Expired Geographic, Aged Eterna for Nature

Eterna based film simulation recipe to mimic the look on an expired film

I love the faded look of an expired film, and even more so when there’s a wash out colour cast that leaks across the images. You see this effect sometime when a long out of date 35mm film is developed and a hazy lomo style image is revealed.

In this film recipe, I wanted to create something similar to looks I’d seen and admired, with a green/brown cast and low contrast and saturation. Eterna was the natural choice for a base, because it already shares some of these qualities in it’s tone and contrast.

The more that I’ve used this recipe, the more I have come to love it. It often feels like it has jumped straight from the cinema screen, and has a mellow aged tone that makes me want to use it more and more.

Clarity and CC Blue are used in this recipe, so newer X-Trans IV and V cameras will be able to use it in full. For older sensors, skipping those two settings will give a similar look that should still have lots of character.

    Emergency Flare

Emergency Flare, for Maximum Light Leak

Film simulation recipe that uses settings to maximise lens flare in your photos

I love shooting into the light … I mean, I really love it. I love the blast of soft light that flares and leaks into a scene. It’s my personaly preferred style, allowing me to capture atmosphere and mood, and wash out my images in a soft tones style.

Our FujiFilm cameras are modern and amazing, and have all sorts of design effort that has gone into reducing flare, at least to the point where you need to seek it out when you want it. I built this recipe to make it a bit easier, using recipe settings to lift shadows and maximise the flare effect.

So if you really love shooting towards the light, and prefer a washed out faded look, then reach for the Emergency Flare, and fire it to get the maximum flare possible.

Winter Eterna, a Matte Cinematic Style

Eterna Cinema film simulation recipe with a low contrast faded look for winter

I recently upgraded my Mac and am enjoying the super speed it now has as it processes photos. Even X RAW Studio, which uses the camera to process images, is much faster, and whizzes along.

It was X RAW Studio that I have been using to develop this low contrast matte style with my recent winter photos. I’m pretty sure it will work all year, but at the moment we have low angle sunlight or damp and gloomy weather.

Eterna Cinema is the base simulation, and there is definitely a cinematic feel to this recipe. It’s perfect for landscapes and scenes where you want to lift the shadows and present a flatter tone, almost like a fade effect. The colour is natural, although saturation is low and the overall effect is that of soft muted tones, perfect for the winter palette found in last season’s plants and leaves.

    Mellow Magic

Mellow Magic, the Relaxed Natural Recipe

Eterna based film recipe with a relaxed and mellow natural look

I love the Eterna film simulation for the cinematic feel, but even more, I love the tone, with a mellow warmth that adds a relaxed and calming character to images.

For this film recipe, I wanted to capture this character, but escape from the low contrast of the unedited sim, and to add a little extra vibrancy to make the recipe more flexible in a wide range of situations.

I do think I’ve achieved this, and Mellow Magic can bring a relaxed but natural looking image for all sorts of subjects. For me, I’ve really found it happy for nature and landscape shots, and especially in woodlands and forests.

The one limitation that may pop up, is that Mellow Magic is set at a fixed color temperature, so indoor shots and night city shots may have an unusual cast.

Polaroid 66, for Retro Toned Memories

An Eterna film simulation recipe with an aged look, inspired by old Polaroid photos

I have a particular passion for aged look film recipes, and enjoy working with the pale and colour shifted hues of an expired look. I have several recipes on this theme already, such as Aged Kodak Portra, Aerochrome Lomo, Classic Gold and Expired Film 66.

This last one was recently compared to a Polaroid look by Marcel Fraij, when sharing some images he took using it. This triggered me to revisit the recipe and think about how I could adapt it into an aged Polaroid style. This is the result, with a look that reminds me of rediscovered photos, like you might find in a stored shoebox or somewhere in the attic.

Old West, Inspired by Western Movies

X-Trans IV Eterna film recipe for a cinematic style look like the Old West

I used to travel to the Western USA for work, and thinking back, there were so many amazing landscapes and scenes I would have enjoyed photographing with my Fujifilm camera. So, although I’m not there in person nowadays, I’ve made this recipe with the Old West in mind.

The recipe is based on Eterna for a cinematic feel, and uses a nostalgic warm colour shift to evoke the dusty Western feel. Heavy grain is in use too for another layer of ageing, giving a soft toned grainy image, a bit like older images from the American West.

    Copper, for Cinematic Autumn Tones

Eterna Cinema film simulation recipe with copper orange colour tones

In some areas Autumn has peaked and the leaves have fallen, but here in the UK, we are mid way through with some trees golden, some bare and some still to let go of the last of their summer green.

So, having been inspired to create yet another Autumn recipe, I wanted to get this up onto the site as soon as possible, so you can all see it and give it a try on your local scenery.

The recipe is based on the Eterna Cinematic film simulation, which has a mellow tone to greens and browns as a starting point. With a healthy push into warm colour balance and adjustments to the tone curve and saturation, it gives gloriously rich autumn tone. If you like to experiment, this recipe also gives a gorgeous look to evening skies as the light fades, so it can be a fun recipe to carry into the longer dark evenings.

    Wanderlust, for Travel and Exploration

Eteran film simulation recipe for X100V and other Fujifilm X-Series cameras

My project aim with Wanderlust, was to create a film recipe to take on your travels. Something with a distinctive Fujifilm look, but useful for a wide range of subjects that you might encounter on your explorations.

I decided to use the Eterna simulation as a base for Wanderlust, prefering the tones it captures when shifted warm with boosted shadow. The look is retro in tone and warm and welcoming too. I enjoyed creating it, and loved taking photos with it as I took walks around different parts of my home region.

Eterna film simulation recipe to mimic the look of Kodak Aerocolor 125

One of my first recipes based on photo samples from real film was the aged look of expired Kodak Aerocolor. I called it Aerocolor Lomo, and although I love the green tones it produces, it’s something of a specialist recipe.

Revisiting the little known Kodak Aerocolor samples again, I was able to find a handful from non-expired stock that helped me shape this recipe. The most important step with this exercise is choosing the base simulation, and for Aerocolor, I found that Eterna gave the best match.

Other settings include deeper shadows, a small lift to color and a fixed point white balance for a warm, but still natural look. Whilst there is no clarity in use, Chrome Blue is set, so for older cameras, that would need to be skipped.

CineStill Daylight for Softening Bright Light

Eterna film simulation recipe for X-Trans IV cameras

Personally, I love the idea of shooting single shots with the smooth subdued tones I see in sweeping cinematic drama films. There’s just something about the softness and tone that looks great. Thankfully, the X-series cameras have the Eterna Cinema film simulation, which gives us that option.

Similarly, I see some lovely photos online using CineStill film recipes, often used in artifical light at night. I wanted to take the spirit of this, and translate it into a ‘use in daytime’ option, so I can play at snapping cinema stills when the sun was out.

So here’s my CineStill Daylight film recipe, for taking cinematic stills during the day. It’s based on the Eterna Cinema film simulation, with a warmed daylight balance. Even with the warming, there is a cool tone to neutrals with this recipe, and a cinematic feeling to the overall effect.

I took it on a city walk in very bright sunny conditions (awful for photography), but was really happy with the controlled tone to the images.
