A deep tones film recipe using Classic Chrome simulation and dark shadows

Based in Morocco, Mehdi Berrada is an architect and Fujifilm photographer who shoots stylish images with his X100V. His film recipe, Yakisugi has been receiving lots of positive reaction, but had no web page with the details. So, here we have the Yakisugi film recipe, by Mehdi Berrada.

Yakisugi, if you were curious, is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation that involves flame treating the outer layer. The resulting colour palette is dark and charred, and this character comes through in the muted tones of this film recipe.

Dreamy creamy Eterna film simulation recipe for X-Trans 4 cameras

I am often inspired by the great work of others, and in this case, I was really taken by the tones of a recipe shared by Willard Largueza Macay. He had captured wonderful images at the Taste of Lawrence Festival, a food festival in Ontario, Canada. I loved the yellow tones and other worldly skies.

When I tested his settings, I saw a different result, perhaps because it was developed on X-T3 and there are differences between camera models. I found that adjustments were needed on my X-S10 to achieve a similar tone and feel. But, after after a few tests and some do-overs, I settled on this wonderfully creamy and atmospheric recipe that I call Festival Cream.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans 4 in Golden Hour

Some of the best light for taking photographs is found during the golden hour around sunrise and sunset. The softness of the light, coupled with the longer shadows and warmer hues, make taking beautiful photos a lot easier.

Photographer Kebs Cayabyab, has developed some recipes on his YouTube channel, including a wonderfully warm Provia recipe called Dela Rosa (2nd recipe in the clip) that he uses in his late afternoon street photography.

I’ve enjoyed his recipe, and in experimenting with it, developed a variant that uses Classic Negative with a couple of stops of overexposure. I call this version Rosa Negative, and like Keb’s original, it’s wonderful in golden hour.

Some things seem to be made to go together, and in our world of film simulations and recipes, it’s Kodak Portra and fading Americana. Think of an abandoned gas station on a dusty desert highway. Creamy tones and washed out colours give a nostalgic feel. It’s the retro look of a trip along Route 66.

I haven’t been to the American West in about a decade, so I developed this recipe closer to home. I took it out and about on a city walk in Winchester and on some walks in the New Forest.

Fujifilm X-Trans 4 film recipe for a Kodak Portra 400 style

Kodak Portra film was hugely popular, and with its different versions, came to be a favourite for many 35mm photographers, each using the one they liked the best. Now, with the magic of Fujifilm film recipes, there are a selection of film recipes to help produce a look that is close to different editions of the Portra film.

I’ve been testing out a recipe for Portra 400 adapted from the Fuji X Weekly recipe by Fujifilm Film Simulations Group user Tomas Tuoma. His Kodak Portra adaptation is one that I really enjoy.

I tested it on a cloudy day, and found the colours bold and amazing, but for my preferred take on the feel of KP400, I wanted a little more grain and a little less punch. So, here we are with a couple more tweaks in this recipe and now it’s Kodak Portra Grainy.

And, since first publishing this page, I’ve shot in full summer sunshine, and added some of those photos further down the page.

Fuji film simulation recipe for X-Trans IV cameras using Eterna Cinema

One of the fantastic skills of recent Fujifilm cameras, is to be able to shoot and record movies directly in the Eterna Cinema film simulation. This wonderfully soft simulation adds instant mood and sophistication to many shots.

It’s no suprise then that there are a number of excellent film recipes based on Eterna, including ones especially for night use, or that work well in the golden hour. Take a look at the YouTube videos by ‘Eteernuh’, such as Beach Day Eterna and Sunset F2 Eterna as examples.

These two in particular inspired me to experiment further with Eterna and come up with an adaptation that would bring softness and warmth to shots I took in morning and afternoon light. This recipe uses an 8000K colour temperature, and enhanced shadows to find a balance between softness and everyday usability.

A Hipstamatic inspired Fujifilm recipe for X-Trans IV with Eterna Bleach Bypass

For several years, I was an avid user of Hipstamatic on iPhone. In the boom years, the arrival of new ‘paks’ was a moment of collective excitement. Learning how to use the retro inspired options to produce different styles was a community effort, and there were thousands of people sharing the results and bouncing ideas off of eachother.

The app is still going strong around a decade later, with a dedicated user base and mind boggling number of paks and features. For me though, those early days were the best.

I gave some thought to which of those Hipstamatic looks I might be able to reproduce in a film recipe. Most are impossible, but one that can be approximated is Ray Mark II with it’s warm, almost sepia tones and desaturated look. Here is my take on it.

There’s a magical romance that surrounds Kodak Portra film, and I see photos with recipes for Portra 160, 400 or 800 about as often as anything other than Kodachrome. The film itself is beautiful, with soft warm creamy tones that are kind to faces, but also work really well in sunlight for urban, desert and nostalgia shots. Think faded Americana, and you’ve probably seen Portra.

The recipe aims to show off that creamy 160 warmth and low tonal range that makes Kodak Porta such a popular choice. I’ve kept the colour down a touch, in keeping with my perference, and taken a small grain option. It’s soft, delicate and refined.
