Stylish pinky bronze toned film simulation recipe for Fujifilm cameras

    Cherry Cola Film Recipe

    Cherry Cola

Here’s a tasty new style that brings a unique feel to your images. The Cherry Cola film recipe has a pink brown aesthetic that in some ways feels like an aged nostalgic look, but in others is a warm but unique look for characterful imaging. It’s for brave photographers looking to experiment, or to bring a strong look across a series of photos.

The base for this recipe is my ‘go to’ for unique styles, Eterna Bleach Bypass, which is pushed into new creative territory with unique color tone from Fluorescent 1 balance with a heart shift of +8 red and -5 blue.

There’s no escape for any colour or subject in scenes with this. They will all yield and get bathed in the pinky bronze tone. It’s a recipe to go large with and embrace the results.

This recipe works well on any camera that has the Bleach Bypass film sim, such as X-T4, X100VI or X-S20. If you want to explore a similar aesthetic, but don’t have Eterna Bleach Bypass, you might enjoy the Seventies Summer film recipe, or Sherbert Sunrise look, which both explore a pink toned style.

Here are my samples, taken with, or edited from RAWs on my X-S20 in the past few months.

Silent Era, 1920s Monochrome Film Recipe

Old tone monochrome film recipe like images from the early days of photography

    Silent Era Film Recipe

    Silent Era

For this toned monochromatic film recipe, I’m revisiting an aesthetic I’ve explored before, but feel that with this new look, there’s a bit more to add.

The look is based on images from around a century ago, in the silent era of film and a time of photography pioneers. Styles at this time featured no colour of course, and in print, often had brown tones from the development process.

Brown and sepia tones are sometimes divisive, and I certainly come and go from loving them. But, I also know that for certain subjects and conditions they look great. Especially if the subject can be translated to a time period when this sort of photography was the norm.

This recipe contains three main elements to achieve the look; heavy grain, a mono colour tone shift and the maximum setting for negative clarity. Together these produce the vintage images, and where depth of field gives softness in the background, a feel similar to early tintype images where the subject can seem to jump off the page.

My tip for the use of this film recipe, is to look to capture images with some imperfections. Don’t worry about some areas being out of focus, or everything being sharp. Softness and and blur are all good company for this recipe. I have had good fun using it with macro extender rings for example, which get you in close, but distort the areas out of focus.

  • Gilt Trip, Antique Gold Tone Mono

Gilt Trip, Antique Gold Tone Mono

Acros film simulation recipe with a nostalgic pale tone for golden hour

    Gilt Trip Film Recipe

    Gilt Trip

As a photographer that enjoys the atmosphere of an image as much as the composition, I enjoy film recipes that enhance or set a mood. In this toned mono film recipe, I wanted to captured something beyond the brown of a tyipcal sepia look, and get closer to the soft look of a hazy winter morning.

I chose this pale golden look, rather than a more saturated image because I found it a lot less distracting, and having tried a variety of hues, I also felt that it found a happy spot between too sickly, and too subtle that it might not feel intentional.

With its spirit in the softness of golden hour, I find that this recipe works best with soft light and silhouettes. There’s a deep shadow tone, which will deliver good results if you also capture some brightness in the scene as well. A more flat scene may end up looking drab, so for this one, the lower the angle of the sun, the better.

A bonus creative exercise you can play with, is to pair some images taken with Gilt Trip with a recipe with a complimentary colour. I’ve added a selection at the bottom of the page, showing how this golden look can work well alongside a blue toned colour recipe for contrast.

    Brontosaurus, Bold Bronze Bleach Bypass

Brown and bronze toned fillm simulation recipe using Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Brontosaurus Film Recipe

    Brontosaurus

Here’s a Fujifilm film simuation recipe that’s full of creamy coffee toned bronze character. It uses Eterna Bleach Bypass for an impactful look, with a strong bronze tone colour shift. It has a big impact on the look of your photos, and so it needed a big name, like Brontosaurus.

By using Eterna Bleach Bypass, this recipe rules out older cameras, so if you don’t have this simulation on yours, take a look at Coffee Chrome for a similar look based on Classic Chrome.

For those of us, with Bleach Bypass, we can enjoy the deep contrast that it offers, along with the muted colour palette that allows for the single tone of the colour balance shift to add distinctive character.

The result is something quite unique, and of course, this won’t be a general use film recipe to use in all conditions. It feels a little like a colorised sepia recipe for old tone images, and I have great fun using it to capture a new look to familiar scenes. Give it a try, and I am sure you will have fun too.

Deep toned monochrome Fujifilm film recipe with a brown colour shift

    Claunch 72 Film Recipe

    Claunch 72

If you’ve every experiemented with the Hipstamatic app, you may have come across the characterful mono setting called Claunch72. It has a tinted mono look, with dark border and vignetting.

One of my favourite IG follows is Woody95 who makes excellent use of this setting in his Hipstamatic photography in Scotland.

Personally, I love the style and wanted to try and capture the essence of it in a film recipe. Using an X-Trans IV camera makes this possible with colour tone applied to a mono image.

My interpretation of this look includes a colour shift that is perhaps a little less green than the Hipstamatic original, and of course, is missing the border and vignetting. However, as I’ve used this film recipe more and more, I’ve come to really enjoy its toned mono style.

  • Chocolate Mono for Dark Cocoa Tones

Chocolate Mono for Dark Cocoa Tones

Monochrome film recipe for Fujiflim X-Trans IV cameras

    Chocolate Mono Film Recipe

    Chocolate Mono

I read that the theme for May 2022’s #10YearsOfXMount challenge is mono, so what better time to release my first monochrome recipe? This recipe is colour toned with a dark chocolate hue, so it’s less toffee orange than the built in sepia simulation, but still has a definite cast to it.

I don’t shoot black and white photography very often, and I generally prefer a faded, soft tones look to my images. So this recipe tries to sit somewhere in that area, but starting with the monochrome simulation.

It’s a fun recipe to play with, giving a very different look to scenes usually taken in colour, and with the ‘R filter’ in use, it can isolate elements in an image that a colour shot wouldn’t have highlighted. I hope you’ll enjoy experimenting with it.

Compare this to Bromide Mono, for a similar style, or for a different mono look, try Cyanotype film recipe.

Here’s a Fuji camera film recipe for X-series that captures a coffee brown colour tone, to add a sophisticated warmth in a low saturation image. It works well in the golden hour, turning it into the cafe latte hour.

The colour shift is quite strong in this film recipe, shifting Classic Chrome with a colour temp of 8100k plus a +1, +5 adjustment. Shadows are deep with a +2 setting, and saturation is set to minimum to prevent the tone becoming too toffee like.
