Classic Negative film simulation recipe for a muted Fujicolor look

    Nostalgic Fujicolor Film Recipe

    Nostalgic Fujicolor

Here’s a film recipe that uses the Classic Negative film simulation to give a versatile recipe for use in a wide variety of settings. It has a look that reminds me of Fujicolor film photos, thanks to the wonderfully retro tones of Classic Negative.

Characteristics of this film recipe are softened highlights, a warm colour balance and reduced saturation. It means that the overall recipe is quite subtle, producing mellow, film-like images without overpowering colour.

Alchemy Cinematic, for Urban Soft Tones

Eterna film simulation recipe with urban cool tones for Fujiflim cameras

    Alchemy Cinematic Film Recipe

    Alchemy Cinematic

The Eterna Cinema film simulation is a wonderful choice for soft tones photography, but the green-brown tone of the base simulation doesn’t always give me the mood effect that I’m after. For something a little cooler, perhaps metallic even, I like to make adjustments.

So, for explorations in suburbia, industry parks or for a cool tone to street photography, we have Alchemy Cinematic. This recipe turns gold into steel (in colour tones at least) and works really well with stone and metal. I find it a good choice to bringing smooth metallic tones to city exploration photo walks.

  • Wilford HG, Mono with Heavy Grain

Wilford HG, Mono with Heavy Grain

Gritty and grainy mono recipe based on an Ilford film simulation style

    Wilford HG Film Recipe

    Wilford HG

This mono toned film simulation recipe was based in part upon the Ilford HP5 film recipe from Fuji X Weekly. It was tested and then manipulated a few times over as I looked for an impactful gainy look. Because it ‘was Ilford’, I named it Wilford in my mind, and now that name has stuck.

As well as Ilford underpinnings, this mono film recipe has a heavy grain (HG), punchy highlights and deep shadows. I also added a strong positve clarity, to further enhance the gritty grainy look. And, as always, there’s a hint of colour, with a mono tone shift, which you can skip if you prefer a pure black and white look.

Vintage Mood, for a Nostalgic Soft Look

Eterna based film simulation recipe for a retro look with Fujifilm cameras

    Vintage Mood Film Recipe

    Vintage Mood

There are quite a variety of nostalgic film recipes on this site, with different takes on what a ‘vintage look’ is. Almost all of them do share a warm colour balance, sometimes slight, but often quite strong. This recipe has a balance shift on the very warm side, but with Eterna as a base, the result is a distinctly retro looking tone.

As well as this retro colour shift, there is light grain, boosted shadows and highlights and softness from a negative sharpness and negative clarity setting. The end result is noticably different to Eterna Nostalgia, a similarly themed Eterna recipe, but both of them have a nostalgic vibe of different types.

  • P45, Warm Tones Provia Simulation

    P45, Warm Tones Provia Simulation

Provia based film recipe with warm tones and natural contrast.

    P45 Film Recipe

    P45

The Provia simulation is the most neutral of the film simulations on a Fujifilm camera, with natural colour and contrast. This film recipe works with this neutrality, adding just a few extra elements. This is a recipe for working with the conditions, rather than trying to transform them into something else.

The main change is to warm up the colour balance, with a +4, -5 shift, giving the 45 in the recipe name. Otherwise, colour is gently softened with a -2 colour setting, and all other changes are small tweaks. This leaves the recipe very usable in a wide range of conditions, but still bringing a little soft tone warmth to your photos.

The only setting in the recipe that isn’t compatible with older cameras is a weak amount of color chrome blue, which you can skip on older sensors for almost the same look.

  • Cinematic Cool with Eterna Bleach Bypass

Cinematic Cool with Eterna Bleach Bypass

Cool toned film recipe for Fujifillm X-Trans IV cameras with EBB.

    Cinematic Cool Film Recipe

    Cinematic Cool

I’m a fan of Eterna Bleach Bypass and the low saturation grungy looks it can produce. I’ve made a number of recipes using it, with various styles from cool and deep to pale and sunny. This style is intended to sit in the mid spot, with a useable tone, whilst still being unmistakably bleach bypass.

This film recipe started life as a few adjustments to the excellent Cine Matte by Ivan Cheam, but after a number of iterations, it is now a distinct style. This recipe is also like a softer version of Blanko Bleach, which is also worth a look.

Cinematic Cool is very happy in most weather conditions (see the rain shots below), with deep greens and a clever twist that makes blue skies pale and striking. It has a cinematic mood, reminiscent of some drama series and films that use deeper tones to set a cool contemporary style. I’m already looking forward to shooting with it, and I hope you’ll enjoy it too.

  • Claunch 72, Monotone Hipstamagic

    Claunch 72, Monotone Hipstamagic

Deep toned monochrome Fujifilm film recipe with a brown colour shift

    Claunch 72 Film Recipe

    Claunch 72

If you’ve every experiemented with the Hipstamatic app, you may have come across the characterful mono setting called Claunch72. It has a tinted mono look, with dark border and vignetting.

One of my favourite IG follows is Woody95 who makes excellent use of this setting in his Hipstamatic photography in Scotland.

Personally, I love the style and wanted to try and capture the essence of it in a film recipe. Using an X-Trans IV camera makes this possible with colour tone applied to a mono image.

My interpretation of this look includes a colour shift that is perhaps a little less green than the Hipstamatic original, and of course, is missing the border and vignetting. However, as I’ve used this film recipe more and more, I’ve come to really enjoy its toned mono style.

X100v Classic Negative film recipe for beautiful blues and whites

    Pastel Vibes Film Recipe

    Pastel Vibes

The beautiful Greek island of Santorini is a photography paradise, with its characteristic white and blue buildings and far reaching ocean views. This colour palette has been masterfully captured by Willow Rotter on his X100V using his film recipe, Pastel Vibes.

Willow’s photographic style is towards ‘high key’ with images typically over exposed by +1. In this recipe, a -2 setting for highlights helps to preserve detail and give a wonderfully bright and airy image. He also says, that if you want the highlights to be a little red use R: 0, rather than R: -1. Some of the photos was R: 0 & some are R: -1.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe for trips and travel with a Fujifilm camera

    Travel Negative Film Recipe

    Travel Negative

When taking a trip away, it’s great ot have a couple of general use film recipes that allow you to capture memories of a wde variety of scenes.

For quite some time, I’ve enjoyed Nomadic Mood, by Ivan Cheam, but I sometimes find it a bit too dark. Starting from his settings, I made this Classic Negative recipe to be bright and clean, with a warm colour tone, punchy shadows and lovely blues in the sky.
