Blanko Bleach for Skies, Trees & Seas

Fujifilm film simulation for X-Trans 4 cameras using Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Blanko Bleach Film Recipe

    Blanko Bleach

I’ve been experimenting with Eterna Bleach Bypass, trying to achieve a look that I had in mind. I’ve finally got to a point I am happy with, and I’ve called the recipe Blanko Bleach. It’s wonderfully versatile, but especially in sunny conditions and for a wide range of seascapes and landscapes.

I’ve talked before of my nostalgic fondness for the Hipstamatic app and how certain settings gave satisfying results.

One favourite was the Blanko BL4 ‘film’ that gave a low saturation drama especially to skies. I often paired it with the Ray Mk II ‘lens’, as in this example scene.

For the Fujifilm film recipe, I found it possible to achieve a similar aesthetic using the Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation, and with this recipe a very usable setting that is great in all sorts of environments. The output is pale yet dramatic, with blue tones especially impactful. Honestly, I didn’t expect it to be so generally useful, but I’m very happy that it is.

CN24 for a Crisp Classic Negative Look

Fujiflim film simulation recipe with Classic Negative for X-Trans IV cameras

    CN24 Film Recipe

    CN24

Classic Negative 24 or CN24 is a general use option for shooting on Fujifilm X-series with the Classic Negative film simulation. It uses a white balance adjustment of +2, -4, which gives it the 24 in the name.

I’m a big fan of Classic Negative and the amazing tones it produces. It’s one of the sims that led me to buy my Fujifilm X-S10 and I love shooting with it. With CN24, I wanted to add to the everyday usability of Classic Negative with the addition of a creamy tone, and slightly less blue in the greens.

Squid Ink for Deep Dark Tones

Fujifilm film simulation for X-Trans 4 cameras using Eterna Bleach Bypass

    Squid Ink Film Recipe

    Squid Ink

How’s this for a wonderfully different film recipe? I call it Squid Ink, because of the deep inky blue of the sky, and I just love the effect it produces.

The recipe is based on Eterna Bleach Bypass film receipe, which means it’s for newer cameras only, and to get the best effect, I think it’s best to shoot in bright sunshine, but of course the fun is in finding out what this wild recipe can produce for you.

To get the best from this recipe, underexposure is an important step. See the recipe notes for details.

Summer of ’76 filled with Summer Heat

Film simulation recipe for X-Trans IV with a strong warm colour shift

    Summer of 76 Film Recipe

    Summer of 76

Here in the UK, the Summer of ’76 was one of the hottest and driest on record. I was a young boy then, but I have memories of the shimmering haze over just about everything, and feeling hot day and night. There were water shortages and the surface of the roads began to melt.

Here’s a glowing warm film recipe, wonderfully salmon toned in the late afternoon light. It’s based on Classic Negative, and has a wild 7, -9 colour shift. I was tempted to use -5 clarity, but I found that -2 was enough to give a gentle hazy summer feel.

Gold Standard for an Everyday Kodak Gold

Pro Neg Standard film recipe for a Kodak Gold look on Fujifilm X-Trans IV

    Gold Standard Film Recipe

    Gold Standard

It’s good to have a setting that you can just rely on, and know it’ll give a great result in all sorts of conditions. This recipe is based upon Pro Neg Standard, and is aimed at being a good-to-go film recipe.

The look was modelled on the Kodak Gold aesthetic, with a warmer tone and mid-saturation colours. It shares a number of settings, including the colour balance with the Kodak Gold recipe that uses Classic Chrome. This recipe is richer, with a bit more punch, reflecting the use of Pro Negative Standard.

If your memory of Kodak Gold is something from an earlier decade, you might also enjoy Kojak Gold, a nostalgic take on the Kodak Gold 200 look.

Rosa Negative for Golden Hour Beauty

Classic Negative film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-Trans 4 in Golden Hour

    Rosa Negative Film Recipe

    Rosa Negative

Some of the best light for taking photographs is found during the golden hour around sunrise and sunset. The softness of the light, coupled with the longer shadows and warmer hues, make taking beautiful photos a lot easier.

Photographer Kebs Cayabyab, has developed some recipes on his YouTube channel, including a wonderfully warm Provia recipe called Dela Rosa (2nd recipe in the clip) that he uses in his late afternoon street photography.

I’ve enjoyed his recipe, and in experimenting with it, developed a variant that uses Classic Negative with a couple of stops of overexposure. I call this version Rosa Negative, and like Keb’s original, it’s wonderful in golden hour.

Kodachrome Daily for Everyday 64 Style

Get a Kodachrome 64 look with Fujifilm X-Trans IV cameras

    Kodachrome Daily Film Recipe

    Kodachrome Daily

Classic Chrome is a wonderful film simulation in it’s base configuration, and with a few tweaks it can be shaped to give similar looks to the much loved Kodachrome films from the late twentieth century.

As with some of my other Kodakchrome recipes, this one is a result of iteration and experiments with the Fuji X Weekly recipes, that are rightly so popular with Fujifilm photographers.

This film recipe retains the slightly turquoise blues of Kodachrome with Classic Chrome, but is a little softer than other recipes, making it useful as a daily driver. It also uses an auto white balance, meaning it can adapt to different conditions more readily, and be tried indoors.

It’s a daily Kodachrome 64 look, with all that’s great about Classic Chrome in a single recipe.

  • Oceanic 815 for Deep Ocean Blues

Oceanic 815 for Deep Ocean Blues

A lot of my film recipes feature soft tones or faded tones for a nostalgic look. Sometimes however, it’s good to have some deeper tones to help style the image in a more impactful way.

    Oceanic 815

I developed this recipe for a specific purpose. To shoot images of the ocean from up on the cliffs above. It’s aim is to enhance the blues of the sea and add some stylish contrast to a scene. It should be great for beach holidays and coastal walks. Just don’t get LOST.

Film recipe for X-Trans IV using Eterna for a mellow soft look

    Eterna Nostalgia Film Recipe

    Eterna Nostalgia

One of the tags I follow on Insta is #oldtonecollective where you can find many inspiring images in a retro influenced style. I was scrolling through some when I got the idea to adapt one of Eteernuh‘s recipes into something nostalgic.

The Eterna Nostalgia film recipe is based on the Eterna Cinema film simulation for Fujifilm X-series cameras, and is toned with a strong +5, -5 shift to give a warm and fuzzy tone. It’s a fun recipe to shoot with, giving a mellow retro look. It’s lovely at the beach, in hazy or misty conditions, and anywhere with old things to photograph.

Creamy Kodak Portra film simulation recipe for Fujifilm X-trans IV cameras

    Kodak Portra 66 Film Recipe

    Kodak Portra 66

Some things seem to be made to go together, and in our world of film simulations and recipes, it’s Kodak Portra and fading Americana. Think of an abandoned gas station on a dusty desert highway. Creamy tones and washed out colours give a nostalgic feel. It’s the retro look of a trip along Route 66.

I haven’t been to the American West in about a decade, so I developed this recipe closer to home. I took it out and about on a city walk in Winchester and on some walks in the New Forest.
