Classic Chrome film recipes designed for winter days with a subtle cool tone shift

When the weather is colder, you may wish to show the mood of a scene without the warm colour shift that many film recipes offer. For these wintry days and cold crisp mornings, a cooler colour balance makes for a film recipe kind to blue tones that doesn’t remove the frosty feel.

At the heart of this film recipe is a somewhat uncommon colour balance, using the Underwater preset as a starting point. This setting was added to our cameras for the rather unlikely chance that we would go swimming with them. For many of us, it is therefore left unused.

For frosty, misty and cold clear days, this balance is actually quite useful, and with just a gentle adjustment, and a dash of Colour Chrome Blue we have a great look for winter. For my personal takses, I have softened the contrast slightly, and nudged sturation down one step too.

The result is a versatile film recipe, ideal for winter days, but happy in a wide range of conditions, especially where a warm colour balance is a distraction.

Bleach Bypass film simulation recipe for a nostalgic prints look

Let’s wind back the decades with this nostalgic film recipe with a strong retro feel. It differs from vintage looks by not having an especially warm tone, but still having an aged look like prints from a simpler camera from bygone days.

This film recipe is built from layers, each adding to the overall look. First up is the Eterna Bleach Bypass simulation which washes out the colour. The next layer is the colour balance, which mimics a fading image, like a print from many years ago. Lastly, negative clarity is used to soften the overall image and add a vintage look to out of focus areas.

I know that many people prefer not to use the clarity function because of the saving delay that it causes. Often, I’ll suggest using a physical filter as an option, but for Retroscope, I do recommend using negative clarity as part of the aesthetic.

Now to the results where we can see how this recipe looks. I’ve really enjoyed using it, either for a nostalgic feel like old prints, of where a muted soft look enhances the feel of the images, such as on a foggy day, or when the light is pale and soft already.

Eterna simulation film recipe for a warm muted look inspired by the Starfield game

From time to time, I like to make a film recipe based on a current trend. I share these in the Film Recipes Facebook Group and, most often, they’re a bit of fun for a short period of time, and then I move on.

The release of the Starfield video game caught my attention, and as it was being explored, players began to share images, such as this one of a space ship using the in game photo mode.

I loved the look, and thought that the Eterna film simulation could probably produce a soft tones and muted colors style that was similar. I did this, with the details below, and shared it in the group. The respose from members was so encouraging, that I decided to explore it further and take images with it over the coming days. So, now it’s moved up to a ‘full’ recipe on this site, for everyone to enjoy.

The style is very soft, so it suits certain conditions better than others. I enjoy using it in bright but soft light, such as around golden hour, or when it’s hazy or misty. The style is so gentle, that it might also transfer to emotional portraits too, especially if shot in sunlight or softer outdoor lighting.

Acheive a cinematic look and feeel with Classic Chrome on X100V

Achieving a cinematic look with a Fujifilm camera is made much easier by the presence of the built in Eterna Cinema simulation. But, what if you’re not into Eterna, and prefer Classic Chrome? Can a cinematic look be created with this simulation too?

That’s the challenge I’ve been tackling in this film simulation recipe. I wanted to achieve a tone that was evocative of moody and intelligent cinema, perhaps in a movie that takes it’s time to set a scene with some atmospheric shots of scenery before bringing you into a scene.

With Classic Chrome and some adjustments to the tone cure and colour balance shift, I found that I could capture this feeling in a ready to go film recipe, that give a cine feel, straight out of camera. I hope you enjoy the result.

I’ve been experimenting in X RAW Studio a fair bit recently, as it’s a great way to try out new setting combinations and develop film recipes. I like to try colour balance settings away from my usual comfort zone, and see how these look on different RAW files.

It was some of this experimenting that led me to this recipe. It’s base is Classic Chrome, which is boosted with +3 colour and shifted into a slightly pink-purple tone with a +4, +4 adjustment.

I found that this candy toned hint was especially well suited to sunrise and sunset images, with an etheral fantasy like quality. When experimenting with some saved RAW files, I also loved the look on frosty winter scenes too. I’ve provided a good range of image samples below, so you can see if you like it, and of course the settings to give it a try for yourself.

I think black and white photography is hard. There’s an art to it, that I just can’t quite master. I think it comes from a different way of seeing things, and having trained my eye to hunt down colour shots, I don’t feel in tune with mono.

So, when it comes to making mono film recipes, I tend to look at ways to use a mono setting with the style of photography I am comfortable with. These are mono recipes for the rest of us!

In Mono 42, the look is a soft and faded one, with compressed tone and a gentle retro colour wash. It has a nostalgic feel, and with the lifted shadows, it feels like printed images from books and magazines, rather than the strong contrast B&W you’d find in a gallery.

I grew up in a small village in a rural area and I always enjoyed the way that farmland changed through the seasons. There was the season of baby animals, starting with the lambs, and working through pigs and cows.

As the spring turned into summer, crops would be bursting into flower and become heavy with seed. My favourites were the wheat, barley and oat fields with their change from green to gold, followed by the hot and hard work of the harvest.

I still enjoy a visit to a farm, and will often wander along field edges to photograph crops in themorning or evening light. You’ll maybe have seen images on this site from some of those walks.

For the creamy tones of summer crops and a bright blue sky with fluffy clouds, the Eterna Bleach Bypass simulation is a great choice for impactful images with a muted colour tone. This is the starting point for the Cereal KIller recipe, which is tuned to suit photography outdoors, landscapes and rural and small town scenes.

My very first film recipe creation was a Classic Negative film simulation recipe called Soft Negative, which has remained a favourite of mine ever since. It has a softness and warmth that suits my photography style, and the retro elements of the Classic Negative simulation.

In all the film recipes that I’ve produced since, I’ve not quite eclipsed this early one as a favourite. There have been some close seconds, like Kojak Gold, my 200th recipe, and Childhood Vacation with a washed out look that’s great fun to use.

However, I think at last, I might have a new favourite film recipe. It’s made with Classic Negative again and packed full of the character and style that I love. May I present to you, Superia Loco, a low contrast Fujiilm Superia look. It’s my new no. 1 and I really hope that you enjoy it too.

Eteran film simulation recipe for capturing summer scenes with character

In the strong light of summer, a relaxed film recipe that can tame the harsh light is a useful partner. In these conditions, I like to capture the warm and leisurely mood of the summer months, but I also want to be able to shoot throughout the day, rather than necessarily have to wait until the golden hour.

This film recipe, designed for August and the summer, uses that most tolerant of film simulations, Eterna Cinema. This does the hard work of taming the contrast, and to this base, I’ve added a characterful warmth, from a 1, -6 shift from the auto colour balance. To magnify this, colour is uplifted to the maximum, which for Eterna, is still soft and not distracting.

So here it the result, a welcoming and characterful summer film recipe, that makes an excellent travel companion and top choice for lazy warm afternoons and evenings.
