Shinrin Yoku, Forest Mindfulness Recipe

Classic chrome film simulation recipe for forest photography

Shinrin yoku, or forest bathing, is a mindful wellness exercise that first became popular in Japan, and then around the world. You embrace the calmness of nature and enjoy a relaxing time being in a forest or amongst nature, taking time to observe and enjoy what you see. If you haven’t heard about it, here’s a quick guide to forest bathing.

Extending your shinrin yoku experience with photography is a wonderful way to keep a record of what you see and can enhance the mindfulness and observation elements of forest bathing. As a partner to this, I’ve developed a forest friendly film recipe that works well in a wide range of wooded environments.

Be calm and allow yourself to relax, with the Shinrin Yoku film recipe

Forest Friendly Film Recipes

I live near a wonderful woodland area, New Forest National Park in the UK. This offers lots of exporation opportunities and is one reasons you see so many forest photos on these pages. For forest exploration, here are some more film recipes that work well in amongst the trees.

I’ve used the term ‘forest bathing’ ever since I first read about it in a magazine. People think I’m cuckoo when I say I’m going forest bathing (as in go for a walk in the woods).

Having doing walks here in rural northern Lanzarote but in no woods. Just lots of volcanoes, lava, palm trees, the sea and sun.

Lava bathing doesn’t have the same inviting sound to it! I’m glad you’re enjoying your holiday 🙂

I used this recipe for a 4-day (140km) hike, mostly forests and fields: it worked very well 😊
And the fact that clarity is set to none helps keeping the battery 😉
Thank you for creating this preset!

You’re welcome. Thanks for using it on your hike. I’m happy (and relieved) that it worked well for you 😊

Unrelated to this Shinrin Yoku film simulation, would you know a BW one with a similar “mood” as in “About the pink sky” movie? Picture from IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1890472/mediaviewer/rm3254628352/

I like the image, but mono is not really my expertise. I don’t think I have anything that matches, so the two sites to check are Fuji X Weekly -https://fujixweekly.com/fujifilm-x-trans-iv-recipes/ – and Kevin Mullins – https://www.f16.click/blog/best-fujifilm-jpeg-settings

Thank you Justin. I haven’t find any simulation close enough on Ritchie’s website last time I checked. Kevin’s simulations are great and some are already on my “to try” list 😉

  3. […] I was eager to take the X100, as I’d preloaded it with a recipe from http://film.recipes – called “Shinrin Yoku’. (You can download it here: https://film.recipes/2022/10/19/shinrin-yoku-forest-mindfulness-recipe/) […]
