Eterna Bleach Bypass film recipe with minimised saturation for a metal tone look

One of the great things about the Eterna Bleach Bypass fim simulation is the muted low saturation tone. This adds a drama to images, and with adjustments to the colour balance, can be tuned to give a wide variety of moods.

In this recipe, the mood is a cool blue one, with a metallic tone that is almost grey in some situations, and a faded blue in others. The effect is an extreme one, changing the original scene dramatically, but it’s a powerful effect and makes for a really interesting image style.

I find it works best with bright light, or with light on the subject. It tames even the most extreme full sunlight, and has a metallic tone that removes almost all warm tones for that titanium look.

A Classic Chrome film silmulation recipe with a 10,000K colour temperature base

It doesn’t seem long ago that I was feeling happy that 100 people had joined the Film Recipes Facebook Group and wondering if that was about as far as it would go. Well, we just passed through 10,000 members, and it’s still growing.

I started the group as a way to share the new film recipes that I added to this site, and as a place for film recipe fans to come together and ask questions and show their sample images. Bringing people together, the group is also the main place that people join in the Film Recipes challenge, that runs every couple of weeks. Details for this are in the panel below.

For this recipe, I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could make an everyday film recipe from the extreme 10,000K color temperature at the top of the scale in my camera. This is a very warm setting, and is almost tangerine orange without some taming, so it’s paired with heavy a correctional shift that brings it back to something more normal.

The result is a Classic Chrome with a warm toned mellow look, that is in part nostalgic and part film like. I think the look sits somewhere on the Kodak spectrum, sitting between Kodachrome and Kodak Portra. I’m really pleased with how it came out and happy to share it as a little celebration recipe as we pass the milestone of 10k members.

Fujifilm simulation film recipe for a flat tone matte look like Kodak 35mm prints

This film recipe began life as an attempt to match a look I had seen with 35mm film photos taken on Kodak film. I had really liked the low contrast matte look, and wanted to be able to shoot with something similar on my Fujifilm camera.

Whilst this recipe does capture the flat look and colour tones I had seen, it was very specific to a single set of samples I had seen. So, rather than name it after the Kodak film stock, I decided to tweak it some more and embrace the flat matte look.

What we have then, is a general Kodak film-like look, reminiscent of some 35mm photography, with a muted tone and soft, matte like feel.

The base simulation is Classic Chrome, with a color chrome effect and small shift from the shade/cloudy colour balance. Shadows and highlights are both compressed to the -2 setting.

Like all the film recipes on this site, it was designed for recent X-Trans IV cameras, but with the exception of color chrome blue, this recipe is widely compatible with easy adaptation for older cameras too.

A natural colour soft tones film recipe using Pro Neg Standard for X-Trans IV

Pro Neg Standard is a film simulation that provides good colour accuracy across the spectrum, and works well for shooting portraits. I’ve made a number of film recipes with it, and enjoy the easy going character it has.

For the Pale Ale film recipe, I explored a variety of colour balance shifts, in search of a warm, slightly nostalgic but natural look that worked well with landscape subjects. After considerable experimentation and adjustment, I have settled on this shift from the Fluorescent 2 white balance base.

The result is a soft tones look, which captures the retro vibe of Fujifilm simulation shooting. It presents natural scenes in a tastefully calm way, without too much saturation or contrast, and with a warm nostalgic tint for added atmosphere.

Soft tones film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV with Eterna setting

This film recipe uses the Eterna / Cinema film simulation with a warm white balance and softened highlights. It brings a mellow warmth to your photos and when shooting outdoors, it works well at controlling bright conditions, and adding a warmer mood to cloudy days.

This has some of the softest contrast of my Eterna recipes, and with the 5, -5 WB shift, it features a retro tone, bringing out the brown green tint of Eterna in the images. In fact, only Ultrasoft 77 is softer.

In a twist, this recipe uses clarity and sharpness for crisp edges, so you get soft tones, but sharp images. I like this look and enjoy how it works with the low contrast. However, you may prefer to stay softer and more natural, so this is shown as optional in the details below.

Eterna Bleach Bypass for a forest mood that works well in winter sunlight

Winter is one of my favourite seasons for photography, with interesting bare natural shapes, muted colour palettes and the additional mood of frosts and low winter sunlight.

Photography in these conditions is perfectly suited to the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation, which embraces these characteristics in a contrasty but muted style.

I do feel that owners of older Fujifilm cameras are missing a treat here, because Bleach Bypass is so unique, but for those of us that have access to it, this recipe set-up is a favourite option for wintry walks in the woods.

As well as Bleach Bypass, this recipe uses negative clarity for a hazy effect, adding a little extra something, much like the Wychwood Hobgoblin beers, which are another favourite of mine at this time of year.

Watery pale blue tones film simulation recipe using Eterna Bleach Bypass

I’ve been having something of a run of creativity with Eterna Bleach Bypass recently, exploring all softs of colour shifts and creative angles. I’m so in love with the range of striking looks that can be created with this film simulation, I just had to share this one with you too.

I was inspired the colour of frost in pre-dawn light (often called the blue hour). There’s a pale blue green to the hue to it and a desaturated palette. In this film recipe, I’ve tried to extend this soft teal palette into a film recipe, great for watery scenes, low winter sunlight, and whenevery you want an aqua tone look.

Muted tones film recipe using the Eterna Bleach Bypass simulation

The winter weather in the UK has been inspiring me to wrap up warm and shoot some images in the cold and frosty conditions. This weather has a naturally muted tone with pale colours and lots of white. Working with the conditions has helped me to develop a number of Winter film recipes, including this one, which has a mineral silvery tone that reminds me of Welsh slate.

The base simulation is Eterna Bleach Bypass, available on the newer Fujifilm cameras only. It’s a strong favourite of mine and I really enjoy the striking low saturation styles that it can be nudged into making.

An instant film recipe with an expired look, for X-Trans IV cameras

Here’s an interesting film recipe for exploring the instant film aesthetic that just goes to show what’s possible with film simulations in our Fujifilm cameras. This recipe brings together a quartz pink tinted analog look with the imperfections of low-cost instant photography. It reminds me of Instamatic or Polaroid films, or pocket cameras of decades past when prints were developed by a budget lab.

The recipe is based on Classic Negative, manipulated with colour balance shifts and minimal saturation. I love the look this produces especially when used in bright light, and shooting towards the light for a heavy blast of lens flare. I’d imagine it would be a fun recipe to sty for a stylised fashion shoot, or a 70s theme party, or whenever you want to try an expired instant film look.

Eterna based film simulation recipe to mimic the look on an expired film

I love the faded look of an expired film, and even more so when there’s a wash out colour cast that leaks across the images. You see this effect sometime when a long out of date 35mm film is developed and a hazy lomo style image is revealed.

In this film recipe, I wanted to create something similar to looks I’d seen and admired, with a green/brown cast and low contrast and saturation. Eterna was the natural choice for a base, because it already shares some of these qualities in it’s tone and contrast.

The more that I’ve used this recipe, the more I have come to love it. It often feels like it has jumped straight from the cinema screen, and has a mellow aged tone that makes me want to use it more and more.

Clarity and CC Blue are used in this recipe, so newer X-Trans IV and V cameras will be able to use it in full. For older sensors, skipping those two settings will give a similar look that should still have lots of character.
