    Chromium 44

Sometimes, what you need is a simple Classic Chrome recipe that isn’t overstyled, and doesn’t shout for attention because of the tone or hue. An everyday film recipe that just looks good.

That was what was in my mind when creating Chromium 44. It’s based on the Classic Chrome film simulation, and has a medium warm tone from a Daylight balance with a 4, -4 shift. Other than that, there are slightly softer highlights and reduced saturation to produce soft and smooth images.

The tone is warm, but still natural, and is particularly suited to the paler light in the winter, or when you don’t want an overly vibrant result.

A slight nostalgic haze has been added with a -2 clarity setting, which softens things a touch more. You can always skip that setting of course, but I hope that you’ll enjoy the results. This soft tone recipe doesn’t demand attention, letting your photos do the talking.

Velvia Dream, Vivid Gold for Older Sensors

Fujifilm Velvia film simulation recipe for rich golden images from many cameras

    Velvia Dream Film Recipe

    Velvia Dream

Some of my most popular film recipes are those created with Classic Negative and featuring a warm rich tone. When I share images made with these, and especially Goldeneye, and the recent Dreamland, I often get questions about how to recreate the look with older sensors.

This presents a challenge to me, as I only own one camera, and the quality of the native film simulations are hard to fake. Certainly, the Fujifilm colour science and processing algorithms are way more sophisticated than the adjustments that I make in a film recipe, but that’s not a reason to be defeated.

I have created this film recipe as a mimic to Goldeneye and Dreamland, using the Velvia film simulation (the first recipe I have tried with this), and I have kept to settings that are common on the widest range of Fujifilm cameras. It shares a lot of the qualities of these film recipes, without the dependence on Classic Negative.

Dreamland, Warm and Cosy Like a Dream

Warm and hazy film recipe for a dream like look with strong colour

    Dreamland Film Recipe

    Dreamland

Here’s a film recipe with a feel good factor. The Dreamland film recipe brings a rich and warm tone to your images with a hazy softness like a remembered dream. It’s one of my more extreme film recipes with a high saturation and bold look.

At the heart of the look is Classic Negative, which is set at 5,500k with a 5, -5 additional shift into toasty warm territory. The softness comes from negative clarity, which you can also achieve with a cinebloom or mist filter.

This recipe prefers bright light or golden hour, giving somewhat treacle tones in dull conditions. However, if you like that, then consider it a bonus!

Black Friday, Mono with Moody Mid Tones

Grainy monotone film recipe using the Acros film simulation

    Black Friday Film Recipe

    Black Friday

I’m nothing if not topical, releasing this grainy and characterful mono recipe on Black Friday. Yes, it’s available free, with nothing to pay now or later 🙂

The base for this recipe is the Acros film simulation, which is one of the best mono recipes straight out of the box. In my tweaking, I’ve added lashings of grain, and pushed the dynamic range with stronger highlights and deeper shadow. Burnout is limited with a -1/3 underexposure suggestion. Oh, and because it’s me, I’ve added just a small mono colour shift, with one click towards warm.

Vintage Kodachrome, The Hip Classic Chrome

Kodachrome film recipe with a nostalgic 1960s Classic Chrome look

    Vintage Kodachrome Film Recipe

    Vintage Kodachrome

Far out! This is one hip film recipe for groovy 1960’s toned images. The output is wonderfully retro with a real vintage feel, but is still completely usable all day in a wide range of situations. It’s part of my growing collection of Kodak themed recipes, and sits somewhere between my original Kodachrome recipe, and the softer Kodak Portra Daily.

The magic of this recipe lies in the tremendous tones of Classic Chrome which are enhanced here with warm colour balance and tone adjustments to give a bright look with soft shadows.

In many ways, this is Classic Chrome dialed up, giving a classic Kodachrome feel with a vintage edge. It’s great in a variety of situations, and throughout the seasons.

Fujicolor Daily, a Classic Negative All Rounder

    Classic Negative film simulation recipe

    Fujicolor Daily Film Recipe

    Fujicolor Daily

The Classic Negative film simulation brings a nostalgic film print look to our cameras that is reminiscent of Fujicolor prints, especially from 10+ years ago. Using the simulation with no adjustments is great, but there are also lots of possibilities as a recipe with adjustments to other settings.

For Fujicolor Daily, I wanted to take an approach that brought out the feel of the Fujicolor film, whilst keeping a look that was as versatile as possible for daily use.

This recipe joins other ‘daily’ recipes, Kodak Portra Daily and Kodachrome Daily which are also versatile and highly usable.

Mono Moonlight, Faking a Full Moon Effect

Full moon film simulation recipe with a moonlight blue colour tone

    Mono Moonlight Film Recipe

    Mono Moonlight

Here’s a film recipe that I created as a bit of an experiement, simply to see whether I could fake nighttime during the day. It’s a monotone recipe with a fairly strong blue tone, and the effect works best in bright light with bold highlights and deep shadows. Of course, you can use it at night as well, where the tone gives a moonlight feel.

  • Whakamuri, for Retro Golden Tone Images

Whakamuri, for Retro Golden Tone Images

Warm shifted film recipe for nostalgic retro images with Classic Chrome

    Whakamuri Film Recipe

    Whakamuri

The word whakamuri is a Maori word that translates loosely as ‘looking back’ or ‘counting backwards’, so I’ve adopted it as the name of this retro toned recipe for styling images with a golden aged tone.

The base film simulation is Classic Chrome which is pushed far far into the warm tones zone with a +6, -8 colour balance shift. This gives a strong yellow creamy styling to most images and is the heart of the look.

In keeping with the nostalgic retro theme, shadows are softened and colour is muted. There’s a dose of grain in here too, along with negative clarity adding to the slightly hazy analog feel.

Easy Going, for Bright & Easy Soft Tones

Fujifilm film recipe for soft tones using Pro Neg Hi on X-Trans IV cameras

    Easy Going Film Recipe

    Easy Going

I really love the softer tones and natural look of the Pro Neg film simulations, and find that they make for a great day-to-day choice. For this recipe, I took Pro Neg Hi simulation as a base, giving a natural, standard contrast look, and brightened and warmed it for a happy, welcoming feel.

It’s the sort of recipe that can be used to brighten up just about anything, so I decided to simply call it ‘Easy Going’, because it’s so happy to be used whenever you want. One note of caution though, is that the highlights are lifted, and may burn out. It’s all part of the look, but it might surprise you if you aren’t expecting it.

So there we have it, an Easy Going film recipe, with a nice balance and tone that can be used day-to-day, especially to capture brightness in sunny conditions.

Parklife, Cosy with just a little Blur

Classic Negative film simulation film recipe, with warm shift and boosted colour

    Parklife Film Recipe

    Parklife

I put my trousers on, have a cup of tea, and I think about leaving the house. Here’s the third in the occasional series of film recipes with names based on song titles. First we had Karmachroma, then Ruby Tuesday, and now we have Parklife. This recipe has boosted colour and a haze from clarity to give a warm cosy look for sunny days in the park and elsewhere.

The recipe is great in the sun, and even better around golden hour. It’ll no doubt be a good partner in what’s left of the Autumn season, with Classic Negative loving reds and oranges in the fall color. And, for our friends in tropical lands or the Southern Hemisphere, a great recipe for you too.
