Kodak Portra film simulation recipe for Fujifilm cameras using Eterna

    Aged Kodak Portra Film Recipe

    Aged Kodak Portra

For this recipe, I was inspired by an Instagram that I follow, expiredbren who posts a really great set of images with Portra and Gold films, and sometimes expired rolls too.

In some of his recent images (June & July ’22), he’s been posting classic VWs, and I just love the tones of the images. This green Beetle is one of his IG shots, go follow him for more.

In this film recipe, I wanted to try and achieve a similar look, so I came up with an Eterna based set-up that I call, Aged Kodak Portra.

I’ve done some test shots in a variety of situations, and I think this recipe is at least similar to the wonderfully warm and faded look in Bren’s images.

Pro Neg Standard film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV

    Natural Standard Film Recipe

    Natural Standard

Here’s a wonderful film recipe that captures the green of nature in a serene way. It’s a great choice for walks in natural surroundings, like woodlands, forests and nature parks.

Natural Standard has a soft tone look, with mid saturation and softened shadows. This helps to tame the extremes in a scene and give a mellow and calm look. This helps it work well in all conditions, making it a great general use outdoor recipe.

The settings for this recipe are simple with minor adjustments and a gently warmed colour balance. The use of the Pro Negative simulation and these settings allow the nature in your shots to be the focus of the image, rather than the retro effects of the film simulation.

  • Kodak Portra Daily, for Portra 160 Anytime

Kodak Portra Daily, for Portra 160 Anytime

Classic Chrome film simulation recipe with Kodak Portra style tones

    Kodak Portra Daily Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra Daily

I originally devised this Kodak Portra style film recipe to give a classic Portra 160 35mm look to photos taken on a trip to Wimbledon. I realised soon after that I loved shooting with it, and the recipe needed a new name to reflect its versatility. So, Kodak Portra SW19 has become Kodak Portra Daily.

Depending on which samples you look at, Kodak Portra film images have a lighter balance and either a subtle green tone, a pale pink tone or creamy tone to the highlights and neutrals. My original Kodak Portra film recipe covers the creamy look, Kodak Portra 66 covers the pinks, and this recipe covers off the greens.

It’s got quite a bit in common with other Portra recipes (there are more linked at the bottom), but for this recipe I chose an auto white balance to make it more useful in a wide range of conditions.

So here is my, ‘use anytime Kodak Portra’ for use at tennis tournaments, and everywhere else!

Film simulation recipe for X-Trans 4 Fujifilm cameras with a mellow retro feel

    Retro Standard Film Recipe

    Retro Standard

Here’s a cosy and warm recipe that gives a softened retro feel using Pro Neg Standard as the base film simulation. It works well in a wide range of light conditions, but gives the best effect in soft or hazy light and around the golden hour.

The sims for Classic Chrome & Classic Negative get a lot of attention from recipe makers, but I’m coming to love Pro Neg Standard more and more. And, because it’s present on older cameras, people with X-Trans 2 and 3 may be able to capture the essence of this recipe by skipping the settings they don’t have.

    Eterna Nostalgia Film Recipe

    Eterna Nostalgia

One of the tags I follow on Insta is #oldtonecollective where you can find many inspiring images in a retro influenced style. I was scrolling through some when I got the idea to adapt one of Eteernuh‘s recipes into something nostalgic.

The Eterna Nostalgia film recipe is based on the Eterna Cinema film simulation for Fujifilm X-series cameras, and is toned with a strong +5, -5 shift to give a warm and fuzzy tone. It’s a fun recipe to shoot with, giving a mellow retro look. It’s lovely at the beach, in hazy or misty conditions, and anywhere with old things to photograph.

Creamy Kodak Portra film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-trans IV cameras

    Kodak Portra 66 Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra 66

Some things seem to be made to go together, and in our world of film simulations and recipes, it’s Kodak Portra and fading Americana. Think of an abandoned gas station on a dusty desert highway. Creamy tones and washed out colours give a nostalgic feel. It’s the retro look of a trip along Route 66.

I haven’t been to the American West in about a decade, so I developed this recipe closer to home. I took it out and about on a city walk in Winchester and on some walks in the New Forest.

    Soft Cinnamon with Delicious Tones

Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe with a soft nostalgic look

    Soft Cinnamon Film Recipe

    Soft Cinnamon

Here’s a recipe that’s really tasty! It’s a soft and mellow film recipe, based on the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation. It has a warm cinnamon colour shift, and with reduced contrast and a little softness, it’s not at all overpowering. In fact, it’s a gentle recipe with a subtle cinnamon tone to the neutrals. Delicious!

Over time, I find myself coming back to this recipe again and again, and I am always impressed with how it renders all sorts of conditions from mid summer to the winter snow. It’s one of my personal favourites. You can see more of them on the Shortlist of Favourite Recipes.

Eternal Summer with Cinematic Portra Tones

Fujifilm film simulation for X-Trans IV giving Portra 160 looks with Eterna

    Eternal Summer Film Recipe

    Eternal Summer

Here’s an Eterna based film recipe that gives a clear but soft look that you can use all summer. It works really well in sunlight, giving a soft tone, capturing tones with that wonderfully cinematic look that Fujifilm’s Eterna does so well.

When shooting with it, I found it has a creamy feel quite similar to the popular Kodak Portra 160 or 400 recipes, especially in scenes with blue sky. This is probably a little gentler the those recipes, but there is a cinematic Portra vibe here that I think looks great, especially in the sunshine.

  • Fujicolor Natura with Soft Teal Tones

Fujicolor Natura with Soft Teal Tones

X-Trans IV Fujifilm film simulation recipe inspired by Fujicolor Natura 1600

    Fujicolor Natura Film Recipe

    Fujicolor Natura

This film recipe is one of the very first that I adapted to suit my personal soft tones style. The original for this recipe is by E. Fung and called Natura 1600. I was taken by the sparkling clarity and colour tones of that recipe, and followed its developments into a second version, where there was also a suggestion to try a new colour shift. Adding this 1, -6 shift brought teal tones to life and added a wonderful new character.

This inspired me to play with the settings further, and my adjustments led me to this version, which works really well in sunlight with a blue sky, just like E. Fung’s original recipe.

In my adaptation, slight underexposure and a softened shadows are key steps to get the soft toned teal blues and greens which characterise this recipe. Try to include the sky, or reflections of the sky in the images if you want the same tones to show through.

Fujicolor Superia film recipe for X-Trans IV Fujifilm cameras

    Mother Superia Film Recipe

    Mother Superia

I come up with the best names, right?! Here’s Mother Superia, a Classic Negative film simulation recipe with a Fujicolor Superia style in a soft and usable recipe for shooting anytime.

I’ve been trying to find a suitable recipe to pair up with this name for a while, and after three iterations of test recipes based on Fujicolor Superia styles, I’ve settled on this one. By using Classic Negative, there is a retro film edge to it, and greens are slightly blue toned. A warm color shift has tamed this effect, and as a result, reds and oranges now look great as well.

It’s not an accurate match to Fujicolor Superia film of course, although it does share a similar aesthetic. I’ve added links to some more Superia style recipes at the bottom of this post.
