Instagram inspired film simulation recipe using Eterna for warm muted images

Do you follow inspiring photographers on social media, and want to achieve a similar look in your Fujifilm photography? I’m often inspired, and will try and make a recipe to get a similar look.

One such photographer is Gareth Llewellyn, known as withgar on both Instagram and Threads, and in his images there’s a characterful warm and muted look.

I love this, and so I’ve made this muted tone film recipe based on this inspiration.

My recipe is close to some of his images, but of course it isn’t an exact match.

So, being similar but different, leads to this recipe name, similar but different to his handle.

Wigan Pier is a versatile and forgiving look that softens extreme light and works especially well in soft light, such as in the golden hour.

I’ve been testing it a lot over recent months and I’ve come to find it a favourite new look, bringing cosy and cinematic tones to my photos, and making me feel at least a little way towards achieving a social meadia winning look of my own!

Eterna Bleach Bypass film simulation recipe for fall color and golden sunsets

Here in the UK, the late autumn has finally delivered and we are blessed with mist, mushrooms and golden leaves. A lot of the trees are at peak colour right now, with beeches, sweet chestnuts and oaks all putting on a show.

Of course, it’s the UK, so it’s raining a lot too, but this past weekend saw a sunny break and so I took a lovely wander in the morning light. In the space of an hour, I took around 150 images, such was the abundance of golden subjects.

This gave me a chance to test out this recipe, Gold Leaf, which I had been saving for a morning just like this. It uses a strong warm shift colour tone and a +4 colour boost to bring back some saturation into the images.

It’s a recipe designed just for days like this, but by virtue of the strongly gold tone, it is also a great choice for a rich golden sky around sunrise and sunset too.

Brown and bronze toned fillm simulation recipe using Eterna Bleach Bypass

Here’s a Fujifilm film simuation recipe that’s full of creamy coffee toned bronze character. It uses Eterna Bleach Bypass for an impactful look, with a strong bronze tone colour shift. It has a big impact on the look of your photos, and so it needed a big name, like Brontosaurus.

By using Eterna Bleach Bypass, this recipe rules out older cameras, so if you don’t have this simulation on yours, take a look at Coffee Chrome for a similar look based on Classic Chrome.

For those of us, with Bleach Bypass, we can enjoy the deep contrast that it offers, along with the muted colour palette that allows for the single tone of the colour balance shift to add distinctive character.

The result is something quite unique, and of course, this won’t be a general use film recipe to use in all conditions. It feels a little like a colorised sepia recipe for old tone images, and I have great fun using it to capture a new look to familiar scenes. Give it a try, and I am sure you will have fun too.

Eterna Cinema film simulation recipe for capturing autumn fall colours and golden hour

When thinking about photographing Autumn colour / Fall color there are two likely directions you may be drawn too. The first is to look to emphasise the rich orange and reds, especially in sunshine, by using a warm tone and strong saturation. The other, is to work with the softer light and bring out a mellow atmosphere. This film recipe takes the warm color tone approach, using enhanced colour, but retains the generally cinematic balance of Eterna to prevent images from becoming overly false looking.

In this cinematic take on the autumn season I’ve taken the Eterna Cinema film simulation, one that already has a mellowness to it’s green and brown tones, and tuned it further for autumnal scenes.

Film simlulation recipe using classic negative for cream, green and orange tones.

In my work on film simulation recipes, I sometimes find that food names seem to fit the looks that I create. An example is Soft Cinnamon, which has a cinnamon colour tone. I’m drawn again to a food reference for this new film recipe, because again there’s a colour pallete tone that reminds me of food.

I’m sure you are familiar with Apple Strudel, with its apple and cinnamon filling, and peachy golden pastry crust. There’s a mix of soft green and orange tones in this fabulous treat, which are both evident in the images taken with this film recipe.

Because of its fondness for orange tones, it’s a great choice around the fall for autumn colours, or in general when there’s a golden tone, such as around sunset in the golden hour. At other times, images are warmed, and neutral stake on a creamy look, like a splach of vanilla sauce, just like you get served with a strudel.

Classic Chrome film recipe based on Kodak Colorplus 200 film

I like to follow some 35mm photography groups on social media, gaining inspiration from the images and styles of the various film stocks. In one post, I read about someone who discovered a roll of Kodak Colorplus 200 in a bargain bin of a store, and even though it was past expiry, bought it and tried it out.

I enjoyed the story and the images (which of course, I have since lost the link to), but I did use them as inspiration for this film recipe. The exposed images were bright and colourful, with a nostalgic Kodak style … just right to model with Classic Chrome.

So, here we have Rescued Colorplus, for a bright, film like look, based on an out-of-date roll of Kodak film. The settings are simple, so that even though it was developed on X-Trans IV, you could adapt it to other cameras with ease.

Soft tones Fujicolor Superia look made with Classic Negative on X-Trans IV

My very first film recipe creation was a Classic Negative film simulation recipe called Soft Negative, which has remained a favourite of mine ever since. It has a softness and warmth that suits my photography style, and the retro elements of the Classic Negative simulation.

In all the film recipes that I’ve produced since, I’ve not quite eclipsed this early one as a favourite. There have been some close seconds, like Kojak Gold, my 200th recipe, and Childhood Vacation with a washed out look that’s great fun to use.

However, I think at last, I might have a new favourite film recipe. It’s made with Classic Negative again and packed full of the character and style that I love. May I present to you, Superia Loco, a low contrast Fujiilm Superia look. It’s my new no. 1 and I really hope that you enjoy it too.

Warm and hazy film simulation recipe with Eterna and negative clarity

I originally developed this recipe in the early Summer, when warm weather made the air feel heavy with humidity and a hazy look seems to magnify the mood. I’m not entirely sure why I never published the recipe back then, but I have since rediscovered it and given it a new test in other condistions.

The recipe takes the mellow tones of Eterna film simulation with a strongly nostalgic colourshift. To this I have added further softness with a misty fuzz from -4 clarity. This acts like a mist filter, so if you wish, you can use one of those instead, but this recipe is intended to be seen with the softness of negative clarity.

This recipe certainly is a mood magnifier, and is especially useful when the sun is low and ther weather warm. For dreamy Summer afternoons it is perfect, and it is especially effective in the golden hour. I also suggest one or two stops of over-exposure which will bring some highlight burn into the overall look.

Eteran film simulation recipe for capturing summer scenes with character

In the strong light of summer, a relaxed film recipe that can tame the harsh light is a useful partner. In these conditions, I like to capture the warm and leisurely mood of the summer months, but I also want to be able to shoot throughout the day, rather than necessarily have to wait until the golden hour.

This film recipe, designed for August and the summer, uses that most tolerant of film simulations, Eterna Cinema. This does the hard work of taming the contrast, and to this base, I’ve added a characterful warmth, from a 1, -6 shift from the auto colour balance. To magnify this, colour is uplifted to the maximum, which for Eterna, is still soft and not distracting.

So here it the result, a welcoming and characterful summer film recipe, that makes an excellent travel companion and top choice for lazy warm afternoons and evenings.
