Oceanic 815 for Deep Ocean Blues

A lot of my film recipes feature soft tones or faded tones for a nostalgic look. Sometimes however, it’s good to have some deeper tones to help style the image in a more impactful way.

I developed this recipe for a specific purpose. To shoot images of the ocean from up on the cliffs above. It’s aim is to enhance the blues of the sea and add some stylish contrast to a scene. It should be great for beach holidays and coastal walks. Just don’t get LOST.

Fujicolor Natura with Soft Teal Tones

X-Trans IV Fujifilm film simulation recipe inspired by Fujicolor Natura 1600

This film recipe is one of the very first that I adapted to suit my personal soft tones style. The orginal for this recipe is by E. Fung and called Natura 1600. I was taken by the sparkling clarity and colour tones of that recipe, and followed its developments into a second version, where there was also a suggestion to try a new colour shift. Adding this 1, -6 shift brought teal tones to life and added a wonderful new character.

This insipred me to play with the settings further, and my adjustments led me to this version, which works really well in sunlight with a blue sky, just like E. Fung’s original recipe.

In my adaptation, slight underexposure and a softened shadows are key steps to get the soft toned teal blues and greens which characterise this recipe. Try to include the sky, or reflections of the sky in the images if you want the same tones to show through.

In my experiments to find new and unique styles, I’ve been testing different colour tone monochrome recipes. One that I’ve come to really enjoy is this cyan toned style based on the Acros film simulation. Although it doesn’t have any real link with the Cyanotype style, I love the name, so I stuck with it!

This is a simple recipe that is designed to bring out the character of Fujifilm Classic Chrome. It loves sunny days and is great with blues and greens especially. It’s crisp and bright, and for me it feels very Fuji, so I simply named it Fujichrome.

Vintage Kodachrome film recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

The classic Kodachrome films are much loved, and with adjustments to the Classic Chrome film simulation, images that reflect this era can be readily achieved on Fujifilm X-series cameras.

Early Kodachrome films had creamy skintones and delicious blues, giving them a character that is deeply connected to that era. Anything with creams, browns and blues looked fantastic on 60s and 70s Kodachrome film.

My Kodachrome Classic recipe seeks to emulate the spirirt of these early photos, with a slide film feel and richly retro tone like a classic 60s and 70s Kodachrome photo. I find that it loves bright conditions and blue skies, so it would be a perfect companion on travel and vacations.

The Eterna Cinema film simulation produces warm low contrast images by default, but with some increases to the tone curve and adjustments to the colour balance, you can achieve some interesting and striking results.

In this recipe, which I called Eterna Lakeside, the adjustments have a particular effect that brings out the blues in an image, enhancing the sky, and relections on water.

Classic Chrome film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

Cinematic tones can be many things, but for me it means a low saturation smoothness with a subtle retro tint. This recipe gives you cinemtatic tone with the classic chrome simulation, so it’s called Cinechrome.

As well as softness from reduced saturation and low contrast, this film recipe has a 5800 base temperature, with a subtle blue colour balance. This cools the image a little, giving an aged nostalgic feel to pictures without appearing too creamy. Grain is off for a clean, smooth look.

Fujifilm simulation recipe for a cool tone Agfa style for X-Trans IV cameras

On clear blue sky sunny days, adding warmth with a mellow recipe can sometimes alter the mood of a scene to a point where the spirit of the capture is lost. For days like this, especially with big skies or the sea in the picture, I find a cooler blue tone look to give a more effective result.

This film recipe started life inspired by the Agfa recipes at Fuji X Weekly. I wanted to capture some of the blue tint, but adapt the tones and saturation to better suit my peronal style of a softer tone look.

The style is useful throughout the year, but especially effective in the frosty conditions of winter. The tone compliments the natural light and emphasises the colder weather feeling.
