    Manila Sun

Manila Sun, Urban Eterna by Grant Teng

Rich toned film simulation recipe using Eterna for X-T4, X100V, X-E4 and X-S10

One of the real treats in making this film recipes site, is when I get to share a guest recipe with you. I really love this one, and I’m so happy to include it.

Grant Teng lives in Manila, Philippines, and has developed a rich and characterful film recipe that uses Eterna Cinema. He’s chosen a fixed colour temperature, which suits outdoor and sunny photography, and keeps a consistent look across images if you include interior shots in a series.

Additional character is added with strong grain, strong chrome effects, pushed highlights and +2 sharpness. I love the result, which you can see below in these photos taken in the Bonifacio Global City area of Metro Manila. As well as the lush feel from the recipe, Grant has taken some of the images with a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 on his X-T4.

    Alchemy Cinematic

Alchemy Cinematic, for Urban Soft Tones

Eterna film simulation recipe with urban cool tones for Fujiflim cameras

The Eterna Cinema film simulation is a wonderful choice for soft tones photography, but the green-brown tone of the base simulation doesn’t always give me the mood effect that I’m after. For something a little cooler, perhaps metallic even, I like to make adjustments.

So, for explorations in suburbia, industry parks or for a cool tone to street photography, we have Alchemy Cinematic. This recipe turns gold into steel (in colour tones at least) and works really well with stone and metal. I find it a good choice to bringing smooth metallic tones to city exploration photo walks.

    Vintage Mood

Vintage Mood, for a Nostalgic Soft Look

Eterna based film simulation recipe for a retro look with Fujifilm cameras

There are quite a variety of nostalgic film recipes on this site, with different takes on what a ‘vintage look’ is. Almost all of them do share a warm colour balance, sometimes slight, but often quite strong. This recipe has a balance shift on the very warm side, but with Eterna as a base, the result is a distinctly retro looking tone.

As well as this retro colour shift, there is light grain, boosted shadows and highlights and softness from a negative sharpness and negative clarity setting. The end result is noticably different to Eterna Nostalgia, a similarly themed Eterna recipe, but both of them have a nostalgic vibe of different types.

Ultrasoft 77, for Mellow Low Contrast Style

Film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-series with Eterna Cinema

Soft tones photography is definitely my preferred style, and you’ll know this from the type of recipes I make on this site. For this one, I decided to see how far I could push it, and still get pleasing results. So, we have Ultrasoft 77, a warm and cosy Eterna film recipe, with the flattest possible tone curve for super soft tones.

This film recipe is useful when you want to tame harsh lighting conditions, and you can get interesting results on rainy days too. But, Ultrasoft 77 really comes into its own during the softer light of golden hour. You can achieve some very delicate results in the first and last hours of the day.

Urbex Cinematic, Eterna for Urban Exploration

Eterna simulation recipe for urbex, industrial and city photography

Urban exploration photography is a growing trend, where you take a photowalk through a city or other built up area and look out for interesting photo subjects. These can be buildings, highways, rail tracks, fences, trucks or industrial buildings. Images often include a lot of grey or materials like metal and concrete.

I’ve used Eterna film simulation as the base for this recipe, with soft tones, but also a built in green tint to neutrals that adds a lot of cinematic character, and works well with greys and neturals for a muted urbex look.

Great Plains, Eterna Recipe for Landscapes

Soft tone landscape film recipe using the Eterna film simulation

The soft mellow tones of the Eterna film simulation lend themselves to natural subjects, and I have made several recipes using it already (scroll to bottom). I might have stopped there, but I was inspired by some urban photos posted by Viktor Gerasimovski that have a wonderfully stylish mood.

Using his settings as a starting point, I began test shots, and with a few adjustments and start overs, I settled on a recipe that I found I was using most for landscapes and natural scenes. There is a lovely softness to it, and a pleasant muted tone to greens, which I find gives the overall image a relaxed and calming feel, even in bright conditions.

This recipe does use a fixed colour temperature, which might limit its use to daytime, but it’s a good companion when outdoors and definitely worth a try.

Festival Cream, for the Hazy Days of Summer

Dreamy creamy Eterna film simulation recipe for X-Trans 4 cameras

I am often inspired by the great work of others, and in this case, I was really taken by the tones of a recipe shared by Willard Largueza Macay. He had captured wonderful images at the Taste of Lawrence Festival, a food festival in Ontario, Canada. I loved the yellow tones and other worldly skies.

When I tested his settings, I saw a different result, perhaps because it was developed on X-T3 and there are differences between camera models. I found that adjustments were needed on my X-S10 to achieve a similar tone and feel. But, after after a few tests and some do-overs, I settled on this wonderfully creamy and atmospheric recipe that I call Festival Cream.

Kodak Portra film simulation recipe for Fujifillm cameras using Eterna

For this recipe, I was inspired by an Instagram that I follow, expiredbren who posts a really great set of images with Portra and Gold films, and sometimes expired rolls too.

In some of his recent images (June & July ’22), he’s been posting classic VWs, and I just love the tones of the images. This green Beetle is one of his IG shots, go follow him for more.

In this film recipe, I wanted to try and achieve a similar look, so I came up with an Eterna based set-up that I call, Aged Kodak Portra.

I’ve done some test shots in a variety of situations, and I think this recipe is at least similar to the wonderfully warm and faded look in Bren’s images.

Fujifilm X-Trans IV film simulation recipe using Eterna for mellow soft tones

The Eterna Cinema film simulation is one of my favourites, with a mellow softness that oozes cinematic character. I love the slightly green brown tint to it as well, and for this recipe, I embrace these mellow tones and make a feature of the softness.

I named this film recipe Arthouse Cinema as a reflection of the creative tones and wonderful B-roll seen in independent films. It’s got a look that’s very easy to imagine in such situations and has quickly become a regular choice in my photography. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

Eterna Nostalgia for an Old Tone Style

Film recipe for X-Trans IV using Eterna for a mellow soft look

One of the tags I follow on Insta is #oldtonecollective where you can find many inspiring images in a retro influenced style. I was scrolling through some when I got the idea to adapt one of Eteernuh‘s recipes into something nostalgic.

The Eterna Nostalgia film recipe is based on the Eterna Cinema film simulation for Fujifilm X-series cameras, and is toned with a strong +5, -5 shift to give a warm and fuzzy tone. It’s a fun recipe to shoot with, giving a mellow retro look. It’s lovely at the beach, in hazy or misty conditions, and anywhere with old things to photograph.
