Vintage Astia, a Nostalgic Negative Mood

Astia film simulation recipe with a warm grainy retro look for X-Trans IV

So here’s a recipe that doesn’t replicate any film in particular, but has many of the qualities of a film. This is down to the use of Astia film simulation as the base to the recipe. It has a solid film-like feel, especially in the tone of the highlights, and is also a nice break from Classic Chrome and Classic Negative, which are quite distinctive in their styling.

The vintage part is an added mood, bringing warmth, grain and a gentle reduction in saturation. The result is a warm look, with the retro feel of images as they once were, but without being too much like any Kodachrome or Fujicolor style. I’ve become quite partial to it, using it as a general use recipe in all sorts of conditions.

This recipe also has a passing resemblence to Nostalgic Negative from the newest cameras, so if you want a recipe to fake it, this may be the one.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe with rich colour in golden hour

Here’s a warm and cosy film simulation recipe to bring extra colour to golden hour. Sunrises and sunsets are made more orange, and golden hour is extended with warm rich tone that especially likes any cream, red or brown in an image.

As for the name, ‘Dawnstar’ is a location in the game Skyrim, and although the Jorrvaskr film recipe was directly inspired by the graphic style of the game, this one takes just the name.

I wanted to take the idea of a recipe for this time of day, and maximise the effects possible from our Fujifilm X-Series cameras. The base simulation is Classic Negative, so on older cameras you can try with Provia or use Velvia with colour at +1 rather than +4.

Classic Negative film simulation recipe for a mellow and uniquely Fujifilm look

I’ve been exploring mellow moods with film recipes recently, and wanted another recipe to compliment Mellow Magic and Vintage Mood, which both use Eterna. I think this image character is both unique to Fujifilm and also a beautiful tone in its own right.

For this relaxed recipe, I used Classic Negative, which has a built in nostalgic look. But, I also find it can be a bit too bold ‘as-is’ and benefits from a small amount of reining in. In this case, I trimmed highlights and reduced the saturation, and paired it with a warm colour balance based on 5000K temperature.

I kept the moody shadow tone at standard levels, which retains an impactful look. This also means that the recipe loves to work with sunlight, and is particularly pleasant when shooting towards the light. So, like it says in the Age of Aquarius song … Let the sunshine in ☀️

I used to travel to the Western USA for work, and thinking back, there were so many amazing landscapes and scenes I would have enjoyed photographing with my Fujifilm camera. So, although I’m not there in person nowadays, I’ve made this recipe with the Old West in mind.

The recipe is based on Eterna for a cinematic feel, and uses a nostalgic warm colour shift to evoke the dusty Western feel. Heavy grain is in use too for another layer of ageing, giving a soft toned grainy image, a bit like older images from the American West.

Everything’s a little clearer in the light of day, an afternoon film recipe

I was rewatching Anchorman for the umpteenth time, and I was reminded that I’d not yet written up my recipe page for Afternoon Delight. I’d made this Classic Negative recipe back in the early summer, looking for a great partner in the long afternoons and evenings.

I have several warm Classic Negative film recipes already, and for this one, I wanted a natural balance for maximum flexibility. Something unique, but not as warm as Goldeneye or as rich as Grizzly Bear.

It’s a very usable recipe, working well in sunny or cloudy conditions, and in the golden hour. So, despite it’s summer origins, it’s an all-year recipe.

It’s also the fourth in my occasional series of recipes named like song titles, joining Ruby Tuesday, Parklife and Karmachroma.

Fujifilm Velvia film simulation recipe for rich golden images from many cameras

Some of my most popular film recipes are those created with Classic Negative and featuring a warm rich tone. When I share images made with these, and especially Goldeneye, and the recent Dreamland, I often get qustions about how to recreate the look with older sensors.

This presents a challenge to me, as I only own one camera, and the quality of the native film simulations are hard to fake. Certainly, the Fujifilm colour science and processing algorithms are way more sophisticated than the adjustments that I make in a film recipe, but that’s not a reason to be defeated.

I have created this film recipe as a mimic to Goldeneye and Dreamland, using the Velvia film simulation (the first recipe I have tried with this), and I have kept to settings that are common on the widest range of Fujifilm cameras. It shares a lot of the qualities of these film recipes, without the dependence on Classic Negative.

Warm and hazy film recipe for a dream like look with strong colour

Here’s a film recipe with a feel good factor. The Dreamland film recipe brings a rich and warm tone to your images with a hazy softness like a remembered dream. It’s one of my more extreme film recipes with a high saturation and bold look.

At the heart of the look is Classic Negative, which is set at 5,500k with a 5, -5 additional shift into toasty warm territory. The softness comes from negative clarity, which you can also achieve with a cinebloom or mist filter.

This recipe prefers bright light or golden hour, giving somewhat treacle tones in dull conditions. However, if you like that, then consider it a bonus!

Kodachrome film recipe with a nostalgic 1960s Classic Chrome look

Far out! This is one hip film recipe for groovy 1960’s toned images. The output is wonderfully retro with a real vintage feel, but is still completely usable all day in a wide range of situations. It’s part of my growing collection of Kodak themed recipes, and sits somewhere between my original Kodachrome recipe, and the softer Kodak Portra Daily.

The magic of this recipe lies in the tremendous tones of Classic Chrome which are enhanced here with warm colour balance and tone adjustments to give a bright look with soft shadows.

In many ways, this is Classic Chrome dialed up, giving a classic Kodachrome feel with a vintage edge. It’s great in a variety of situations, and throughout the seasons.

Warm shifted film recipe for nostalgic retro images with Classic Chrome

The word whakamuri is a Maori word that translates loosely as ‘looking back’ or ‘counting backwards’, so I’ve adopted it as the name of this retro toned recipe for styling images with a golden aged tone.

The base film simulation is Classic Chrome which is pushed far far into the warm tones zone with a +6, -8 colour balance shift. This gives a strong yellow creamy styling to most images and is the heart of the look.

In keeping with the nostalgic retro theme, shadows are softened and colour is muted. There’s a dose of grain in here too, along with negative clarity adding to the slightly hazy analog feel.

I put my trousers on, have a cup of tea, and I think about leaving the house. Here’s the third in the occasional series of film recipes with names based on song titles. First we had Karmachroma, then Ruby Tuesday, and now we have Parklife. This recipe has boosted colour and a haze from clarity to give a warm cosy look for sunny days in the park and elsewhere.

The recipe is great in the sun, and even better around golden hour. It’ll no doubt be a good partner in what’s left of the Autumn season, with Classic Negative loving reds and oranges in the fall color. And, for our friends in tropical lands or the Southern Hemisphere, a great recipe for you too.
