Nostalgic flat tones film recipe with a cinematic Fujifilm feel

You may have seen in some recent film recipes that I took a trip to Paris this Summer to watch the Olympic Games Tennis. I created a number of new recipes that would hopefully suit the hard light conditions, perhaps work well in the streets of Paris, and bring something uniquely Fujifilm to my images.

Of all the recipes that I explored, this one is perhaps the most characterful, with a strongly nostgalgic vibe, very flat tones for a soft look, and warmth in a subtle way. It’s a cinematic look film recipe with a summer vibe. If you’re guessing ahead, you’ll know that the Eterna Cinema film simulation shares many of these features, and that is indeed the base for this recipe.

The real magic though comes from the somewhat unusual colour balance based on a Fluorescent setting. There are three of these, which are intended to bring artificial light back to something more neutral, but I personally find that they can be a wonderful starting point for a film recipe. Matched to Eterna with its mellow undertones, we get a unique new look.

I quickly became addicted to using this, and took all sorts of photos before my trip to Paris, and whilst there I took my personal favourite image from the tennis tourament. This shot of Iga Swiatek preparing to serve had such a retro feel to it that I just love, but it also shows me that tennis is an individual sport with the player alone in the arena battling for the win.

A soft and cinematic film simulation look for Summer days and sunshine

Here’s a film recipe creation that started life as a glass of wine. The Albariño wine hails from Northwest Spain and Portugal and is a crisp and fresh tasting wine that I enjoy on occasion. As well as a lovely taste, it has a pale colour that is atonce cream and pale green in subtle ways. Now you begin to see where the film recipe idea is coming from, a look that in part, captures the character of this flavour and look.

At the heart of the recipe is the Eterna Cinema film simulation, which produces a lower contrast look that can be cinematic and soft look at the same time. But for this look, it’s the character of greens that with Eterna have a green brown tone which I am particularly fond of.

For this film recipe, I wanted to build on these characteristics to produce a look that I could use in a range of weather and light conditions, with warmth and nostalgia to the resulting pictures. The white balance, boosted highlights and shadows, and the use of a -2 setting for clarity, all work together towards this goal.

The result is comforting and calm, which works well for outdoor shots and my tendency to use the golden hour. It’s compatible will all X-Trans IV and V cameras, so you can give it a go on X100V or VI, X-T4 or 5 and X-T30II or 50 and many other cameras in the Fujifilm range.

Summer vibes film recipe with a warm and cosy feel

Summer days can spark creativity, and at the least, get you out and about with your camera in the sunny weather. This is a film recipe for these warm days, with a cosy look that is dreamy and soft and set to make the most of golden sunny light.

There are already several takes on this concept that are available on this and other sites. You may already know of Vibrant Arizona and Bright Summer from Fuji X Weekly, or perhaps Classic Cuban Negative by Osan Bilgi. On this site, Summer Story and Kodak Portra 66 are also good choices.

But, as we all know, there are a huge range of styles possible with our excellent Fujifilm cameras, so there’s always room for one more. So here we have another contender. Daydream Believer looks to capture the summer vibe with hazy softness from -4 clarity and sunny colour from (ironically perhaps) the Shady colour balance.

Note that if the -4 clarity makes you uncomfortable (as I know it can for some photographers), then this recipe will also be just as happy with a mist filter to give a similar dreamy feel.

Recreating the classic Kodak film look with Fujifilm X-Trans IV

I’ve been spending time on Threads recently, and enjoying the posts of some film photographers. I like to see how different film stocks render and think about capturing the vibe in a film recipe.

The various Kodak Portra films are very popular, and I see 400 and 800 a lot. A little less often, I come across images with Portra 160, and these inspired me to have a fresh try at captuing this classic Kodak look.

I personally feel that you can creatie a Kodak Portra style with several of the film simulations in our cameras. I’ve used Classic Chrome a few times, Classic Negative and even Pro Neg too (see bottom of the page), but for this soft film style, my starting point was Eterna.

Some Portra recipes push the creamy tones aesthetic quite hard, but I don’t always see this in scans of actual Portra photos. So this recipe is another contribution to the growing list of Portra looks, but it’s one that I really enjoy, and feel captures the Kodak Portra look quite closely.

Natural colour film simulation recipe with rich colour and smooth tone

The Eterna Cinema film simulation is possibly my favourite, giving a soft low contrast and cinematic feel. I love the smoothness of the tones it produces, and I’ve used it make a number of cinematic film recipes.

I often pair this with muted colours and warm colour shifts, but in this recipe, I’ve taken a different approach. I’ve chosen a natural colour balance that works well in a wide range of outdoor situations. This makes it versatile thoughout the day including golden hour, bright daylight and moody weather, such as fog or rain.

The second break with tradition is to boost the saturation, pushing this all the way to +4. The result delivers some wonderful results, with some of the nicest greens of any recipe and beautiful blues as well.

As for the name, I felt that this recipe would be a perfect parter for a trip to Norway, capturing both the moody forests and pretty red houses that dot the stunning coastline. I’ve not been of course, but for an inspirational theme, it felt like a good fit.

Instagram inspired film simulation recipe using Eterna for warm muted images

Do you follow inspiring photographers on social media, and want to achieve a similar look in your Fujifilm photography? I’m often inspired, and will try and make a recipe to get a similar look.

One such photographer is Gareth Llewellyn, known as withgar on both Instagram and Threads, and in his images there’s a characterful warm and muted look.

I love this, and so I’ve made this muted tone film recipe based on this inspiration.

My recipe is close to some of his images, but of course it isn’t an exact match.

So, being similar but different, leads to this recipe name, similar but different to his handle.

Wigan Pier is a versatile and forgiving look that softens extreme light and works especially well in soft light, such as in the golden hour.

I’ve been testing it a lot over recent months and I’ve come to find it a favourite new look, bringing cosy and cinematic tones to my photos, and making me feel at least a little way towards achieving a social meadia winning look of my own!

Eterna Cinema film simulation recipe for capturing autumn fall colours and golden hour

When thinking about photographing Autumn colour / Fall color there are two likely directions you may be drawn too. The first is to look to emphasise the rich orange and reds, especially in sunshine, by using a warm tone and strong saturation. The other, is to work with the softer light and bring out a mellow atmosphere. This film recipe takes the warm color tone approach, using enhanced colour, but retains the generally cinematic balance of Eterna to prevent images from becoming overly false looking.

In this cinematic take on the autumn season I’ve taken the Eterna Cinema film simulation, one that already has a mellowness to it’s green and brown tones, and tuned it further for autumnal scenes.

Eterna simulation film recipe for a warm muted look inspired by the Starfield game

From time to time, I like to make a film recipe based on a current trend. I share these in the Film Recipes Facebook Group and, most often, they’re a bit of fun for a short period of time, and then I move on.

The release of the Starfield video game caught my attention, and as it was being explored, players began to share images, such as this one of a space ship using the in game photo mode.

I loved the look, and thought that the Eterna film simulation could probably produce a soft tones and muted colors style that was similar. I did this, with the details below, and shared it in the group. The respose from members was so encouraging, that I decided to explore it further and take images with it over the coming days. So, now it’s moved up to a ‘full’ recipe on this site, for everyone to enjoy.

The style is very soft, so it suits certain conditions better than others. I enjoy using it in bright but soft light, such as around golden hour, or when it’s hazy or misty. The style is so gentle, that it might also transfer to emotional portraits too, especially if shot in sunlight or softer outdoor lighting.

Warm and hazy film simulation recipe with Eterna and negative clarity

I originally developed this recipe in the early Summer, when warm weather made the air feel heavy with humidity and a hazy look seems to magnify the mood. I’m not entirely sure why I never published the recipe back then, but I have since rediscovered it and given it a new test in other condistions.

The recipe takes the mellow tones of Eterna film simulation with a strongly nostalgic colourshift. To this I have added further softness with a misty fuzz from -4 clarity. This acts like a mist filter, so if you wish, you can use one of those instead, but this recipe is intended to be seen with the softness of negative clarity.

This recipe certainly is a mood magnifier, and is especially useful when the sun is low and ther weather warm. For dreamy Summer afternoons it is perfect, and it is especially effective in the golden hour. I also suggest one or two stops of over-exposure which will bring some highlight burn into the overall look.
