Capturing premium colour tones with Fujifilm Reala Ace Simulation

    Real Leica Film Recipe

    Real Leica

Leica cameras are a top tier product offering excellent image quality, fantastic build and design, and a reputation that is trusted by professionals the world over. Images are controlled, clean and natural, without the standout character of Fujifilm simulations. But there is a certain something to them, often found in gently pink red tones that make photos recognisably Leica.

So, for this film recipe, I wanted to capture as many of these qualities as I could, not necessarily hoping to fool observers, but to bring as much Leica character to Fuji SOOC photos as possible.

Using Reala Ace as the base simulation feels right to me, bringing the smoothness of tone and controlled, clean results. Grain is kept off and the Color Chrome effects are put to work to retain definition in coloured subjects. This allows a boost to saturation without making photos look too artificial.

This film simulation recipe for Leica colours has been available in the Film Recipes app for a little while, and I’d certainly recommend you grab a copy to get access to more recipes, including a Pro NEG Hi. Leica look and around 800 other recipe styles.

There are many ways to interpret a style, and this is my best take on a real Leica look. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Underwood, Deep Forest Mood Film Recipe

Creative deep tones film recipe for exploring the details found in nature

    Underwood Film Recipe

    Underwood

Here’s a fresh new look at the Reala Ace film simulation, found on the newer Fujifilm X Series cameras. I have it on my X-S20 via a software update, but models like the X100VI, X-M5, X-E5 and X-T50 will have it available too.

In this recipe, I’ve explored a deeper look that keep the low contrast character of Reala Ace, but uses underexposure to dramatically change the look of the resulting photos. Blacks become a dominant feature, but with the impressive tone control of our cameras, we actually see a lot of mood and detail in the deep tones.

The colour balance here is fairly neutral, working well with forest and woodland finds, and a reduced saturation adds to the character of the resulting photos. In dull weather, the result can almost look moonlit, and I’ve come to prefer using this recipe when the weather is damp or grey.

It’s a fun recipe to experiement with, presenting your familiar favourites in a very different way. I love it for woodland walks, but I am excited to see what you make of it too. Have fun!

Oxygen, Fresh Air Spring Film Recipe

A bright and cheerful Reala ace film simulationrecipe, ideal for X100VI in the Spring season

    Oxygen Film Recipe

    Oxygen

For those of us living in the Northern hemisphere, Spring is bursting out all over and teh greens of nature are filling the landscape. In my Film Recipes App, I notice that the film recipes being set as favourites are bright and colourful, ready for capturing this Spring season. Recipes like; Arboria, QE2 and Endor, as welll as several exclusive to app users.

This inspired me to get creative and develop a brand new recipe for Spring 2025, which I am sharing with you here. It is based on Reala Ace, a simulation available in newer cameras, like hte X100VI, X-M5 and X-T5. It has wonderful colour as standard, and makes a great base for a fresh air look like this.

As always, the colour balance has been tweaked, and I also made small adjustments to the tone curve. The biggest change is a nice big blast of extra colour, with a +3 saturation setting. I hope you’ll enjoy this new recipe and will find it fun to use in the Spring and Summer seasons.

  • Mountaineer, Natural Colour for Travel

    Mountaineer, Natural Colour for Travel

Reala Ace film simulation recipe for trips and travel with X100VI, XT-5 and X-S20

    Mountaineer Film Recipe

    Mountaineer

When travel takes you to new places, it’s exciting to take photos of different scenes and in new environments. Sometimes, you can’t predict quite what you’ll find so you need a versatile film recipe with natural colour and an easy to use setting so you can capture whatever you come across with confidence.

I’ve given this recipe a try out in high mountains (where it was originally developed and gained its name), at a sporting event in very harsh light, and around the countryside and coast near where I live.

This film recipe uses the Reala Ace film simulation that is present on the newset cameras in the Fujifilm X-Series line up. This look is now the most naturally neutral of all the simulations, presenting colours with little variation from what our eyes percieve. It still has a film like feel, but is a less obviously Fujifilm look that other simulations.

I enjoy working with Reala Ace as a recipe base, especially for natural scenes and images including blue skies. Although I take few photos of people. it’s also a reliable choice for capturing faces and natural looking skin tones, which again gives it points for versatility and safety in varied situations.

  • Olympic Ace, All Round Reala Recipe

Olympic Ace, All Round Reala Recipe

The Summer Olympics are upon us, and a trip to watch the tennis event has got me inspired to prepare film recipes for capturing scenes at the event. I’ve got a number of these in the works, including the first to be added to this site, Paris 24, based on Classic Negative.

    Olympic Ace Film Recipe

    Olympic Ace

For this look, I wanted to do two things; make a great looking film recipe with the Reala Ace film simulation, and also create one that I could use just about everywhere under whatever weather and lighting situation that might arise. Reala Ace is a good choice for this because, like Provia, is has a good all round performance without a strong style of its own.

The adjustments from standard Reala Ace include a softening of the tone curve to be kinder to shadow detail and strong highlights, a DR400 setting to futher enhance this tonal flexibility, and a reduction in saturation to give a more natural overall feel. The white balance is warmed, but still retains a natural colour look.

I’ve added plenty of samples below to show the versatility of this recipe, including sunny and grey days. I will add further images from my trip to the Olympic Games in the coming weeks.
