    Bluegrass

Bluegrass – Cool Tone Classic Negative

A Classic Negative recipe that leans into blue-shifted greens for a cooler, more contemplative look.

Classic Negative is a film simulation that earns its reputation through character rather than accuracy. It produces the kind of colour palette you find in old print photographs — highlights that glow with a faint blush of pink, and greens that drift slightly towards blue. Most Classic Negative film recipes push back against this tendency, adding warm white balance shifts to bring vegetation back towards the natural. Bluegrass takes the opposite approach. Here, we let the simulation do what it wants, and make those cool, faintly blue greens the whole point.

The settings are restrained. The tone curve pulls highlights up and shadows down for a wide, cinematic range, while a slight underexposure keeps everything grounded and moody. The white balance uses Auto as its base, but a ‑3 red shift pulls the colour further towards the cool end — this is not an accidental lean but a deliberate push, amplifying what the simulation already wants to do. The result is a recipe where grass and leaves feel genuinely different — not simply desaturated, but shifted to a place that makes you look at everyday green subjects in a new way. The feeling is somewhere between a rainy afternoon and a long walk somewhere you have not been before.

The cooler character that makes Bluegrass work so well for foliage and overcast daylight turns out to be equally useful after dark. Under artificial light — sodium street lamps, neon signs, shop fronts — the blue tone in this recipe adds a striking quality to night shots. It was not planned that way; it emerged as a happy accident of the design. But the same logic applies: where other recipes might warm up night scenes, Bluegrass lets the cool shift amplify the atmosphere that is already there.

If you find yourself in woodland, walking through a field, or out in the city after dark, Bluegrass is worth loading up. It rewards patience with subjects that other recipes gloss over, and it is particularly effective when the light is flat, grey, or cloudy — conditions that many photographers wait to improve, but which this recipe actively embraces.

Rizzle Clicks, Grainy Classic Negative for Knockout Reds

Grainy analog film simulation recipe with mellow greens, a warm balance and striking red tones.

Here’s a film simulation recipe that everyone looking for film like vibes can enjoy. It is grainy with the wonderfully analog look that only Classic Negative delivers. It has a warm tone that adds creamy shifts to most scenes. This makes greens turn more mellow, but most impactfully, reds become a real star feature, almost jumping out of the image.

Grizzly grain suits photos taken in gloomy conditions or low light, but this recipe is also happy with lots of light, or the softness of golden hour. The tone curve is tamed a little to give this versatility, meaning that you can use it successfully in all sorts of situations. But that versatility is a happy accident, because this recipe is really here for the reds. If you can find them, make a feature of them, and this recipe will reward you.

Capturing premium colour tones with Fujifilm Reala Ace Simulation

Leica cameras are a top tier product offering excellent image quality, fantastic build and design, and a reputation that is trusted by professionals the world over. Images are controlled, clean and natural, without the standout character of Fujifilm simulations. But there is a certain something to them, often found in gently pink red tones that make photos recognisably Leica.

So, for this film recipe, I wanted to capture as many of these qualities as I could, not necessarily hoping to fool observers, but to bring as much Leica character to Fuji SOOC photos as possible.

Using Reala Ace as the base simulation feels right to me, bringing the smoothness of tone and controlled, clean results. Grain is kept off and the Color Chrome effects are put to work to retain definition in coloured subjects. This allows a boost to saturation without making photos look too artificial.

This film simulation recipe for Leica colours has been available in the Film Recipes app for a little while, and I’d certainly recommend you grab a copy to get access to more recipes, including a Pro NEG Hi. Leica look and around 800 other recipe styles.

There are many ways to interpret a style, and this is my best take on a real Leica look. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Underwood, Deep Forest Mood Film Recipe

Creative deep tones film recipe for exploring the details found in nature

Here’s a fresh new look at the Reala Ace film simulation, found on the newer Fujifilm X Series cameras. I have it on my X-S20 via a software update, but models like the X100VI, X-M5, X-E5 and X-T50 will have it available too.

In this recipe, I’ve explored a deeper look that keep the low contrast character of Reala Ace, but uses underexposure to dramatically change the look of the resulting photos. Blacks become a dominant feature, but with the impressive tone control of our cameras, we actually see a lot of mood and detail in the deep tones.

The colour balance here is fairly neutral, working well with forest and woodland finds, and a reduced saturation adds to the character of the resulting photos. In dull weather, the result can almost look moonlit, and I’ve come to prefer using this recipe when the weather is damp or grey.

It’s a fun recipe to experiement with, presenting your familiar favourites in a very different way. I love it for woodland walks, but I am excited to see what you make of it too. Have fun!

Gneiss Shot, Granite Tones Bleach Bypass

Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation recipe that enhances blues, creams and browns

In preparation for the changing seasons been working on some more film recipe looks for winter, and in these experiements, I’ve been playing with Eterna Blach Bypass again. I love this simulation for its low saturation character matched with bold, but controlled contrast. It’s fun to create with, and has a way of displaying a wider spectrum of styles than the other simulations.

For this recipe, I started with a desire to find something that would bring earthy, rocky and natural scenes to life in a new way. The aim was something impactful, without being too artifical, and certainly a style that looked great for nature photography, and yes, granite rocks too.

Apart from a quirky base colour balance, the result is neither especially warm or cool, but manages to accent both brown and blue tones. This makes blue skies impactful and is especially good with white clouds in the sky as well.

The tones do lend themselves to winter scenes as well, surpessing greens and alowing frost details to stand out. It works best with good lighting, like sunlight or bright hazy mist, but it’s great fun all round, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy trying it as much as I do.

123 Chrome – Classic Kodachrome Look

A versatile film simulation recipe for landscape, travel and general photography

Back again with a massive banger of a film recipe that delivers beautiful looks in fine weather for a huge range of subjects. This Classic Chrome simulation recipe presents a classic Kodak mood with definite Kodachrome vibes that come through in the colours and slightly nostalgic edge to photos taken with it. It’s fully compatible with all new and recent cameras too, so whether you have an X100VI, X-E5, X-M5, X-T50 or older camera back to the X100V, then this recipe will work really well for you.

I did my field testing on a trip to the coast, and you can see how the blues of the sky and sea have rendered. I gave the Color Chrome Blue a push to achieve this, and I love how it adds impact without looking false. This is set to weak on new cameras, and strong on older models, but you can try strong on new cameras too if you really love a deep blue.

Your other option with this recipe is to introduce grain at Weak, Small. I’ve kept things super smooth in the published settings, but for a more film like result, you can add this on if you prefer. Otherwise, enjoy the Kodachrome vibes of this sunny day workhorse, and if you like your results, do let me know.

Astia Film Simulation Recipe that captured Spring and Summer Greens

All of a sudden, the bare bitterness of Winter has disappeared and green leaves are everywhere again. These bold and bright greens can be tricky to capture, and some film recipes make them look washed out or brown. That’s when a springtime film recipe with a focus on green tones is needed, and this one might be just the right one for your next photo session. It’s lovely in trees and woodlands, and anywhere with natural greens.

Astia is a vibrant film simulation with exciting colour and tone. With some simple adjustments, these base qualities can be steered towards a look that loves green leaves and spring and summer colours. It retains a natural feel, and adds just the right amount of warmth and contrast control. Some of this control comes from the Color Chrome Effect, but this recipe is also easy to adapt to older Fujifilm cameras that don’t have this option.

Umbrella Film Recipe. Is this my best ever film recipe?

Film like Classic Negative recipe, designed for rainy days but excellent in all conditions.

Throughout the winter the weather was dull and wet and I was really starting to miss photography. So, I decided to try and embrace the conditions and create a number of film simulation recipes for gloomy and wet days. I’ve made a bunch of these, and added them into my new Film Recipes app.

This film recipe is one of those creations, and I’ve been using it happily in grey and drizzly conditions for a few months now. I even featured it in my new Film.Recipes YouTube channel.

For owners of my film recipes app, there are regular photo challenges to enter, and in one recent round, Umbrella was one of the challenge film recipes. I love these challenges, not only because it gives that little extra push to get out there and take some photos, but with other Fujifilm photographers taking part from around the world, I get to see the film recipes in all sorts of new situations. This was the case with Umbrella.

Several of the photographers took this recipe and used it in bright sunny weather and in new locations and situations. Feedback began to come in explaining how much everyone was enjoying this recipe, and how it had a film like aesthetic that hadn’t really been seen too often before.

So here is Umbrella, which I am now making a free to all recipe. It was made for rainy days. but is a recipe that loves all weathers and brings a wonderfully toned film like feel to your photos. The more I use it, the more I love it, and I hope that you will too. It’s quite possibly my best ever film recipe!

Lomochrome Color 92 film recreated with Classic Negative for Fujifilm cameras

In the Film Recipes Facebook Group, we often discuss how to recreate a particular look seen elsewhere, whether that be the style of a photographer or a film from a particular manufacturer. One of our members asked recently about the unique look of Lomochrome Color 92 film, with its deep shadows and speciifc colour appearance.

When I saw the sameple images (I’ve included one here), I was compelled to try and reproduce at least a similar look for our Fujifilm cameras.

The key elements were the color tone and low saturation, the deep shadows, creamy neutrals and heavy grain. To me, this all seemed possible by working with Classic Negative as a starting point.

My process involved a lot of fiddling with settings in X RAW Studio, working with RAW files from visits to forests, beaches and, to include some people, a tennis tournament from earlier in the year. Here is my resulting film recipe, which I have been enjoying testing out in the wild, and am pleased to share here with you now.

This recipe has been available as an early releast in the Film Recipes app for the past few weeks. The app is always the best place to find all of my recipes, including many more that aren’t available anywhere else.

Barbour Green, Deep Mood Film Recipe

Dark green film recipe with lots of mood for gloomy and bad weather days

Over recent months, a lot of my focus has been directed towards completing and publishing my Film Recipes app. Apart from all the new things I have learned about apps, data and phones during this process, I’ve also had great fun adding many new recipes into the app. As I do this development, the mood of the current season is often reflected in the film recipes, and in the middle of a UK winter, gloomy conditions and bad weather have sent me in search of new looks to make the most of the weather.

One of the recipes I created is this one, which I call Barbour Green after the deep green tone that reminds me of country outdoor clothing, and as a recipe for getting out despite the weather, it seems appropriate. It’s become a personal favourite, but does come with two important notes; make sure to underexpose, and do try it in gloomy conditions, either dull weather or twilight. That’s where this recipe really comes to life.
