Fujifilm simulation recipe for Fujicolor C200 film using Classic Negative as a base

    Fujicolor C200 Film Recipe

    Fujicolor C200

Fujifilm film recipes that mimic real world film looks are a useful resource for owners of X-Series cameras. They give a way to shoot with all the convenience of the latest electronics and optics, but with an analog output reminiscent of 35mm manual photography.

On this site, I have film recipes inspired by Kodak film looks and Fujifilm Fujicolor styles. These use the built in simulations and other adjustments to capture some of the spirit of these giants of photography heritage.

In this recipe, I’ve looked to create a recipe that mimics the versatile film negative style of Fujicolor C200 film. The heavy lifting is provided by Classic Negative, which has a strongly evocative film print look, especially reminiscent of Fujicolor prints. I’ve softened and warmed this base to reduce some of its more divisive characteristics. In this recipe grass is less blue and more shadow detail is retained. It all makes for a highly usable recipe that’s good for use in many different conditions, but retains a nostalgic film negative feel.

Eldorado, for 24 Carat Golden Hours

Fujifilm Film Simulation Recipe for Golden Hour using the Astia Film Simulation

    Eldorado Film Recipe

    Eldorado

If the sun is shining around sunset and sunrise, I love nothing more that to take a little photo walk and shoot some scenes in the golden hour light. Not only in the light softer at this time, but everything is bathed in the beautiful tones of the low sun.

I’ve made quite a number of recipes that exploit these conditions, and a selection is towards the bottom of this page. But, just like with other treats, there’s always room for one more, so here is Eldorado, with a strong yellow tone in golden hour.

The look is based on the Astia film simulation, and maintains a strong golden look even with colour reduced to -3. Part of the colourful impact comes from other settings, like a +1 for shadows and +2/3 exposure suggestion, but mainly from the strong combination of the Underwater white balance and a rich +6, -7 colour shift.

The colour tone also works well to enhance the autumn season as the leaves begin to turn. Here, cloudy conditions work just as well and sunny ones, as you can see further down in the image samples.

  • Three Degrees, Deep Tone and Contrast

Three Degrees, Deep Tone and Contrast

Pro Neg film simulation recipe with deep intensity for a contrasty look

    Three Degrees Film Recipe

    Three Degrees

Inspiration for my film recipes often comes as ideas after seeing the work of other creators. In this case, I was inspired by the great work of Captn Look and his moody Dune film recipe. I loved the deep intensity of this look, and it led me to explore this style with my own recipe creation.

For my deep tones recipe, I used a base of Pro Neg High, which is shifted to a warm setting. Other adjustments, which use a lot of 3s include undexposure by -2/3ev, lifted highlights to +3 and reduced saturation to -3. Clarity is reduced too for moody softness, also at -3. This last part is important to the look, so it does mean that this recipe needs a recent camera with clarity, or a bloom/mist style filter on the camera.

For the best results with Three Degrees, I’d recommend shooting in bright light, and, importantly, don’t forget to underexpose by the two stops or so to make the highlights stand out from dark backgrounds, but not be so bright as to burn out. If the highlights are burned out, underexpose some more.

  • Spanish Summer, Bright Summer Recipe

    Spanish Summer, Bright Summer Recipe

Velvia film recipe for a bright summer sunshine style for fun, travel and vacations

    Spanish Summer Film Recipe

    Spanish Summer

Here’s a happy tone stylised recipe that brings a cheerful and bright summer look to your images. It’s super cosy and hazy, and it is perfect for holiday and vacation images and trips to the beach.

To achieve this bright and cheery look, I’ve chosen the Velvia film simulation as the base, and pushed the exposure with a +1 (three clicks of the wheel) over exposure recommendation. A hazy effect is added too, with -5 clarity, which you can skip if you can add a medium to strong mist/bloom filter to your lens.

Overall the image is lemon and lime toned, with lots of haze. It works especially well at the beach and in strong sunshine. I’d suggest that summer scenes and beach fun are the things to go for with this holiday recipe.

  • Kojak Gold, Who Loves Ya, Baby?

Kojak Gold, Who Loves Ya, Baby?

Nostalgic classic negative film simulation recipe, like Kodak Gold prints

    Kojak Gold Film Recipe

    Kojak Gold

Kojak Gold. It’s a cool name, right? It’s an even cooler look!

It’s true that I get a silly amount of personal satisfaction from some of the film recipe names that I dream up. Hot on the heels of some of my other favourites, like Mother Superia, Karmachroma, Waldorf Astia and Flatpack is this new name for a retro Kodak film look. What could be more 70s than Kojak?

Living up to it’s name, this recipe looks to produce a nostalgic look based on Kodak Gold film, with a feel like 35mm prints from this popular film stock. It’s based on Classic Negative (which means newer cameras only, sorry), and uses a warm gold-like colour shift and a generally soft set-up, including negative clarity and reduced sharpness.

The results are warm and film-like, with a soft feel and nostalgic print style look. The nostalgic elements come through in sunshine, but the recipe is a good choice for a film like look in all conditions. I took it on holiday with me and it became an instant favourite. I’m sure that you will love it too.

Did you know? This is film recipe 200 on this website. Who knew there would be so many film recipe styles that our cameras could produce?

    Technicolor Dream, Vibrant Fantasy Tones

Film simulation recipe with a colourful purple tone and hazy softness

    Technicolor Dream Film Recipe

    Technicolor Dream

Here’s a trippy film recipe with a bright and colourful look that’s beautiful at sunset and a blast of crazy purple haze at other times. It’s vibrant and fun, and could be a great choice for capturing a party atmosphere.

In my testing, I found that the effect on natural scenes was certainly fun to see, giving a soft purple cast to some images. It really came to life when shooting towards the light, and as the day moved into the golden hour. For scens around this time, a striking and rich tone was captured.

  • Fujicolor Gold, a Warm Film Like Style

Fujicolor Gold, a Warm Film Like Style

Film simulation recipe with a hybrid Kodak Gold – Fuji Gold look

    Fujicolor Gold Film Recipe

    Fujicolor Gold

A little warmth can add to the mood of a photo, bringing out a cosy feel and making magic hour shots even more magical. That’s the spirit of this warm toned film recipe, that shoots a Fuicolor look in the spirit of Kodak Gold film.

The Fujicolor Gold recipe brings together the Classic Negative base, that suits a Fujicolor film look so well, with the warmth and soft tone of a Kodak Gold look for X-Trans IV cameras.

The warmth isn’t overpowering, and in part this is kept in check by my intention for this recipe to be shot one or two stops overexposed, +1/3 or +2/3.

With all of this coming together, the soft tones and mid amount of warmth, means that this recipe can be used anytime. It will deliver for you in a wide range of conditions.

However, the golden hour is when this recipe really comes to life, so do try it when the sun is low in the sky, either in the mornings or evenings, to enjoy the ‘gold’ of Fujicolor Gold as it was intended.

As a landscape photographer with a passion for softer tones and atmospheric looks, I am a firm fan of the Eterna/Cinema film simulation. For this film recipe, I wanted to take everything that I enjoyed about Eterna and max it out.

This Eterna recipe is a celebration of the warm soft look and cinematic feel of Eterna, that lovels going on photowalks, especially in woodlands and forests, and when light is warmer at the beginning and end of the day.

  • Heart of Gold, for Glorious Golden Hours

Heart of Gold, for Glorious Golden Hours

Classic Negative film recipe with golden orange tones in the golden hour

    Heart of Gold Film Recipe

    Heart of Gold

Here’s a film recipe that loves the golden hour so much, that it brings the glorious golden tones to any time of day. The base film simulation is Classic Negative, and much like the Xylochrome film recipe, this one was created as an experiment that uses a sliding scale of settings, starting from a 6540K colour balance.

Depending on the conditions, this recipes brings a subtle peach tone to neutrals, or a vivid tangerine hue, which shows most often at sunset. Which you get isn’t quite as unexpected as the infinite improbablility drive, so you can relax and enjoy a relaxing warmth to any image set taken with this recipe.

Vintage Astia, a Nostalgic Negative Mood

Astia film simulation recipe with a warm grainy retro look for X-Trans IV

    Vintage Astia Film Recipe

    Vintage Astia

So here’s a recipe that doesn’t replicate any film in particular, but has many of the qualities of a film. This is down to the use of Astia film simulation as the base to the recipe. It has a solid film-like feel, especially in the tone of the highlights, and is also a nice break from Classic Chrome and Classic Negative, which are quite distinctive in their styling.

The vintage part is an added mood, bringing warmth, grain and a gentle reduction in saturation. The result is a warm look, with the retro feel of images as they once were, but without being too much like any Kodachrome or Fujicolor style. I’ve become quite partial to it, using it as a general use recipe in all sorts of conditions.

This recipe also has a passing resemblence to Nostalgic Negative from the newest cameras, so if you want a recipe to fake it, this may be the one.
