Film recipe for X-Trans IV using Eterna for a mellow soft look

One of the tags I follow on Insta is #oldtonecollective where you can find many inspiring images in a retro influenced style. I was scrolling through some when I got the idea to adapt one of Eteernuh‘s recipes into something nostalgic.

The Eterna Nostalgia film recipe is based on the Eterna Cinema film simulation for Fujifilm X-series cameras, and is toned with a strong +5, -5 shift to give a warm and fuzzy tone. It’s a fun recipe to shoot with, giving a mellow retro look. It’s lovely at the beach, in hazy or misty conditions, and anywhere with old things to photograph.

X-Trans IV film simulation recipe with moody Eterna tones

When you stream the latest shows, do you notice when they have a moody colour tone? We watched a legal crime drama show recently and there was a distinct cool vibe to the picture, which I thought would be fun to try and make in a film recipe.

Here’s my Cinematone film recipe, based on the Eterna Cinema film simulation. I’ve set a cooler tone with a -1, -2 colour shift and kept things muted but useable with the other settings.

I think this might take some amazing city photos and street life shots, and it can work in any weather. It’s another great example of how flexible Fujifilm film simulations are, giving a moody feel to all sorts of scenes, including my snaps of our local area.

It’s a different look to my other cinematic recipes, Cinemachrome and Arthouse Cinema, although there are some similarities. Whichever you choose, have fun shooting in a cool movie show style.

A stylised Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe for Fujiflim X-Trans 4 cameras

For a trip back well over 50 years, this nostalgic film recipe makes use of the Eterna Bleach Bypass recipe. It’s great in hazy light or weak sunlight, which it can accentuate with it’s mellow pale tones.

Creams and soft mossy greens are the main characteristics of this recipe, which means it can work well on old buildings or pastoral scenes. Don’t be shy of negative space with the Fading Memory recipe. A pale creamy sky is all part of the aesthetic with this film recipe.

Fujifilm film simulation for X-Trans IV giving Portra 160 looks with Eterna

Here’s an Eterna based film recipe that gives a clear but soft look that you can use all summer. It works really well in sunlight, giving a soft tone, capturing tones with that wonderfully cinematic look that Fujifilm’s Eterna does so well.

When shooting with it, I found it has a creamy feel quite similar to the popular Kodak Portra 160 or 400 recipes, especially in scenes with blue sky. This is probably a little gentler the those recipes, but there is a cinematic Portra vibe here that I think looks great, especially in the sunshine.

X-Trans IV Fujifilm film simulation recipe inspired by Fujicolor Natura 1600

This film recipe is one of the very first that I adapted to suit my personal soft tones style. The orginal for this recipe is by E. Fung and called Natura 1600. I was taken by the sparkling clarity and colour tones of that recipe, and followed its developments into a second version, where there was also a suggestion to try a new colour shift. Adding this 1, -6 shift brought teal tones to life and added a wonderful new character.

This insipred me to play with the settings further, and my adjustments led me to this version, which works really well in sunlight with a blue sky, just like E. Fung’s original recipe.

In my adaptation, slight underexposure and a softened shadows are key steps to get the soft toned teal blues and greens which characterise this recipe. Try to include the sky, or reflections of the sky in the images if you want the same tones to show through.

Fujicolor Superia film recipe for X-Trans IV Fujifilm cameras

I come up with the best names, right?! Here’s Mother Superia, a Classic Negative film silmulation recipe with a Fujicolor Superia style in a soft and usable recipe for shooting anytime.

I’ve been trying to find a suitable recipe to pair up with this name for a while, and after three iterations of test recipes based on Fujicolor Superia styles, I’ve settled on this one. By using Classic Negative, there is a retro film edge to it, and greens are slightly blue toned. A warm color shift has tamed this effect, and as a result, reds and oranges now look great as well.

It’s not an accurate match to Fujicolor Superia film of course, although it does share a similar aesthetic. I’ve added links to some more Superia style recipes at the bottom of this post.

Nostalgic Kodachrome style film recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

Add 50 years to a scene by shooting with Retrochrome! It’s the film recipe that whisks you back to the 70s and those warm, mellow summer evenings.

Retrochrome uses the Classic Chrome film simulation, with a warm colour balance based on the shade setting, and reduced saturation for mellowness. The look would suit images of anything aged, like classic cars, old buildings, thrift store finds, or maybe just your morning coffee or natural scenes in sunny weather.

The look is similar to a Kodachrome II or 25 aesthetic, although it is not based on these films in particular.

Fujifilm X-Trans 4 film recipe for a Kodak Portra 400 style

Kodak Portra film was hugely popular, and with its different versions, came to be a favourite for many 35mm photographers, each using the one they liked the best. Now, with the magic of Fujifilm film recipes, there are a selection of film recipes to help produce a look that is close to different editions of the Portra film.

I’ve been testing out a recipe for Portra 400 adapted from the Fuji X Weekly recipe by Fujifilm Film Simulations Group user Tomas Tuoma. His Kodak Portra adaptation is one that I really enjoy.

I tested it on a cloudy day, and found the colours bold and amazing, but for my preferred take on the feel of KP400, I wanted a little more grain and a little less punch. So, here we are with a couple more tweaks in this recipe and now it’s Kodak Portra Grainy.

And, since first publishing this page, I’ve shot in full summer sunshine, and added some of those photos further down the page.
