some character without being overpowering.

Atarangi – shade, shadow. Here’s a mono film simulation with strong grain and deep shadows from underexposure. It produces very moody images, which also have a subtlety to them with a soft tone curve.

As with all of my mono recipes, there is a color tint giving grey-brown tones for a retro nostalgic look, but you can skip this if you prefer a pure mono image.

  • Wilford HG, Mono with Heavy Grain

Wilford HG, Mono with Heavy Grain

Gritty and grainy mono recipe based on an Ilford film simulation style

    Wilford HG Film Recipe

    Wilford HG

This mono toned film simulation recipe was based in part upon the Ilford HP5 film recipe from Fuji X Weekly. It was tested and then manipulated a few times over as I looked for an impactful gainy look. Because it ‘was Ilford’, I named it Wilford in my mind, and now that name has stuck.

As well as Ilford underpinnings, this mono film recipe has a heavy grain (HG), punchy highlights and deep shadows. I also added a strong positve clarity, to further enhance the gritty grainy look. And, as always, there’s a hint of colour, with a mono tone shift, which you can skip if you prefer a pure black and white look.

    Claunch 72, Monotone Hipstamagic

Deep toned monochrome Fujifilm film recipe with a brown colour shift

    Claunch 72 Film Recipe

    Claunch 72

If you’ve every experiemented with the Hipstamatic app, you may have come across the characterful mono setting called Claunch72. It has a tinted mono look, with dark border and vignetting.

One of my favourite IG follows is Woody95 who makes excellent use of this setting in his Hipstamatic photography in Scotland.

Personally, I love the style and wanted to try and capture the essence of it in a film recipe. Using an X-Trans IV camera makes this possible with colour tone applied to a mono image.

My interpretation of this look includes a colour shift that is perhaps a little less green than the Hipstamatic original, and of course, is missing the border and vignetting. However, as I’ve used this film recipe more and more, I’ve come to really enjoy its toned mono style.
