Creative deep tones film recipe for exploring the details found in nature

Here’s a fresh new look at the Reala Ace film simulation, found on the newer Fujifilm X Series cameras. I have it on my X-S20 via a software update, but models like the X100VI, X-M5, X-E5 and X-T50 will have it available too.

In this recipe, I’ve explored a deeper look that keep the low contrast character of Reala Ace, but uses underexposure to dramatically change the look of the resulting photos. Blacks become a dominant feature, but with the impressive tone control of our cameras, we actually see a lot of mood and detail in the deep tones.

The colour balance here is fairly neutral, working well with forest and woodland finds, and a reduced saturation adds to the character of the resulting photos. In dull weather, the result can almost look moonlit, and I’ve come to prefer using this recipe when the weather is damp or grey.

It’s a fun recipe to experiement with, presenting your familiar favourites in a very different way. I love it for woodland walks, but I am excited to see what you make of it too. Have fun!

Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation recipe that enhances blues, creams and browns

In preparation for the changing seasons been working on some more film recipe looks for winter, and in these experiements, I’ve been playing with Eterna Blach Bypass again. I love this simulation for its low saturation character matched with bold, but controlled contrast. It’s fun to create with, and has a way of displaying a wider spectrum of styles than the other simulations.

For this recipe, I started with a desire to find something that would bring earthy, rocky and natural scenes to life in a new way. The aim was something impactful, without being too artifical, and certainly a style that looked great for nature photography, and yes, granite rocks too.

Apart from a quirky base colour balance, the result is neither especially warm or cool, but manages to accent both brown and blue tones. This makes blue skies impactful and is especially good with white clouds in the sky as well.

The tones do lend themselves to winter scenes as well, surpessing greens and alowing frost details to stand out. It works best with good lighting, like sunlight or bright hazy mist, but it’s great fun all round, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy trying it as much as I do.

Pale colours film simulation recipe inspired by Amber T200 film

It’s time to create a film recipe that mimics a real world film, and one that has a characterful look that I’ve not seen presented in many other films before.

The film in question is RETO Amber T200, which is a Tungsten colour balanced 35mm film, which creates faded prints in daylight, tinted with a pale blue, slightly purple tone.

I found this look very interesting, and wondered if it would be possible to recreate it, or at least something like it, using our Fujifilm cameras.

My resulting recipe shares quite a lot of the qualities in sample images, especially when over exposed by two stops at +2/3. The base simulation is Pro Neg. Standard, which I found more like the samples than my first attempts with Classic Chrome.

The images that you capture will often be pale with faded colour, so this recipe is something that might not suit all situations. I enjoy using it in watery sunlight and bright but cloudy conditions. But there’s no reason to limit yourself that that, and to have some fun experiementing with this distinctive and unique look. An example might be to try it under artificial light at night. Like the film it mimics, this recipe has a white balance which is designed for this even if most images are taken in daylight.

Lomochrome Color 92 film recreated with Classic Negative for Fujifilm cameras

In the Film Recipes Facebook Group, we often discuss how to recreate a particular look seen elsewhere, whether that be the style of a photographer or a film from a particular manufacturer. One of our members asked recently about the unique look of Lomochrome Color 92 film, with its deep shadows and speciifc colour appearance.

When I saw the sameple images (I’ve included one here), I was compelled to try and reproduce at least a similar look for our Fujifilm cameras.

The key elements were the color tone and low saturation, the deep shadows, creamy neutrals and heavy grain. To me, this all seemed possible by working with Classic Negative as a starting point.

My process involved a lot of fiddling with settings in X RAW Studio, working with RAW files from visits to forests, beaches and, to include some people, a tennis tournament from earlier in the year. Here is my resulting film recipe, which I have been enjoying testing out in the wild, and am pleased to share here with you now.

Nostalgic flat tones film recipe with a cinematic Fujifilm feel

You may have seen in some recent film recipes that I took a trip to Paris this Summer to watch the Olympic Games Tennis. I created a number of new recipes that would hopefully suit the hard light conditions, perhaps work well in the streets of Paris, and bring something uniquely Fujifilm to my images.

Of all the recipes that I explored, this one is perhaps the most characterful, with a strongly nostgalgic vibe, very flat tones for a soft look, and warmth in a subtle way. It’s a cinematic look film recipe with a summer vibe. If you’re guessing ahead, you’ll know that the Eterna Cinema film simulation shares many of these features, and that is indeed the base for this recipe.

The real magic though comes from the somewhat unusual colour balance based on a Fluorescent setting. There are three of these, which are intended to bring artificial light back to something more neutral, but I personally find that they can be a wonderful starting point for a film recipe. Matched to Eterna with its mellow undertones, we get a unique new look.

I quickly became addicted to using this, and took all sorts of photos before my trip to Paris, and whilst there I took my personal favourite image from the tennis tourament. This shot of Iga Swiatek preparing to serve had such a retro feel to it that I just love, but it also shows me that tennis is an individual sport with the player alone in the arena battling for the win.

Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe for cinematic tones and muted colour

I love a muted colour look, and this draws me to shoot with film recipes made with the Classic Chrome, Eterna Cinema and Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulations. Each of these starts with a degree of reduced saturation, and by pushing that further with a negative colour value, a paler often nostalgic look can be achieved.

For this film recipe, I started with the setting of another softer look, Arthouse Cinema, which I published alomost two years ago back in 2022. That recipe worked with the characterful tones of Eterna, and brought out teal hints in blues and mellowed the greens.

In this adaptation, the base simulation has been switched to Eterna Bleach Bypass, which brings a punchier contrast and a further step of desaturation. For me, this was a step too far from my hoped for look, so this recipe reinjects some of the lost colour for a unique teal and cream look and feel.

My personal view is that the result is a versatile film recipe that can be used in a wide range of conditions, bringing teal tones to the fore, but without it being overpowering. I’m a huge fan of this overall colour character, and am happy to consider it my new favourite Bleach Bypass recipe. I found myself using it more and more, easily taking over 100 sample images, both on X-Trans IV and later on X-Trans V.

A fashion shoot film recipe using the Classic Negative film simulation

Sometimes, inspiration for film recipes comes from varied sources. I’ll see an image or gallery and think about whether the look can be matched with a film simulation recipe. This happened on a recent trip to Barcelona, when I was on a trip to watch a tennis tournament. The event was covered in the magazine section of La Vanguardia newspaper, and despite not being able to read the Spanish articles about Carlos Alcaraz and other things, I could enjoy leafing through.

One of the sections was a tennis inspired fashion shoot for their clothing sponsor Mango.

These shots were taken on and around tennis courts and had a desaturated retro look. Thos are keywords that I can work with, and so I started to experiement with film recipe settings that gave a similar look.

I chose to use Classic Negative film simulation, although Pro Neg Std might also have worked well. Other settings were fairly standard for a flat tonal look like this … softened highlights, DR400 and of course, reduced colour.

Arguably, my recipe is a little less green toned that the article photos, but I felt that it still captures the nostalgic vibe and worked well with the abundance of orange and blue on show at the tennis tournament. I hope you enjoy it.

Here’s a hard working film recipe that is flexible and natural, responding well in bright, shady and golden hour conditions. It has a soft muted tone character, which produces a sophisticated image with a film like feel.

The base for this film recipe is the Pro Neg Standard film simulation, which despite its portrait origins, is a versatile choice for a softer look in natural settings. I’ve used it a lot in outdoor themed film recipes, and with this look, I’ve found another new way to present it.

The contrast is soft with similarities to Eterna, but there is a different character to the greens and creams with this recipe. I found the colours felt similar to those you might find in English country fashions, such as you might come across at a county show or horse riding meet-up. Or, perhaps, think of agricultural greens, like you’d find on an old style Land Rover, rather than the shiny new ones.

Regardless of all that, this recipe is right at home in the countryside, in woodlands and all manner of outdoor settings. It’s a cousin to other nature friendly film recipes such as Aged Kodak Portra, Wigan Pier, Explorer’s Cinematic, or Natural Standard.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe inspired by early Collodion photography processes

This nostalgic film recipe is a sister to the Collodion Color film recipe, in that it is inspired by the same early photographic processes. It captures a muted tone look with extreme softness, in a nod to the earliest equipment and results from experiemental color photo processing.

The main reason for this second recipe is to give users without Eterna Bleach Bypass a chance to experiement with the same vibe. This recipe uses Classic Negative simulation, which if you don’t have, you could swap for Pro Neg Standard instead.

The main element here remains the strong -5 clarity setting, which adds a dreamy softness to images, and is especially impactful in out of focus areas, adding a hazy bokeh feel. This setting is one that many people dislike because of the processing delay, but it is a key element in the look, so do keep it if you can be patient between shots.

The resulting images are nostalgic, soft and have a muted tone. The recipe works well in soft light and the golden hour, and with the softness in out of focus areas, is a great one to try with macro subjects or abrstrat or detail shots. The look is simiar to Collodion Color, which inspired this recipe, so feel free to use either, and have some fun.
