Film simulation for old Kodak Gold 35mm for Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

I like to follow groups and tags for 35mm film and analog photography. Seeing how people use old film stock is inspiring and gives me motivation to try and achieve similar looks with Fujifilm film simulation recipes.

As well as lots of Portra film, I often see Kodak Gold and especially people shooting with old rolls they find unopened for several years. Images with these were the inspiration for this recipe, using Classic Negative and a strong aged retro feel, like you see with expired or out of date film rolls.

Fujifilm X-Trans IV film simulation recipe using Eterna for mellow soft tones

The Eterna Cinema film simulation is one of my favourites, with a mellow softness that oozes cinematic character. I love the slightly green brown tint to it as well, and for this recipe, I embrace these mellow tones and make a feature of the softness.

I named this film recipe Arthouse Cinema as a reflection of the creative tones and wonderful B-roll seen in independent films. It’s got a look that’s very easy to imagine in such situations and has quickly become a regular choice in my photography. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

Fujifilm film simulation for X-Trans 4 cameras using Eterna Bleach Bypass

I’ve been experimenting with Eterna Bleach Bypass, trying to achieve a look that I had in mind. I’ve finally got to a point I am happy with, and I’ve called the recipe Blanko Bleach. It’s wonderfully versatile, but especially in sunny conditions and for a wide range of seascapes and landscapes.

I’ve talked before of my nostalgic fondness for the Hipstamatic app and how certain settings gave satisfying results.

One favourite was the Blanko BL4 ‘film’ that gave a low saturation drama especially to skies. I often paired it with the Ray Mk II ‘lens’, as in this example scene.

For the Fujifilm film recipe, I found it possible to achieve a similar aesthetic using the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation, and with this recipe a very usable setting that is great in all sorts of environments. The output is pale yet dramatic, with blue tones especially impactful. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so generally useful, but I’m very happy that it is.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans 4 in Golden Hour

Some of the best light for taking photographs is found during the golden hour around sunrise and sunset. The softness of the light, coupled with the longer shadows and warmer hues, make taking beautiful photos a lot easier.

Photographer Kebs Cayabyab, has developed some recipes on his YouTube channel, including a wonderfully warm Provia recipe called Dela Rosa (2nd recipe in the clip) that he uses in his late afternoon street photography.

I’ve enjoyed his recipe, and in experimenting with it, developed a variant that uses Classic Negative with a couple of stops of overexposure. I call this version Rosa Negative, and like Keb’s original, it’s wonderful in golden hour.

Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe with a soft nostalgic look

Here’s a recipe that’s really tasty! It’s a soft and mellow film recipe, based on the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation. It has a warm cinnamon colour shift, and with reduced contrast and a little softness, it’s not at all overpowering. In fact, it’s a gentle recipe with a subtle cinnamon tone to the neutrals. Delicious!

Over time, I find myself coming back to this recipe again and again, and I am always impressed with how it renders all sorts of conditions from mid summer to the winter snow. It’s one of my personal favourites. You can see more of them on the Shortlist of Favourite Recipes.

X-Trans IV film simulation recipe with moody Eterna tones

When you stream the latest shows, do you notice when they have a moody colour tone? We watched a legal crime drama show recently and there was a distinct cool vibe to the picture, which I thought would be fun to try and make in a film recipe.

Here’s my Cinematone film recipe, based on the Eterna Cinema film simulation. I’ve set a cooler tone with a -1, -2 colour shift and kept things muted but useable with the other settings.

I think this might take some amazing city photos and street life shots, and it can work in any weather. It’s another great example of how flexible Fujifilm film simulations are, giving a moody feel to all sorts of scenes, including my snaps of our local area.

It’s a different look to my other cinematic recipes, Cinemachrome and Arthouse Cinema, although there are some similarities. Whichever you choose, have fun shooting in a cool movie show style.

For a trip back well over 50 years, this nostalgic film recipe makes use of the Eterna Bleach Bypass recipe. It’s great in hazy light or weak sunlight, which it can accentuate with it’s mellow pale tones.

Creams and soft mossy greens are the main characteristics of this recipe, which means it can work well on old buildings or pastoral scenes. Don’t be shy of negative space with the Fading Memory recipe. A pale creamy sky is all part of the aesthetic with this film recipe.

Moody film recipe for X-Trans 4, using underexposure and Eterna Bleach Bypass

I’m a big fan of Alice Tatham and her excellent Instagram page, posting under the name ‘thewildwoodmoth’. Her style has a soft faded tone, with desaturated greens and a deep tone. Inspired by this, I’ve set out to make a Fujifilm film recipe that has some of these same features.

Meet the Wildwood Deep film recipe, with a muted green tone, and lots of moody depth. It’s based on the washed out softness of Eterna Bleach Bypass, with a retro tint to warm green. It doesn’t capture all the amazing tone and colour of Alice’s work of course, but it’s sort of in the same ballpark as far as the greens are concerned.

To get the best deep mood from this film recipe, it’s good to underexpose the shots, so aim for around -2/3 compensation. It’s going to give a darker tone this way, and be nearer to the look I’ve tried to achieve.

Good subjects will include flowers, forests, pastoral scenes and aged wood or beachcombing finds. Have fun finding out!

Faded neutrals and earth tones are a staple of the lifestyle photography style. Pale room interiors with strategically placed rustic items, some white flowers, or maybe a leather jacket or summer hat. This style is the target with the Lifestyle Negative film recipe.

I was asked by a reader to see if a recipe might come close to the look of the lifestyle imagery of Abbie Mellé who produces lovely images in this style. Whilst those shots weren’t on Fujifilm, there’s a similarity with Classic Negative in several of the shots I examined, so I’ve given it a go.

Fujifilm’s Classic Negative film simulation has a distinct character, bringing the feel of negative film prints, especially Fujicolor ones. People talk about the greens, the reds, and the remarkable similarity to negative print style. When you see a classic negative shot, you can recognise it right away.

The Pale Negative film recipe looks to work with these remarkable tones, but with a softer look, especially in terms of a reduced saturation and a soft tone curve. It dials everything down a touch, keeping the classic negative character, just slightly less so. If you want to shoot classic neg, but have been put off by it’s strong character, try this.
