Velvia film recipe for a bright summer sunshine style for fun, travel and vacations

Here’s a happy tone stylised recipe that brings a cheerful and bright summer look to your images. It’s super cosy and hazy, and it is perfect for holiday and vacation images and trips to the beach.

To achieve this bright and cheery look, I’ve chosen the Velvia film simulation as the base, and pushed the exposure with a +1 (three clicks of the wheel) over exposure recommendation. A hazy effect is added too, with -5 clarity, which you can skip if you can add a medium to strong mist/bloom filter to your lens.

Overall the image is lemon and lime toned, with lots of haze. It works especially well at the beach and in strong sunshine. I’d suggest that summer scenes and beach fun are the things to go for with this holiday recipe.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe with a burned out desaturated look

It’s obvious to anyone reading this site that I love nostalgic looks and especially filmic looks that resemble aged prints, found many years after they were developed. These styles can evoke more feeling than clean modern looks, and are a fun way to shoot, especially for social media galleries.

For this nostalgic film recipe, I wanted to explore the style of childhood holiday snaps, taken perhaps on a sunny beach, but where the details have bleached away and the prints are fading and losing their colour.

This fading is acheived through overexposure and a mix of other settings, and is based on the Classic Negative simulation, for a print like look. One note is that I works best with sunny weather and bright light.

Whilst it’s a specialist style, it’s so much fun to use that it’s quickly become one of my favourite creations. It really is like shooting old prints in the style of those you rediscover after being hidden and forgotten. I’m really happy with the result, capturing a mood like old vacation prints, and especially the burned out bleachy look. I hope you’ll have some fun with it too.

Classic Chrome film recipe with cream tones and deep contrast

Marcel Fraij is a photographer and educator based in the Netherlands. He has an inspiring style, often including detail views of textures, forms and partly blurred figures. His themed galleries are especially improssive, and you can explore some of these on his photography and recipes site.

I’m a big fan, so it was great to chat with Marcel recently about a new recipe of his. As you’ll see below, it has a distinctive creamed and contrasty Classic Chrome style, that is particular suited to holiday and vacation shots, or scenes including wood and sand textures.

Marcel suggested that I share this recipe here with you, and I am very happy to be able to do so. The guest recipes on this site provide another perspective on film recipe looks, and I’m excited to add Re-Analog to the collection.

When I travel into a city, I still have my photography itch, and will often go for an early walk from my hotel before breakfast. Golden hour in an urban environment is often quite different in feel to the mornings and evenings in my usual forests and country lanes, so I’ve put together a recipe for such occasions.

I’ve looked to captured the harder brightness of a city environment, along with the creamy Kodak vibes of the Portra style. The result is this urbex film recipe for taking city walks and street photos in a Kodak Portra style.

Film simulation recipe with a hybrid Kodak Gold – Fuji Gold look

A little warmth can add to the mood of a photo, bringing out a cosy feel and making magic hour shots even more magical. That’s the spirit of this warm toned film recipe, that shoots a Fuicolor look in the spirit of Kodak Gold film.

The Fujicolor Gold recipe brings together the Classic Negative base, that suits a Fujicolor film look so well, with the warmth and soft tone of a Kodak Gold look for X-Trans IV cameras.

The warmth isn’t overpowering, and in part this is kept in check by my intention for this recipe to be shot one or two stops overexposed, +1/3 or +2/3.

With all of this coming together, the soft tones and mid amount of warmth, means that this recipe can be used anytime. It will deliver for you in a wide range of conditions.

However, the golden hour is when this recipe really comes to life, so do try it when the sun is low in the sky, either in the mornings or evenings, to enjoy the ‘gold’ of Fujicolor Gold as it was intended.

Classic Negative film recipe with golden orange tones in the golden hour

Here’s a film recipe that loves the golden hour so much, that it brings the glorious golden tones to any time of day. The base film simulation is Classic Negative, and much like the Xylochrome film recipe, this one was created as an experiment that uses a sliding scale of settings, starting from a 6540K colour balance.

Depending on the conditions, this recipes brings a subtle peach tone to neutrals, or a vivid tangerine hue, which shows most often at sunset. Which you get isn’t quite as unexpected as the infinite improbablility drive, so you can relax and enjoy a relaxing warmth to any image set taken with this recipe.

Soft tones film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV with Eterna setting

This film recipe uses the Eterna / Cinema film simulation with a warm white balance and softened highlights. It brings a mellow warmth to your photos and when shooting outdoors, it works well at controlling bright conditions, and adding a warmer mood to cloudy days.

This has some of the softest contrast of my Eterna recipes, and with the 5, -5 WB shift, it features a retro tone, bringing out the brown green tint of Eterna in the images. In fact, only Ultrasoft 77 is softer.

In a twist, this recipe uses clarity and sharpness for crisp edges, so you get soft tones, but sharp images. I like this look and enjoy how it works with the low contrast. However, you may prefer to stay softer and more natural, so this is shown as optional in the details below.

Here’s another example of why I love Eterna Bleach Bypass. There’s something about the punchy depth, mixed with pale colour, that gives a unique style that I really enjoy.

The simulation lends itself well to application of bold colour shifts to give casts and hues across a selection of images. These flavourings are less effective with other simulations, giving some new creative options for those of us with Bleach Bypass on our cameras.

In some scenes, such as those with low sun or mist, there is a look that reminds me of some video games, like Red Dead Redemption or Fallout.

Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation recipe for creamy tone winter photos

Here’s a recipe for creative shooting with a muted tones style which emphasises the browns and creams in your images. This makes it a great choice for beaches, winter woodlands and capturing old buildings or wooden subjects. I’ve named it Driftwood because, for me, it shares a palette with the bleached wooden pieces you find washed up on the shore.

Shooting with a recipe like this gives a unique look and feel that generates a stylised image with muted tones and deep contrast. For single images, the style is dramatic and interesting, and for a series, it generates a compelling tone across a set.

Note that this recipe uses Eterna Bleach Bypass as the base simulation, which makes it compatible with the newer Fujifilm cameras only.

X-Trans IV Eterna film recipe for a cinematic style look like the Old West

I used to travel to the Western USA for work, and thinking back, there were so many amazing landscapes and scenes I would have enjoyed photographing with my Fujifilm camera. So, although I’m not there in person nowadays, I’ve made this recipe with the Old West in mind.

The recipe is based on Eterna for a cinematic feel, and uses a nostalgic warm colour shift to evoke the dusty Western feel. Heavy grain is in use too for another layer of ageing, giving a soft toned grainy image, a bit like older images from the American West.
