A go anywhere film simulation recipe using Pro Neg Hi for X-trans IV and V

We’re approaching another milestone in the life of the Film Recipes website, with the next recipe to be launched being, almost unbelievably, recipe number 200. For the moment though, we have ‘the one before’, which I have named one-nine-nine.

This recipe is an easy to use Pro Neg Hi setting that loves being used outdoors and throughout the year. It’s versatile, with a gently mellow look that is comforting in tone without being too heavily nostalgic.

Personally, I am a big fan of the base Pro Neg film simulations, and although they were designed with skin tones in mind, I’ve always enjoyed their look in natural environments. They are versatile, and whilst they are classically Fujifillm in their look, they’re less stylised than the chrome and negative simulations in their appearance.

This all adds up to a highly usable film recipe which is characterful without being overpowering, and is suited to general use through all seasons and weathers.

Eterna film simulation recipe with warm soft tones for outdoor shooting

At the beginning of 2023, I released a mellow Classic negative recipe called Age of Aquarius, which was a great choice on sunny days for a softer look. For this related recipe, I’ve blended the settings from Age of Aquarius with the Eterna Cinema film simulation to bring a new soft look cinematic recipe into existence.

The result is a warm recipe with a very forgving tone curve that makes it a great choice in soft or hard light situations. The warm soft tone is also excellent for a cinematic look in the golden hour around sunrise and sunset. With an Eterna base, it works well with blues, giving lovely soft skies, and with greens, there’s a mellow tone to grasses and leaves. I’m sure it’ll be a great choice for Spring and Summer.

I have used a couple of beer related film recipe names on this site, such as Wychwood Pale, and Pale Ale, and for this vibrant spring recipe, I’ve chosen a name used in European beer circles for the Spring special brews. Lente Bok beers are fresh and hoppy, marking the change from winter to summer styles.

In my film recipe Lente Bok, the spirit is much the same. This is a punch Velvia film simulation recipe with bold colour and plenty of impact. If you prefer colourful photography, this is a good all round choice to try.

Pro Neg film simulation recipe for green scenes and nature walks

I love walking in nature with my camera, and have now made several green friendly recipes and film recipes to use in woodlands and forests.

A number of the built-in film simulations work well with green tones, with Eterna giving a mellow look, Classic Negative a striking cool tone and Astia a bright fresh tone. For something in the middle, with a soft and natural green, the Pro Neg simulations are the place to go.

For this green themed recipe, Pro Neg Standard is the base sim, with adjustments to colour balance for warmth and to shadow for pleasant contrast. In addition, to bring out the details, clarity is set to +2.

This combination works well in sunny woodlands and with greens in more shady or cloudy conditions. It’s a great choice for any nature photo walk, either in your local forest, or when out looking for Ewoks on the Forest Moon of Endor.

Here’s a bright and soft film recipe that brings a citrus freshness to summer scenes. It’s been created by one of our talented challenge photographers, Darren Urda. You can see his wonderful images of Australia in many of our user gallery collections.

For this look, Darren has pushed Astia into new creative territory with two stops of overexposure and a warm colour balance that really brings out the yellow and green, from the land of yellow and green.

I was keen to try it too, so at the bottom of the page after Darren’s excellent images, you’ll find a few that I’ve made with this exciting summer look.

I set myself a little project to develop a small set of film simulation recipes which present a pure look using the standard film simulations in our cameras. For a Kodak look, I have Kodacolor Ambience. For a Fujifilm look, there is Fujicolor Ambience, and for a natural color style, here is Natural Ambience.

The base for this recipe is the Astia film simulation, which has a film like look and works well with skin tones and earthy or creamy tones. The settings of the recipe make minor adjustments, alowing the pure Astia look show through.

These images are actually more saturated than my usual taste, and I’d often opt for somethiing more muted or nostalgic. But on bright days, and for natural scenes, this recipe is a great way to capture memories in a natural style.

Film simulation recipe using Pro Neg Standard for forest and woodland vibes

I love walking in forests and woodlands and take a lot of my photos in amongst the trees. I wanted to make a recipe that brought out the greens of the forest in a mellow and nostalgic look. I also wanted to recognise that it’s not always sunny, and when it’s a bit wet or gloomy, the forest is a great place to walk.

The base for this recipe is Pro Neg Standard, a simulation that Fujifilm suggest we use for portrait photography. That may well be a good use, but I have been drawn to the limestone grey green tone of neutrals and wanted to build on this for a forest look.

The resulting tone is soft and muted with a retro nostalgic feel, and there is a green character that runs throughout. It loves the woods in all seasons and all weathers, working well with pale creams, browns and oranges as well as its main feature, green tones.

I have a page of suggestions for film recipes for forests and woodlands, but this is the first that I have made specifically with this in mind.

Eterna cinematic film simulation recipe for a mellow nostalgic look to nature photos

This is a film simulation recipe that brings together several of my favourite elements into one place. There’s a cinematic feel, a mellow tone and a nostalgic look all rolled up into one.

The secret is of course the Fujifilm film simulation, which for this recipe is the Eterna/Cinema simulation. Eterna, with its movie origins, has a cinematic feel and a built in mellowness that adds emphasis to greens and browns. These mellow tones are maximised with the addition of the Color Chrome effect and a warm colour balance at 5800K color temperature.

The end result is a fabulous choice in woodlands and forests, or when you are shooting natural landscapes in the great outdoors. It’s a recipe for the explorer in us … something to take with us on adventures.

If you enjoy soft tones in your colour photography and want to continue your style into mono, then Soft Acros is for you. With a forgiving tone curve and gentle grain, this is a soft and sophisticated mono recipe for a calm style of monochrome photography.

In this recipe, shadows are lifted to keep the overall quality of the image soft, and to preserve shadow details. You’ll also notice the hint of a tone to the images, with the WC setting used to give a subtle newsprint look.

As a landscape photographer with a passion for softer tones and atmospheric looks, I am a firm fan of the Eterna/Cinema film simulation. For this film recipe, I wanted to take everything that I enjoyed about Eterna and max it out.

This Eterna recipe is a celebration of the warm soft look and cinematic feel of Eterna, that lovels going on photowalks, especially in woodlands and forests, and when light is warmer at the beginning and end of the day.
